I think I wish the transfer case had been the problem.

I hope they used the updated dual cone 2nd gear. That is the ONLY way to go. Hell I had a standard early 2nd gear in the garage you could have had if thats what they used.

I probably could have found a fully built trans w/4 spider diff for about $1000 if I had checked into it.

OT Do you use a spec 3+ ? Just curious as that is what I have in the vette and wondering how it feels in a DSM.

Drifte
02-24-2009, 08:45 PM
spec stage 3 (+ idk), 6puck sprung hub. It feels like stock in pedal pressure, but grabs very firmly. Between shifts it can be rough, but the clutch is known for its harsh engagement (later related to drive train problems from the shock).

Works fine for me.

Regular spec 3. Loved that clutch. My brother has the spec 3+. Actually easier todive.

Im leaning towards a lighter color as it makes the car look completely different from a black wheel. I like both, but its a different look.

If either of us actually get them it would be awesome.

Some bad news. Kevin was hospitalized right after I talked to him about 2 weeks ago. He had meningitis, and currently is recovering. Its the 5th case this year alone and 3 others died. SO basically right after I said go ahead and order parts, he went to the ER (well, the following morning before he was to order). I'm thankful he's improving and can't obviously hold it against him. I have his number 2 man working on it now and getting the parts.

I was really looking forward to driving my car again, but it looks like it will be a bit longer.

Trans fluid:
AMS suggested fluid: 50/50 mix of BG Synchro and Redline Shockproof light. for a trans with mileage on it.
AMS, Shep: 50/50 mix of BG Synchro and Redline Shockproof heavy for a fresh trans .
TRE says DONT! http://www.teamrip.com/manual_transmiss ... _info.html (http://www.teamrip.com/manual_transmission_gear_oil_recommendation_info.h tml)
So maybe use redline mt-90 mix with shockproof light? idk

Trans was supposed to be done early this week. Also was supposed to be done earlier the week before. As of today it still has not been touched. It is waiting for new parts still and "may" be finished next week.

I think we know where not to go if you NEED your car...

Xboosted23X

i know for my trans i ran 2 qts or heavy duty shockproof and 1qt of valvaline.
the stock evo fluid is supposed to be really good also.
i would just stick to what our trans builder said to run.

Intercooler is Apex-i GT, charge pipe too. Rad hose is ok, just a shadow. Been busy looking for a new car for the GF and havent had a chance to do much with it. Did clay bar and polish it though. I sat a bottle of windex on the hood and it slid off...so I must have done that right.

yea we'll be needing to do an intake for Brianna's car as well. Both 3". In my case the 2gmaf we may want to flare to 4" or just use a coupler. We'll talk soon. May have to call though haven't been on the comp much lately.

O'reillys had a bottle of royal purple on the shelf for $10 so I grabbed it and asked if they had more. SO she went to the back and got me 3 more. I payed, $65 or something, and went on my way. Get home its the wrong weight except for the one I grabbed and its the wrong price. So trans is in, now I need to get some fluid and drive it. As of now the new trans feels really really notchy.

Colton, so is the tranny still fubar after the build? I would be very upset if I were you. Jenn's Altima was just in the body shop and today the undershields came flying off. I am going to raise hell, I suggest you do the same... if it's their fault.

Drifte
03-23-2009, 09:02 PM
My tune right now is from the chip. After I get it all straightened out I can order my new gauges and start getting a finer tune. Trevor will be making my new intake, new air filter on the way. Its true what they say...I dont beat on it...65% throttle is considered a fun day for me.

My trans is fine, in fact its great. The seal didnt hold on the case in once spot, my only hope is that once fixing that they put royal purple oil back in. Thank god I didnt get that cocktail of a redline mix in, or I would be even more upset.

So. I had to supply the new fluid, another $33 down the drain, and they couldnt figure out how to start the car. The alarm on or alarm off feature was to complicated. Then they managed unhook my maf from the intake so when my brother went to pick it up it wouldnt run.
End result....Just never go to kevins, I may make a thread just for it...maybe after I talk to him again tomorrow after I test drive it some more.

