View Full Version : Daytona vs Miata

So I was heading to Ames from Ankeny this evening and I see this Miata in front of me with underglow and figured I'd try to play with him. We cruise for a little bit at 80 mph and he gets the jump on me. I catch up at 90 and pass at about 95. We go to about 110 when I have about a car on him. We slow down back to 80 and I count down from 3 and we go. I start pulling away right off and already a car ahead at 100 and stop at 110 again. We do it again with the same results. Then I had to get off on my exit.

you should figure out how to swap in a 4G63 into your Daytona and really leave people wondering what youve got going. theyre all Mitsu built parts; i would assume they have to have a similar mounting setup.
just a neat idea i thought

Or a turbo 2.5 would be a lot easier.

dont some daytonas come turbo or something. i know theirs some performance oriented models. 3.0 v6 and 2.2/2.5l 4 bangers. Wonder what the best option is.

I've seen some turboed SOHC V-6s and they put down some major power but it is a serious pain in the ass to do. If I wanted to do a swap, it would be easier just to buy the whole car. It's a pain to swap from auto to manual so its better to have a manual car to start with. Yeah, it would be sweet to put a 4g63 in one. There were turbo 2.2s and 2.5s. I wish I could find a turbo 3 or 4 Daytona.

they were pretty rare and there is an almost a non-existant aftermarket for them. good luck finding one, and if you do, it'll probably be pretty damn expensive.
and about the 5 speed swap, you could keep it auto and it could build up boost on the launch.

Yeah but the A604 transmission is weak as hell. It's hard to build it to last and take power at the same time.

im wondering if you could use a FWD DSM tranny....
biohazard
07-16-2007, 07:12 PM
I think the only transmissions that will mount up to my V-6 is the A604 and the A543 5 spd manual. Even tho it is a 6G72, I don't think a DSM transmission will mount up.

4G63 with the matching DSM tranny, fab mounts to your stock mounts. that could work...

Could work. I wonder how much that would cost. Better than my idea of making it rwd with a nice 318 or 360. Cheaper probably.

do that, those cars look like they should be rwd any ways. or do what dustin is doing with his truck. rwd with 4g63.....

its kindof neat to imagine what the 80's wouldve been like if the Daytona was V8 powered and RWD. even the FWD Turbo 4cyl kept up with the Foxbody mustangs and turd gen camaros...

or how about sell it and buy a better platform? It's like moding a Town & Country. Theres no point.

i actually really enjoy the looks of late 80's/early 90's Daytona's. just wish they made them RWD and with a V8 to fight the Camaros and Mustangs...

No offense but I don't really think dodge was trying to compete with anything in the 80s/90s. I think they were trying to be as cheap as possible and make as much profit as possible.

Maybe because they had 180-220hp?
Thats nothing to brag about.

stock HO 5.0L's put out 220hp, about the same for TPI 5.7's.
They had less power, but still pulled around the same times in the quarter, and handled just as well as the pony cars. they just werent as popular or easy to mod as the pony cars.

The amount of aftermarket can definitely make or break a car.

pretty much; can you imagine what it would be like if the Daytona was RWD? what if Daytona's were everywhere like Foxbody's and Camaros? i'll tell you this, 360's would be a lot cheaper and easier to find....

Yeah, I wish they were cheaper and easier to find. A year before I graduate/commission, I can pull out a low interest $20k loan. I was thinking about using it to pay off some loans and get the Daytona done right.

Don't do it. Buy something thats a better platform to mod on. The only reason to modify uncommonly modified vehicles is if you have TONS of knowledge and patience or very deep pockets.

modding FWD just sucks, period. whether its a car u love or not.
there were some pretty sweet daytonas tho. shelby has some nice turbos available. there were like 3 stages. 350 tpi's also were closer to 240-250 region haha. i want an iroc with a 350 tpi so badly

I would love to find a Stage 4 Shelby, but they want 3 arms and 2 legs for it if you can find one.

truth be told, if given the choice, i would probably take an Omni GLH-S over any of the Shelby Daytonas; those little things were monsters!

I wished I would've raced a Miata before I removed my catalytic converter. I want to see if I gained any power. I know the car is a bit louder, but I could've put the cherry bomb in so it didn't quiet it at all.

You would of lost a little back end pressure. So you would of lost low end torque. But you gained horsepower. But not enough to be noticeable. I would say only 2-3 at the most. You can only really feel or see a difference at about 10-15 horsepower.

i doubt it made much of a difference at all. unless i am mistaken, there are no other mods done to the car, so the slightly free-er flowing exhaust probably wouldnt matter much.
just my opinion

Yes you're right. Exhaust and intake kind of work hand in hand.

Well, time to do some intake work then. Now if I can find a decent TB.

I really wouldn't worry about a throttle body unless you just wanted to port and polish yours. Only worry about throttle body if you mess with the valve-train or change out your heads. Just look into a nice quality Cold air intake for now.
