Picked up a new "project" this past weekend. Lot's of thoughts floating around on what to do to/with it, but I plan to keep this truck as a daily driver no matter what mods are done to it so it probably won't get too wild anytime soon. Maybe a little spray to make it interesting.

How many people did you have to ask before you found out I was yanking your chain the other night?

It's just a 5.3 with springs and retainers, and a Torquer V2 cam. Stage 2 4L60 with a Circle D 3k stall, 4.10's and a posi in the rear.

The truck had nitrous on it at one time so it still has the switches for the bottle heater, arm and purge. I will probably find a used kit online one of these days and throw it on for fun.

what heads are on it? mid size turbo and 4l80 would rock on that thing.

It has 706 heads on it. The long term plan will be an 80 with a turbo

706 heads are good right? well, good for stock heads?

Nothing special, just plane old small chamber, small valve 5.3 heads. 799, 243 or 317 would be the better cathedral type casting (317 IE 6.0L truck head) having a larger less efficent 72cc or so chamber). The problem with a 5.3 is you need to keep the chambers small to make decent compression and most of the larger vlave stuff might no clear the small bore, etc.

Nice truck.

Careful with the 706 heads. They are prone to cracking. My buddy had them on his 04 RCSB and when we pulled the valve covers for his cam swap they were caked in sludge. So was his oil pan. If your truck starts drinking coolant, you know you have a problem. I have 706's on my 02 Avalanche and I add coolant on a regular basis. Will be swapping them this spring at some point.

What would be a good head to switch to? Stock style, not going to drop a couple thousand on AFR heads.

you might have to beg slow ride to port a set. he did mine but said he spent too much time on them. so i have limited edition slow ride ported 317's

I need to buy a new air compressor first (and finish my car haha):) If you run a turbo the stock heads will be just fine as long as they are in good shape, etc. I wouldn't do 317's on a 5.3l as the compression will drop too much. You could do some 799/243's and have them milled for a bump in compression and power NA, but you wouldn't need that with the turbo. The more you mill the heads the thinner the deck gets so thats not really good for sealing either.

If your stock heads are in good shape (like mentioned above) then you will be fine.

I wanted this exact truck a few years ago, I wanted to do virtually the same thing, but I ended up with my 90 gmc short box reg cab instead, good luck with the build!

He needs to be a 3.800 bore to run a 243 head I believe... We have some pretty good flow numbers hand porting the 706 heads competition products has a nice stainless valve and spring kit but you have to take make them smaller to fit in the head we just chucked them up and turned them down

ls 5.3 706 truck head ported

243's work just fine on 5.3's. 243/799 heads came on 5.3's from the factory.

Yes, in the 2007+ Trucks, so you are correct. Either way, that swap would help.

Hell, you can find a decent set of 243s on Ls1Tech for $400.00 everyday of the week and 799s are cheaper yet. Have somebody clean them up, throw in a set of springs and retainers just to be safe and its a relatively cheap upgrade.

I'll just have to keep an eye on the coolant level, if I find they are cracked ill just pick up some 243's or 799's, have them freshened up maybe have slowride port them because I know how excited he is to get his hands on another set. Then move my springs and retainers over and throw them on.

I wouldn't spend the time doing a head swap if you are going to turbo it and the stock heads are in decent shape. You can probably make more than enough power with the stockers and a turbo to break something :) Stick that money into a trans that will hold up.

derek072887
01-21-2014, 08:45 AM
yea, I won't be changing them unless they are cracked.

Just saw the rev video. Sounds..odd. What exhaust is on that thing? Sorta sounds like it has a glass pack in it somewhere (which I would cut off and smash with hammers).

Truck was picked up from Omaha, as far a a rear end swap I havn't even begun to research that yet haha

The exhaust is a pair of shorty pacesetter headers to 3" exhaust that goes into a magnaflow single 3"in to dual 2.5"? out that dumps just after the axle. This will be changed at some point even if it has to wait till I go turbo.

Shorties are for swaps and old people. Sounds like a weird setup

They should fit well in the dumpster after you put stock manifolds and a turbo on ;)

Yea it is a pretty weird setup, it will most likely stay on this year and then like slowride says they will look great in the trash when I change them back to stock manifolds.

I'd keep your eye out for a boneyard 4l80 also. Isn't his right out of the yard with a kit in it? Sell the 60 to offset the cost.

Yea I have been looking for an 80, not a ton hoping the 60 will hold together this year and next winter do a trans swap with a turbo. The current trans is the stock trans with a kit and a stall in it.

My 80E is straight from the yard with a HD2 in it. If it wasn't for a mishap last year on the dyno my $200 East side Des Moines 80E would still be going strong!

As some of you are aware the gauge clusters in the 03-08 or something years have issues with the stepper motors lagging or going out completely and stop moving. When I bought the truck I knew the gauges were starting to go but they went a little quicker than I thought, the oil pressure gauge just froze one day so I had the cluster shipped off for a full rebuild and trans temp gauge added. I plan to do some hauling with the truck this summer so I figured why not for $75

Are you just going to be purging? Or are you going to buy some fuel and nitrous solenoids?

What, you can't just put a barb fitting on the intake and open the nozzle? its a 5.3, let it eat.