You know I live in waterloo right? I hate to see you have these problems, but I told you so. For a $1000 I might have found you a built, 4 spider diff, dual cone synchro, etc box. Well at least I hope it holds up so you can get some time behind the wheel

Drifte
03-26-2009, 11:45 PM

Have 200miles on the transmission now. I got home tonight and popped the hood, and my exhaust manifold was glowing rediculous. Now list o things to check:

Oil
ignition
Fuel

Tomorrow will run the timing light and check base timing, and check the oil. Looking for a new PDA to check fuel trims. And here is a pic of the new oil feed, opinions on routing? Maybe to restrictive this way? It didnt help oil pressure at all when switching it from the OFH to the head. The line is fairly lengthy and twisty...

hmm, plugs were solid white.

"i had this issue last week when my car was out. glowing orange. pretty impressive.
i am in the market for a new turbo and checking the head."

So you had a problem and it took out the turbo? Stock?

Did a boost leak test because I knew I had one. The bov wasnt seating fully because of a weld that stops the bolt. So i tried to grind a little off, and woops its through and a hole now. Tried to weld it and welder isnt working well so now I have a mess...jeeze.

slow ride
03-30-2009, 06:43 PM
You guys know in closed loop (like on the highway) the car is running around 14.7 AFR to achieve good economy right? This tends to cause high EGT's even under light load. I'm thinking what you are seeing is just normal. I would see close to 800C in the manifold on the highway with a 16g depending on speed, etc, etc. A larger the turbine housings will tend to cool off these EGT's on big turbo cars due to less backpressure in the exhaust stream.

Xboosted23X
03-30-2009, 07:55 PM
it was on my 60-1
my manifold and turbo were glowing. im sure i had some boost leaks. pry some big ones.
ive never seen it glow like that before. def dont think its normal

Drifte
03-30-2009, 08:36 PM
Yea I understand some glow is normal. But usually I can watch it stop glowing withing a minute of parking and the car idling. In this case it did not and was glowing unusually bright. I cant find my egt probe/wire just the gauge :/.

I had been cruising at 55 for about an hour then theirs the 35ish zone the last 3 miles home where the car can really cool down. Thats why I was worried about the intense glow I had going on.

New question/concern. When my PDA does show up, will my fuel trim readings be accurate since I have this keydiver chip?

New question/concern. When my PDA does show up, will my fuel trim readings be accurate since I have this keydiver chip?

I would suspect that in a perfect world they should be in the Zero's just like on a normal car, because the switchs to injectors and airflow should even things out. Drop jeff a email, hes pretty quick about emailign people back.

n8kerns
03-31-2009, 01:06 AM
I would suspect that in a perfect world they should be in the Zero's.

100% is perfect on 1g's, 0's are for 2nd gens =)
And depending on the air it may not be 100%, in the winter mine added fuel because the air is more dense. Haven't checked it recently, I'm scared to see that something is off lol =P

And yes they should read correctly, only thing that will need math to figure out is the airflow if you have the 2x karman option on your chip.

PDA is shipping. Charge pipe has been modified, worked it over this weekend and have the BOV flange redone. FP intake was also stripped tonight and cleaned up. Filled my driveshaft carrier bearings with Polyurethane for a temporary repair. Boots on those were all torn and that somewhat explains the noises they make.

4" exhaust? dont you mean 3".... you dont need 4" prob would lose power. 3" is good for 700hp

Drifte
04-03-2009, 10:02 AM
Going by my turbo bible least restriction is the best answer, so bigger or none should make most power. we'll see what I learn in the time I have before I actually do it.

Nate, idk what ya have their. looks like they gave ya pads for the front though.

TbTalon94
04-03-2009, 10:32 AM
3" Aluminum will do just fine colton. A 4" aluminum exhaust would just be asking to crush it hitting something. With your already low ground clearance 4" would be a disaster waiting to happen.

BTW...3" v-band aluminum exhaust is something i've been really wanting to do, and since there are 1-2 bends in your cat-back....lets do it :)

Drifte
04-03-2009, 01:52 PM
yea it would have to be oval 4" to fit it.
def not hard to build exhaust for this car. I think I could sell the apex- i stuff too, to pay for it.

