View Full Version : suspension questions (motorcycle but I assume it's a "general" thing)

Working on a motorcycle to start with, first "issue" is that the lower shock mounting point is going to have to be roughly 5"-6" from the pivot point (swing arm bolt). The shock will end up at roughly a 60*-70* angle, upper mount being forward of the rear, shocks are 7"~ in length. Question here is, does the lower mounting point being that close to the pivot point render it pretty much useless or should I still get some absorbtion?

Secondly, the shock rating are 450lb/in up to about 1200lb/in. I assume I would want some heavier shocks since they are going to be so close to the pivot point? I can run two shocks it needed. Long story short, I just don't want to weld the swing arm solid like most do.

I don't have photoshop but I did what I could to get my idea across. LOL not the exact frame I am working with and the shocks will be hidden in my application but I figured it's a rough idea.

This is basically the look I'm going for but I don't want to go rigid like he did... So, none of the other frame bars will be there, just the swing arm.

Not sure if you got this handled or not but. I had YSS build me a set of shocks for my CB450 bobber a couple years ago..
Had them make a custom total length and compressed length and valved to my weight... Depending on your budget they can build you a mono shock to go in the location your after.. They will need all the geometry for the shock location and bike weight and rider weight..

I used the stock location for what I did..

ended up getting a GSXR1K shock and changed the spring out until I got what I needed. I'm at 1300lb/in right now, MIGHT need to go a little stiffer yet but I won't know until I ride it. Just need the extended throttle cable and finish mounting the seat and she is good to go. Edit: oh and paint the front rim...

I have since moved the upper shock mount back a ways so it sits under the front of the seat, it now sits a good few inches higher and looks much better.

I will say be careful when you first ride that at speed..
The biggest thing that will be out of sorts will be the rebound damping.. Which is pretty common on no link rear setups..

With how I see it in the photo it will rebound very fast.. So you may want to turn that adjustment a bit to make sure it will not pogo stick you right off the seat..
