I've always had high speed access for the past 6 years. I can't remember the last time I've heard a dial-up modem sound off  . I'd like to know what everyone else out there is using. Do people still use dial up? Please cast your votes! Thanks

I have 56k but I am in the process of getting DSL within the next month. Now that I own and operate this website and about 3 others at the moment I am trying anything I can to spend LESS time on them and more time on my schoolwork. I live in an area where DSL is the only thing available.

Quick question though....which is faster generally? DSL or Cable?

I mean...there's like 6 plans for the SouthSlope DSL service. These are the plans...somebody let me know if any of these compare to Cable speed and if anyone has any suggestions on which one would benefit me best for it's price:

Okay, the first number in the row is the Upstream speed, the second number is the downstream speed, and the third number is the price.

128K 384K $ 39.95
256K 1Mb $ 45.95
384K 384K $ 79.95
512K 1Mb $99.99
768K 1Mb $139.95

Are you across the Illinios border? I am actually on someones cable modem but I am not sure whos. I opened my laptop when I moved into my apartment and boom here pops up a wireless connection. Oopps someone forgot to put a password on there router. Don't tell! hehe

And for all you Mediacom users out there, I just quite Mediacom last friday and before I left I was told they are going to be upgrading......again. Instead of you 3mbps you should be seeing 6mbps here in a few months once the new modems come out.

Cable is a better bang for the buck. MediaCom cable provides 3MB down with 512k up in Dubuque for a home package at $49/month and it's pretty much rock solid. I haven't had an outage in months. If you don't have cable though, DSL is a good choice.

Cable is a better conductor than phone line, therefore it's easier to transmit over. A phone line has 2 pairs, and your DSL will use one of those pairs. If you can visualize how small the wiring inside a phone line is versus a coax cable you can see why there's a difference. Cable also carries more insulation.

Okay I understand now.

Yah cable is not available where I live because I live out in the boonies. lol.

But if I'm thinking of everything correctly, DSL should still blow the heck out of my 56k connection. I guess that's really all i need. haha.

Spoolin are you sure you're on cable? If you live in the Kirkwood apt's I think they have wireless internet there and I *think* it's free. If that's true you might just be picking up a wireless signal because I'm sure you're laptop has those capabilities.
