View Full Version : Lightning vs. RX8

I usually refrain from doing much screwing around on the streets around here, but coming home late last night a black RX8 w/gold rims wouldn't leave me alone.
He pulled up behind me in my lane and was pretty much riding my bumper so close I couldn't see his headlights. I could hear him reving his exhaust (obviously aftermarket) and hitting the throttle.
With no one in front of me, and only this tool behind me, I stayed about 30 MPH going from the frontage ramp to the Interstate. He continued to rev and ride me.
Once the ramp merged with the Interstate I hopped into the middle lane and he pulled up next to me in the right and stomped on it.
I kicked it down to first going about 30 and it just spun like mad. Finally gripped, hit 2nd and had more tire spin. Hooked up in 2nd finally and I was walking past this guy like nothing. 3rd hit and I chirped the tires and couldn't hear his exhaust over the super charger whine. Looked back around 120 and he was WAY back.
I guess his factory 159 ft lbs of torque was no match for my 486 :)

bahahhahah
Awesome. Hopefully he had a friend in there with him so he could feel embarrassed like he should be.
That's where a little car knowlege comes in handy. Don't try picking on a car that can stomp you.

Yeah the new RX8s are kinda lame.
Iv'e seen times of F/I'ed RX8s and their still not impressive or something to worry about.

Oh hell yes, I'd never go back to a small displacement motor after this except for a daily commuter car. Nothing like a ton of torque :)

I'm not sure, but it's just 15 minutes south of downtown Austin.

I like the idea behind Lightnigs, stockish looking truck but fast as hell from the factory, but being a Chevy guy I have to bash them a little bit because the Joe Gibbs Silverados are still faster.

I thought the Gibbs silverados were weak, just a stock 5.3 with different intake and exhaust? I could be wrong though.

yeah, I really dont think they are faster than a lightning. Not even the silverado SS beats a lightning

wait wait wait... apparently the gibbs silverado is a 5.3 SC. still, the review put it at right above 14.0 sec consistantly. thats alright i guess....
something funny in the article from "super chevy magazine"
"Our quarter-mile showed consistent passes just above 14 seconds. More than fast enough to roast your every day import tuner or kid with a noisy 5.0L. "
how many of you import drivers have noisy 5.0L? :)

some are but you could get them with a roots super charged 4.8 with a 4-speed and a Hurst shifter and some accually had decent gears

if they never existed, youd never be able to put a 5 speed in a turd-gen with factory parts. you should thank your lucky stars for the 305

I tried to buy the Lightning they have at Cassill right now but as far as I'm concerned they're being crackheads on the price. It's a 12 mpg truck and gas is 3.20 a gallon, trying to get 4000 over Edmunds retail seems a little greedy.
The one they just got at Junge is even worse. I didn't bother trying to haggle with them, with a 19 grand asking price for a 99 lightning with a bed that is just flat out destroyed, I figured theres no way they'd lower it to anything that isn't plain ridiculous.

junge tends to want alot for their vehicles. they had a 94/95 cobra w/ like 70 or 80k and wanted like 13 or 14k for it, then had a new edge roush that sat there for an eternity because it was obviously beat to hell and had bad paint but they were asking a ton for it.

The SS's have nothing on a joe gibbs, they dont handle as good or have as much power either

only problem is, the Lightning has a MUCH better aftermarket available for it. i would probably still go for the Silverado though, im not much a fan of the Ford truck looks....

the 5.3L's actually have a fairly broad market 4 them. share a lot of components with the lsx family. its an ls1 block they used 4 them. theres many 5.3L aftermarket h/c combo's out there. def wouldnt expect it compared to a lightning tho.

you can get them with a lighter 4.8 sc but I'd say screw weight and get the 327 cause i think a v8 smaller than 5 L is kind of point less for a truck
