Back in 68.5 ford brought out some specially stripped 428cj mustangs to compete in stock and super stock. It destroyed the competition at winternationals fairly well. It was rated 335hp and was refactored by nhra. Worth a lot of $ these days.

Now ford has announced a similar program.
Ford will be resurrecting the Mustang Cobra Jet nameplate for a return this summer as a modern day factory drag racer. The new Cobra Jet will be powered by the Romeo 605 5.4L V8 crate motor from Ford Racing which is similar to the GT500 engine. The Romeo 605 is built at FoMoCo Romeo engine plant niche assembly line with the upgraded TVS supercharger producing 605 horsepower & 550 lb-ft of torque. The Romeo 605 is the most powerful modular engine ever built on a Ford production line. The new Cobra Jet will come factory detuned to just 400 horsepower to meet NHRA rules. Ford plans to build only 50 of these factory drag racer’s for a handful of dealers. The new Cobra Jet is expected to be priced at $69,900 with dealer markups through the roof.
Btw it is not street legal, the vin is not there, just has a serial number.

sounds pretty similar to what Chrysler is doing with the new Challenger factory drag cars. i dont think they were to cost so much though- and they were going to be offered with a few different engines and setups depending on what class you wanted to race in.

Well I looked up the engine in frp catalog, lists for 18.15k. Holy sh-t. That's the 605 hp version. Trying to remember what my 4.6 went for, I think crated +8k. If barret jackson is around though someday maybe be worth 300k for a cobra jet. Who knows. I've got the hood for a 5.4 4v maybe I ought to take out a gm credit loan.

Yea it looks pretty uncontrolled on the in car video. I think looking at these test videos it puts down more than they claim. But its light. I'm sure doesn't have a shaker sound system and whatever else. I wonder about a 605 hp version. That's what a low power super snake claims w the tvs s/c.

Another recent race at track. Bob tasca jr vs john force. Now remember these are rated around 400hp. for a special stock class. They can't run a lil pulley. I'd like to see one w say 17# boost. Still 93 pump gas range.

Its the same engine as a romeo 605 hp just pulley sizes. If the maf transfer curves were dialed in right then just swap a pulley. Or it had that new abaco maf which suppose to work with any car w a maf. check out test results.

I hope the class fits in the drag pack challenger, and any future production race camaro. It would seem kinda weak without competition. If not, I'm sure NMCA or someone will figure something out. Seem to be a little bit more with the times anymore. I'm sure eventually they will cross paths in competition.

Another finished cobra jet at fontana, notice he doesn't know anything about drag strip, he waits till someone tells him to break 2nd beam, then horrible shifting, goes 11 @ 135 mph, 2nd run lil better 10.7 at 128 hits the rev limiter in 3rd gear to kill top speed. No I'm not driving...lol.. That maverick guy goes wtf gets confused. He does beat the old mopar replicar.

Found out a lil more ok... the auto's are c4's, chance converter w footbrake. It seems.... 425 crank ford hp :yawinkle: and 3.3k# weight. Insiders swear they are 3.3k# cars.
"Test cars when ford was developing the car put up numbers in the 9.80's at ~140 mph IIRC. That's all I could really say."
"The autos run 9's w footbrake."
"Everybody knows a hi stall built auto will outrun a man by a few tenths."

That's why the hoosiers on last 2, the goodyears didn't hookup enough w the auto so the guy from ks. said. Holzman shop.
Hi 9's from a nhra "stock" car? Back in 70 that was pro stock ranges. And for fact a 68.5 428 cj ran around 12.5's in nhra "stock" class. Guess 425 hp nhra was weak back then, those cars were lighter too.

"Whoops! I missed that trans question! Both of our cars will be running 4speed G-Force transmissions, along with McLeod clutches, flywheels, pressure plates, and bellhousings. The G-Force is very similar to the Jerico though, and has a V-gate shifter."

They already sold all 50, will make 50 more w new body style. Looks like maybe half will end up racing, some go to barrett jackson, some being stored away. I was surprised #1 was racing. Then there are the 3 prototypes. I wish they were 30k or so myself. The g force cars are the calvert ones. Face tooth transmissions, dog box some say.

Wow that’s a truly bad ass car, not sure if I like that huge hood scoop though....

