what do you think the chances would be that you could just flip a set of hugger headers over, weld on a T4 flange and have some top mount turbo headers? i was told i could just cut away the flange area in between the pipes for clearance. and i have mounted apair of headers to my engien upside down and they where fine.

these are the type headers i will be getting: the ones pictured are SSAC, I WILL NOT be getting these exact ones, they just had some decent pics, and the ones i am getting are the exact same shap and everything. they are just a MUCH better quality!

the only problem i foresee would be hood clearance, but nothing a little cuttin cant fix.

its been done, all you will need to do is massage some metal out here and there so you can squeeze it under the hood otherwise your going to have to fab up some bumps in the hood.

More than likley you will have clearace issues with the valve covers. Those block huggers have a tight radius out of the head and run along the engine down under the car. When you turn them upside down they are going to want to curve twards the valve cover. They will need some Cut and weld to fit.

agreed.

why not try to route the exhaust up and forward, and mont the turbos at the front of the engine? that would help keep them low and within the hoodline.

Yeah, i would rather have them there and not have to cut. However i have no tubing bender or anything like that. They sell a set the mounts them in front of the engine, but they are like $350 or $200 from SSAC. i figured i could get a nice set of hooker huggers or similar brand for around $100 and have some nice quality headers for 1/4 the price. Or i could have a set made, but again we're talkin $400+.
I would like to build a set like below, but have no idea where to get the piping, and again probably talking $300+ after i buy the needed parts and pay to have them welded (my welder SUCKS!!)

Heres is EXACTLY what i want (even made for my car) however I (like everyone else) have heard nothing good about SSAC. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/SBC-T3-T ... enameZWDVW (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/SBC-T3-T4-Turbo-Headers-Camaro-Firebird-SB-Chevy_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33631QQhashZitem1 50069394614QQihZ005QQitemZ150069394614QQrdZ1QQsspa genameZWDVW)

the thing is, i know youre trying to save money, but if you buy a set of headers that arent meant to mount up turbos with the intention of modifying them to make them work, you run the risk of destroying a brand new set of headers, and theres no garantee it will work.

this possibility completely goes against the desire to save money, especially if you have to buy the more expensive headers after you cant get the cheaper ones to work. i say buy the SSAC ones that are meant for the application, and find out yourself what is wrong with them. if anything, if they fail, you'll have a pair of headers to go off of if you want build your own set some day.

Just buy a box of tubes and fabb some up yourself. There are companys that sell tubing and flanges just for fabbing up headers. Most custom turbo headers are buit this way. I cant remember the Name of the company, but Chris Williams "the WAGON" showed me a company that sold bends and flanges, In different grades of material. I know he planned on building a new set for his car out of SS. Which would be the best bet, but it has some added cost. But even if you use mild steel tack your tubes in place and just need someone to finish weld them, you would have something that would work better for you.

trying to go cheap on a turbo setup is just going to lead to problems, I've seen it, and I've experienced it first hand. It is worth it to spend the money.

I know you really want to go turbo, but if you cant afford $400 for a set of headers, forget about it.

i would say if you dont have access to a good welder, dont even try to do anything on your own. if you do, you can make your own manifolds and everything. or use other manifolds how they were ment to be mounted, and route your own piping. I just buy boxes of 3" mandrel (and 2.5") bends for my projects.

I can afford it, i just dont like spending more money than i have to. At the moment i dont have a ton of money as i just bought a '93 Lumina, a set of Forged aluminum rods, MSD 6BTM, a pair of T-70s, camshaft, full gasket kit, and a couple other misc things. So yeah, i guess as of this second i cant afford to spend $400.

buy flanges, then buy elbows & T's from mcmaster.com