Jappbox
04-03-2009, 03:32 PM
You would think less restriction makes more power, but its not true. Some of the top shops have tested this thery and inless your going to plan on making 700whp, you will "lose" power with a 4" exhaust.. sounds crazy yes i know, but there is alot of Tech and testing that has proved this. Stick with 3"

Drifte
04-04-2009, 05:49 PM

Xboosted23X
04-04-2009, 06:05 PM
i was looking at starting the dp at 3 then going to a 3.5 for the rest.
you want to have the discharge size the same size as the piping then slowly increase your size to get proper airflow

TIMA 1deg
RPM 900
INJP 2.0ms
FTRL 100%
FTRM 100%

TbTalon94
04-08-2009, 07:12 PM
you need to sit there awhile with your logger on. Your fuel trims haven't moved yet. The FT02 should fluctuate as it's adjusting the fuel to keep the fuel trims in check. They should be pretty close though being as you have a chip.

Drifte
04-08-2009, 07:31 PM
ft02 was fluctuating. low was 59%. I cant load logs on here (mac osx). Im gonna go check base timing again...i never trust those things. Car was at operating temp when those numbers were read.

got a clearer timing reading. My CAS has some strange wires on it, little to short to advance the timing to where it needs to be. For now its retarded a bit set closer to 0 degrees. Tomorrow I can take care of the base timing. Try some RTV on the BOV gasket as its just not wanting to seal. Blitz made it so the bolt threads into the aluminum bov...so I gotta be real careful torquing it down.

After all that I can log again and run it through someones PC and post that up so we can see how good that chip is.

Drifte
04-20-2009, 01:31 PM
^ yea went to wire in my gauges today. Real simple power and ground, I wire it through the dimmer no big deal. But of course I have to work on that rats nest of wires. Well idk what happened, but nothing works and for a while their was some clicking, and a beeping, now nothing. I have to guess its related to the alarm. I disconnected my gauges anyway just to be sure. Haven't found a blown fuse anywhere either which is not cool either. I just got all the covers and junk back in when it stopped working. The gauges were working fine before hand.

so once my hand stops bleeding and I eat something I will be back out their under my dash.

talked to Eric last night sleepingtsi94. Can get a pretty awesome deal on those carrier bearings. So once that drive shaft gets rebuilt...I'll be pretty set!

Have to figure out how im ordering those U-Joints. The best joints are the ones that come in the re-call kit with the yolk. May just order 3 of those and press 2 out. Not 100% sure on that yet. I hear the grease-able ones are weaker too.

needs more boost. 10psi got really boring fast.

also need:

ALL new brakes. I want to run the baer bear claws up front but cant with my stupid 16's. 17's would work. Rear will get new calipers, probably should do soft lines, new pads and rotors. Would like to run drilled/slotted rotors but idk if its worth the extra money.

going to order through Mitsu; 3 drive shaft yolk recall parts with u-joints. press 2 out for the rest of the drive shaft, and order 2 new carrier bearings. I have to talk with Sadler yet but may be able to get the drive shaft replaced with a 2 piece unit. If not they will probably assemble everything and re-balance it.

figured you would have an update....? care to share your fun weekend?

Drifte
05-18-2009, 02:31 PM
Sure. Car was running great, had a little hiccup at one point. Then for no aparent reason it died. After a good bit of testing and trial and error we discovered the A-pexi SAFC went bad and causing the problems. After which the car drove better than ever before. The tune is really rich now so I just avoid full throttle.

The find goes to Ricky their, rummaging through the bare wires off the ECU to find the culprit. Good thing I have the AFC wiring stuck in my head too.

weekend was all good and fun before that.

Drifte
05-25-2009, 10:41 PM
Still have had some issues. Seemed to run fine but the tach was getting a poor signal. Occasionally lagging or bouncing a little. I went ahead and switched out the CAS with a known good one and the coil pack transistor. I seem to have a bit of a stumble, but it may also be a boost leak. The roads I drive on are treacherous and tear my car apart.

On a good note I bought myself a birthday present.

Finally installed new brakes on the rear of the Talon.
Remanufactured calipers = $235
Core+ -$70
Ceramic pads= $45
Brake Fluid=$4.35
Brake clean=$3.29
Brake Rotors= $50

for a grand total of: $267.64

The price for parts on this car have gotten outrageous. But you cant put a price on stopping. The brakes that were on their appeared original and were completely junk. Completely frozen up and no pad left at all. Stopping should be a good bit different now. Next month I think it will get the Big Brakes up front, that should be a lot of fun.

05-31-2009, 09:50 PM
Colton,

I had to put a rear brake hardwear kit on scarlet this weekend. Man what a PITA.

I was having all kinds of problems with the rear calipers. I dont remember them being that bad when I did the rear breaks last summer.