69gt4speed
01-31-2009, 01:25 AM
That's a boss 429 replica hood scoop, I've got a real boss 429 scoop on my 69 hood. I figure the new stang looks like a 69/70 front wise mo or less and figured ford racing thought a boss 429 scoop looked more badazz. The 68.5's 428's and reg mach's had a smaller scoop stock. This is all retro basically to commemorate the 68.5 428 cj. New ones suppose to have a like 15" dia hole cut out in hood like the old boss 429's idk. I wish I had that alum hood option cause it's like 18#.

Yea like it or not these cars are badazz just goes to show what a lighter weight car can do w/o all the etc. stuff. Figure a shelby weighs 4k u drop weight to 3.3k or less, it's a animal w/o tearing up stuff like a porker does w same parts. With cats it would pass most anywhere emissions. It's got ford gt cams.

Well LOL there be much fighting by the chevy boys over the cj hp rating, they had to shut it down at 500 posts. Now seems to me since the ls1 was/is rated by nhra at 305hp fair is fair. On nhra.com there is a full spread about the cars and hp at 425 and 2 autos and 2 sticks, I can't post it here, copyright stuff. Oh chevy cancelled their racing program and dodge put it on hold so... cj's compete w other cars, why the cry of foul.

What one guy says...
"The thing that really bothers me about this is that it's obvious that Ford did this with hp numbers they knew were bogus and that's like stealing. The other thing is that NHRA let them get away with it without protecting their own members from unfair competition."

Well times are hard, more spectators = mo money. Frpp is giving out $1k for any cj that wins this yr. Better than 1 mil bathroom upgrades by wall street tycoons paid by us imo.

I might add looking on nhra website that pulley looks pretty big, larger than a stock gt 500 but it does have the tvs so idk. About a week we find out. Pomona is the debut. Feb 5th to 9th. It is not test and tune then.

Did I mention ford back into pro stock w that hot woman driver? Brian Wolfe is the man...head of frpp.

Ok Tuesday no rain finally, John Calvert is in semifinals down to 3 cars, Idk what happened to Stinnett, broke maybe, don't know it was the a/sa car. Calvert is a/s car w the 4 speed dogbox. If he wins be almost a miracle w a stick.

1 other d/sa auto, Tom Gaynor (96 firebird) and 1 other b/s, Jeff Huffman (69 mustang) stick left. Ran out of time, finish wed? This started btw w 87 cars in stock competition. Racing handicapped. Calvert's index is around 10.1. Yes, I'd like it to come down to new vs old stang.

69gt4speed
02-11-2009, 02:17 PM
It's stacked against Calvert, he has to run the Huffman 69 stang first, Gaynor in the auto 96 firebird gets a freebie.

Huffman's 69 stang redlights against Calvert's 08 cj by -.030. Calvert runs a 10.13 on a 10.14 index dial in.... both run under their index dial in, Calvert's is less though.

Final.... it's Tom Gaynor in the auto 96 firebird vs John Calvert in the manual 08 Cobra jet, they stage, line up, tree goes down and Gaynor redlights by -.079..... holy sh-t... Calvert runs a 10.136 on a 10.14 index dial w a .085 r/t... I can't believe it, first time ever in a race the 2008 cobra jet Wins stock eliminator... History has been made AGAIN... :supz:

Guess what I have some real dynojet numbers on the cobra jet as delivered. :bigthumb: Holy sh-t. I was off by approx 75 rwhp. That is a pump gas tune too. I have a boost number also. It is pretty much what I already said. Very pump gas friendly. I can't say the #... rwhp is north of zr1 stock #. Same boost.

I don't get it. Why is it so secretive?

69gt4speed
03-01-2009, 05:28 PM
Why is it secretive.. Well say you are a nascar team and spent a lot of time and money developing a package and getting it approved. And you did a few tricks and got by w it and had a competive advantage. You think they would want it known? It would be known soon enough granted but for a lil while they have the edge.

Nhra stock class is the same rules pretty much as nascar. Every mod has to be approved beforehand. The hp rating, the weight, the motor, the tranny, etc. etc. Just getting cj approved at 425 hp and 3275 #. While a gt500 is at 3860# w rated 500 hp. Ok the rwhp is between 375 and 625. 15# boost. 15 deg timing. But remember it is index/handicapped racing. You only get a wally if you beat every other stock class racer. 15 sec. or 11 sec. It's complicated to say the least and expensive. Bottom line nhra rated low hp and decent weight. Those cobalts are popular btw.

Stinnett ran a verified 9.78 w the auto. I'd probably go to streetfire or youtube look up a gt500 dyno w say a 2.3 whipple or 2.8 kb at 15 to 17# there is your answer approx. Maybe it has ford gt cams in it idk..
