View Full Version : Prop. 8

Yes, I know we don't live in California, but hey why not.

Fiction: Prop 8 doesn’t discriminate against gay people.

* Fact: Prop 8 is simple: it eliminates the rights for same-sex couples to marry. Prop 8 would deny equal protections and write discrimination against one group of people—lesbian and gay people—into our state constitution.

Fiction: Teaching children about same-sex marriage will happen here unless we pass Prop 8.

* Fact: Not one word in Prop 8 mentions education. And no child can be forced, against the will of their parents, to be taught anything about health and family issues at school. California law prohibits it.

California’s top educators including Superintendent of Schools Jack O’Connell and California Teachers all agree: Prop 8 has nothing to do with education.

Fiction: Churches could lose their tax-exemption status.

* Fact: The court decision regarding marriage specifically says “no religion will be required to change its religious policies or practices with regard to same-sex couples, and no religious officiant will be required to solemnize a marriage in contravention of his or her religious beliefs.”

Fiction: A Massachusetts case about a parent’s objection to the school curriculum will happen here.

* Fact: California gives parents an absolute right to remove their kids and opt-out of teaching on health and family instruction they don’t agree with. The opponents know that California law already covers this and Prop 8 won’t affect it, so they bring up an irrelevant case in Massachusetts.

Fiction: Four Activist Judges in San Francisco…

* Fact: Prop 8 is about eliminating a fundamental right. Judges didn’t grant the right, the constitution guarantees the right. Proponents of Prop 8 use an outdated and stale argument that judges aren’t supposed to protect rights and freedoms. Prop 8 is about whether Californians are willing to amend the constitution for the sole purpose of eliminating a fundamental right for one group of citizens.

Fiction: If Prop 8 isn’t passed, people can be sued over personal beliefs.

* Fact: California’s laws already prohibit discrimination against anyone based on race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. This has nothing to do with marriage.

Fiction: Pepperdine University supports the Yes on 8 campaign.

* Fact: The University has publicly disassociated itself from Professor Richard Peterson of Pepperdine University, who is featured in the ad, and has asked to not be identified in the Yes on 8 advertisements.

Fiction: Unless Prop 8 passes, California parents won’t have the right to object to what their children are taught in school.

* Fact: California law clearly gives parents and guardians broad authority to remove their children from any health instruction if it conflicts with their religious beliefs or moral convictions.

But just in case you're unsure, I want you to know the real deal.

Watch this quick 30 second video to find out why voting NO on Prop. 8 is so important. http://www.noonprop8.com/messages

What a terrible thing.

Yes, I know we don't live in California, but I suppose since there's so much Right wing in here I might as well freshen it up for the logical, diplomatic, compassionate American's, that try to make up for what the idiots do to our reputation.

Funny... I'm republican and i dont support prop. 8

crazy but when you open an argument / persuasion writing piece, its usually better not to insult your audience in the opening paragraph. USUALLY helps you make the connection to the audience to express how "although from a opposing political party, middle ground can be found".

But you lost me at this paragraph... Didnt read another word because of it. again... just for clarity. I AM REPUBLICAN and I SUPPORT GAY RIGHTS. damn amazing...

So far, i find your rhetorical abilities sub-par for any of the arguments you've recently made.

I'd have to say for the win. I agree with Jay. I'm a Republican and I support gay rights.

Another Repub in favor of gay rights.

But glad to see another democrat who thinks they can judge a person simply by their party affiliation. You've got a lot to learn, Layne.

Lol, who said I was a democrat?
and I edited to cut out the douchebagery again, don't know what was wrong with me today. In fact you can delete the whole thread you want, and for the record, I don't think /ALL/ republicans are <insert such and such flamery> I was stating whatever I said directed at the people who can't wrap their minds around civil rights, but yeah, I give up on trying to look not like a douche-bag at this point. Apologies all around for everybody <3

i would like to point out that i still dont understand why this is such a huge issue with Republicans in general.

I mean besides the fact that they still believe in a magical guy living in the sky who watches everything you do. But that seems to ever be the ONLY argument against it. I mean just think alone of the taxes that can be generated, that alone should be a convincing argument for either party. But again religion comes into play... i thought the government didnt have a religion?

and if government doesn't have a religion, then how can they use it as an arguing factor.

I think abortion rights and gay marriage should be a state issue rather than federal. As for why most republicans are against gay marriage you should be able to figure that one out pretty easily. Its all about voter bases...republicans try to get the christian vote with pro-life and no gay marriage support, democrats try to get the otherside, same thing with alot of big issues, republicans go for the 2nd amendment rights for the NRA vote, democrats go for the social justice votes etc. Thats the main reason a 2 party system sucks ass, but it won't be changing anytime soon.

two party system is the best for this mass of fuking retards who live in this country.

They have an attention span of about 4 seconds, dont know ANYTHING that goes on around them politically and then get real loud and vocal when something changes that affects their daily lives... Instead of staying PROACTIVE.

Which is why now that everyone is "happy" Obama is president, everyone will ignore what is going on until it affects their daily lives. The government control socialist machine will have free reign as it's always had, regardless of who is driving it.

You can't win a war on drugs...or terror for that matter...That's the genius part about it, a free pass to throw as much money at it as the powers that be want, with no end in sight.