Drifte
06-01-2009, 08:23 AM
Yea, I should have also mentioned most of the parts required heat to get apart. sheared off one bolt, had to drill it out and tap it. Really hate doing that, so I am searching for a good drivers rear caliper bracket.

my little brake. Can only hope it stays this pretty. You can kinda tell the wheel well was stripped, undercoated and brushed gloss black. If you cant tell...then now ya know anyway. had a sweet boost leak, found a gouge in my lowest charge pipe coupler, swapped it out and noticed my bov leaks pressure out...?

06-01-2009, 11:12 PM
Yeah I made a BLT tester today. Waiting on the glue to dry then I'm going to test it tomorrow. I know I have a leak due to the fact it acts like fuel cut around 6500 but I have dsmlink so no fuel cut.

I am willing to bet it's a coupler or BOV thats losing it all.

Negative.^

But on a good note. Big brakes are on their way. Pieced it together online to get it a lot cheaper. A dsm that stops...what will I do with myself. Think Im going to go the cheaper route with suspension and use AGX's and megan springs or eibach pro kit. Once the exhaust is done the car will appear to be a bone (bone...vague term, front mount kinda obvious) stock everday dsm.

Also recently read my lengthy start up may be due to some teflon tape off the FPR having gotten inside it. Will have to pull that off and have a look.

06-06-2009, 11:23 PM
I have megan springs and have GR-2's struts. All was new a couple of months ago. So far so good. They dont ride like garbage and handle pretty well. Just make sure you get a camber kit for them. DME is like 54 bucks from Extremepsi.com

I used teflon tape on the return line on the AFPR and it leaked right away so I took it off and vola nothing, works like a charm.

Drifte
06-07-2009, 02:56 AM
i have teflon tape on the gauge fitting only. Currently my car is slammed on some GR2's and broken goldline springs. I have adjustable rear upper control arms already. Plan to get cam bolts for the front and pull in some negative camber. If I get coil overs though its a whole new game. I had megan springs on gr2s and then on AGX's. Rode nice but far from "high performance."

Weighed the Talon this afternoon in Iowa City. I had myself and a bunch of junk in their from a weekend trip. Weighed in at 3,040lbs. Thats a half tank of gas as well. So dry without my and my junk 2,800lbs or so. Not to bad for full interior. That leather is heavy stuff.

Some racing buckets, and aluminum gear should really lighten it up. Really need to get that drive shaft done up asap too.

PIMking do you not vent to the atmosphere for your bov

i need to clean up my engine bay but im keeping power steering

07-09-2009, 11:16 PM
Unless you have a 3" gm mass air meter behind the BOV.

Our cars meters the air pre turbo so when you dont retun the air into the system your ecu dumps in fuel for the air the maf told it was getting.

So unless your maf is behind the BOV I would say no.

Your car should have a slight sluggish feeling right after you shift.

But really if your only in it for the sound then be my guest but the sound wont make you faster.

Drifte
09-12-2009, 12:50 PM
Boring update, splash guards in. Had a strange ignition problem. I went ahead and went over every wire. Now I have a misfire instead of just losing all ignition. Have to figure out now what thats about. I think I've narrowed it down to cylinder 1 mis and possible fuel issue. When I pulled the plugs a little smoke/steam came out of #1.

09-12-2009, 01:31 PM
Could be your Power TR unit. or Coil. if 1 is the only one out than its probably your TR unit.

Now if 1 is out and 4 is out its your coil.

09-12-2009, 08:51 PM

what do your plugs look like? normal? if you had stem comoing out maybe you are geting a little coolent in there. Check the cylinders, if the pistions look brand new that could be a issue, would cause a miss for sure.

krustindumm
09-15-2009, 01:38 PM
lol, the pistons SHOULD look brand new....how many miles are on that engine, like 200?

plugs look normal.

TbTalon94
09-15-2009, 03:22 PM
How close did you look on the plugs, could have a crack in the porcelin. That'll make it mis-fire and you'll be chasing that forever lol.

Otherwise have you checked the regular, coil/cas/injector resistor/transistor/grounds

krustindumm
09-15-2009, 05:26 PM
I never heard a missfire except when checking for spark. It just starts & dies. I'm thinking the MAF signal has to be messed up, it's the only thing that's not used at startup.

