I decided it would be a good idea to grenade my T56 last week. I ended up with a built one now, but I would like to sell the broken one.

It looks like the input shaft gear stripped out and also stripped the gear off the counter shaft.
I'm told a new counter shaft and new input shaft should be all it needs, but I have no idea.
It is without the cross member and I believe I also removed the reverse sensor. No shifter either.

Make offer.

That sucks. Did it break banging gears or on a long high speed pull?

Bummer. Sorry to hear it man. I'm thinking your car lived a harsh existence prior to falling into your loving hands..

I put it in 3rd at about 50mph and floored it... she went boom.

When I replaced the input shaft for a 26 spline, I discovered that whoever put the old motor in never installed a pilot bearing. The input shaft had been wobbling around and riding on the TOB sleeve.
Lethal Performance agreed that that could have damaged the counter shaft gear. Adding a Whipple was apparently more than it could handle.

I found a D&D built trans rated for 800whp that appears to be a brand new rebuild. Had to drive to Indiana to get it, but it came with enough other junk that I'll end up with about a grand in the trans. Viper spec T56 on SVTPerformance with everything that I got in my deal is up for sale for $3700 right now. I'm happy.

Ouch. Thats shitty. Those two pieces (input and counter) are over $500. Not to mention bearings, and breakdown / assembly.

Could buy a parts trans and pull it from that, but I'm not sure what they go for. Last LS t56 I built for a guy on here was $400 and it just needed a rebuild kit and 2nd gear.

Must be the only one on earth that isn't gold plated (at least the owner didn't think so)

Lol thats the truth.
My trans guy quoted me about a grand including labor, but I'm not sure that included a 26 spline input shaft.
He said a used counter shaft was only like $250?

I just want it off my bench.
I've seen some non-exploded cores go around $400. I don't really have a reason to keep it, so any reasonable offer will take it.

How about I just do you a favor and pick it up for scrap aluminum for ya. Getting some crappy unreliable Ford crap off the road would be a service for humanity.

How many times do I have to tell people that T56's suck. 3rg gear is when the go boom, you prob ripped the cluster like ever one. Your "build" t56 will do the same unless you got a top of the line G-Force T56 that's the only ones that will last longer. a Tr6060 stock would have set you back the same or less if you shopped around with some shops and dealer hookups.

sometimes you just get unlucky and something breaks. but the t56 is a legendary workhorse. No other manual tranny has been used in so many high torque applications... cobra's, vipers and all GM's ls vehicles.

i don't find it unreasonable to have to beef it up when your making 2 to 3 times the power over stock.

I like mine! Save having to tear it down to get rid of a vibration, but it did have 100k+ on it before I bought it.

If you spray lube the headset gears it will last a lot longer over 700whp

I've got $1000 in a brand new D&D Built Trans that they claim to be good for 800whp. How far will $1000 get me on a different one?

Lethal makes a Magnum style T56 they rate at over 1000whp but its $5,000.

The magnum would be based off a 6060. Most of the t56 rebuilds only fix or get you better shifting and no more torque capacity. Stock gears are stock gears and even the aftermarket gears break quite often. A 6060 has wider helical gears, larger bearings/shafts to handle more load and a different shifting componets, but I've seen a few of those transmissions have issues shifting also.

I don't want this trans anymore. That's way to much money to fix...

You guys are starting to make me feel pretty fortunate about how reliable my T56 has been.

When/if mine goes, it will likely just result in a th400 or something along those lines in its place. Work smarter, not harder.

I was going to say the same thing if I have any more issues.
A lot of guys are recommending 4L80Es I think?

4l80 is the ticket if you want a strong street/strip trans with OD.

Lots of people beef up the 4r70w which seems to work pretty well. I honestly don't know that I've seen a 4l80 swap. That'd be interesting.
