Wont be running it down the track till i get a new TH350 or TH400 transmission( beefy 3 speed transmissions). The 700R4 (weak 4 speed) is already slipping after getting on it full throttle 10-15 times. Looking into a loan here real soon to get one built to throw in. But I'm guessing quarter mile times would be 12-13 out of it. It pulls pretty hard and puts ya in your seat :)

be happy its a 700r4 instead of later fbodies with their 4l60e. 5th gens look to have that problem taken care of for those weird auto people

Caleb there is a guy in Watkins that works on transmissions, Jim's Transmissions. He is a very nice guy and does a hell of a job. He is reasonable on his prices and has been doing it for years. He built mine in my Malibu and said he could build just about whatever you want. If you want to keep that overdrive I know he did one for a guy that I used to work with who was running about 500hp and it was holding up fine.

i think Apples might still have the built up TH350 out of his Monte he only wanted like $150 for, i'll ask him this weekend. youd still need a torque converter though- id suggest somewhere in the 3000-3500rpm range.

the problem with 700R4's is the gearing; it has such a low 1st gear (3.2 something if i remember right), and 2nd gear is such a jump, that the tranny cant handle the stress when you start making power. they can be built up, but if i remember right, its a bit more expensive than a TH350 or TH400.

Im thinking about having mine done @ Fountains Transmission where Jakes got his done at. But if that TH350 is still laying around, i might be interested in it, I would just need to know if its built to handle about 425 flywheel horsepower and or if it has the longer tailshaft so it can bolt right in.

it shouldnt take much to get a TH350 to handle that. my 727 blew 3 times before i finally took it to Fountains. i dont think they did anything too crazy with it, and it held my motor spraying 125hp in first gear even. per the numbers we calculated my car made around 425hp at the crank as well.

by the way; i called Apples, and his TH350 is now in an 18 y.o. girl's El Camino. sorry.

if you're gonna get a loan, i'd spend the extra coin on the 400; it'll probably hold just about anything you're ever gonna throw at it...or a T56 swap!

Yeah I was thinking about a TH400, but then i have to look at stall converters and getting driveshaft modified and all that crap but who knows.

Just wanted to say 'nice car' and I thought I ran into you on first ave a week or two ago, your car sounded really nice. I was in that yellow Mustang (obviously- see signature lol) I had fun 'jumping' and playing around on the ave- I never intended on lining up and actually going for it but yeah it was cool seeing an IAF member out.

Yeah I remember your car, that one little time i tried giving it gas it hesitated pretty bad, but its tuned now and doesn't really do that anymore. But yeah, the 3" exhaust does make it sound nice :) . I'm just gonna try to get all the bugs worked out. But yeah, I just wanted to cruise w/ my little brother, no racing intended, too many cops out on first ave anyway. Maybe next spring, I'll be able to bring it out and get on it without worrying about something breaking haha.

Ahh its a short shaft. A longer shaft unit would bolt right in.

The tail shaft is not hard to replace.

Well, going for 1 of 2 options here. TH350 thats sitting in my dads garage, Its got a Shift Kit already in it, needs a longer tailshaft and rebuilt to stand the power. Or I can get a loan to get a TH400 from fountains with a reverse manual valve body and a tranny brake, that can withstand anything i throw at it. But then I have to get a ____ kit and a new shifter to utilize it properly. Hmmmm...what to do.

What I have seen through the yrs a th350 should do fine w/o nitrous. You go nitrous I'd think about a th400. I'm sure w lots of $ a th350 can be good too. But w just basic upgrades a th400 will take the plate spray. Bigger clutches, bigger parts in general. More weight/drag though, a minus. A t56 costs lots of dollars. You plan to 1/4 mi the car a auto is better. Mpg a t56 is way superior to a 3 speed auto w a stall. So figure out what you want to do.

Getting a TH350 redone with a Harden Shell, shift kit, kick down, and overall just built to withstand some power for a little over $1000. B&M Ratchet Shifter and 3000 stall to go with it.

Well the B&M shifter and stall was a separate $646 thru summit, not from fountain lol.

Well I own 2 Firebirds now, my 1985, and a 1980 Formula, it isnt running but there may be some swapping over the summer or fall after I run my current car at the track first.