TbTalon94
09-15-2009, 05:36 PM
So it starts, but just doesn't stay running?

Stumbles at all, or just starts then dies.

krustindumm
09-15-2009, 06:47 PM
slows and dies, doesn't ever seem to miss. It gets rough, but only cause it's slowing down. Normally I'd start at the coolant temp sensor, but it's reading normal.

Ricky
09-15-2009, 10:48 PM
I vote MAF i had mine tweaked a little after the Front Mount and the car ran like shit and died.

Drifte
09-16-2009, 12:00 AM
Checked ECU, MAF, Ignition, Fuel. Im tempted to drop in the automatics ECU and see what happens....

At start up it is stumbling, but it revs up at start up to about 2,500 holds a bit then stumbles to a stop. ISC unhooked it runs a little longer, kind of like a choke.

Pistons all have some carbon build up. All readings are good at the logger, but its only a start up read to stall. So Im not looking at typical idle numbers to get a good reading.

I did watch timing closely starting at -5 to +25 and dieing back down with the stall. Plugs are clean, have about 3k on them. Each were tested and good. Resistance in the plug wires seemed high, but I still sustained even spark so I can keep those.

Have tried 2 coil packs, 2 Power TR's. May try TPS for the hell of it.

Jappbox
09-16-2009, 07:35 AM
if you hold the gas a bit will it stay alive, or does it still stumble and die?

My girlfriend has always though the talon was a Attention whore of a bitch...I'd say shes pretty much correct.

she also says she (the talon) has me whipped. Every time I shift you hear the whip crack ;)

The strange issue has been solved! Last time it died on me the last thing I did before it started running again was take the ecu apart and put it back in. Sent the ECU off to ECMlink for testing, and sure enough (as i had suspected) the chip socket had a lose connection. The Socket is being replaced with a new one and getting soldered in.

Its still for sale, Im looking at big slow vehicles to drive now. Also has new struts in the front, and new front wheel bearing. I have a rear wheel bearing to install yet, along with the larger 2 piston brakes up front.

Haha I drive a big 4x4 when the talons down for upgrades. So I get a taste of slow and it's boring but reliable.

How about small and slow?
Have you ever seen the acceleration of the 1.8L DSM's?

A fellow mechanic once had a 1.8l and he had 3" exhaust put on it (because I had it...). It was a sweet ride. I cant say I ever first hand experienced its acceleration.

3 inch on a N/A 1.8? Did it get slower but sound faster?

I would like to get a 2.5" exhaust on my laser but I'd feel like a ricer.

Honestly for some reason I LOVE the sound of the 1.8L - it's like the sound of a 2.0L but more even/smoother sounding. I drove one with an exhaust once and it sounded great.

But again I'd feel like a ricer. My timed 0-60 is 11 seconds :(

My 25-60 is about 7seconds, using 3rd gear. Im probably the only person that would measure such a strange thing, but im usually in 3rd so i was curious.

and eric, to say it got faster or slower i have nooooooooooo idea. It simply seemed louder. lol

It's kinda funny how my wastegate spring change, went to new wastegate, to v-band wastegate, to all new turbo gaskets which then led to helecoiling the turbo. And so yea, now I need a dump tube. I have some pics to upload. Whats the fastest way to get pics off an iphone?

Ah very nice. I would say please let me weld it, but the other welds on the o2 housing aren't that great anyway.

Quite a short tube!

This is my minus 10 horsepower mod. However, we had some warpage issues. Thought we could fix it but the little sucker is leaking pre wastegate at the valve seat. Not good. But here it is assembled and on the car.

yeah, you need to have that merge a little further away.

Merge any closer and it makes getting a wrench on the dp bolts more difficult. I like to have fun in my car, and every time I'd open up the wastegate before I'd have to make sure their weren't cops around for a couple miles. Ofcourse I am going to have to figure out a way to pull the gate in tighter before its any use. I think I'll bring the car to op temp and torque on that v-band... :banghead:

man, I wish I had a place like that to work in. This winter's going to suck with our tiny garage 1 2/3 car garage trying to work on it with 2 cars in the garage. I say 1 2/3 because it is hardly a 2 car garage. Both cars have to be small-medium or one has to be really small if the other is large. My firebird really pushed it.

I'd make a video like that through the winter but nothing looks wise would change a whole lot haha, just the head / tranny coming out.
