I noticed in a couple videos online, where a car pre-stages, and theres a guy standing behind it that pushes, pulls, switches, does something on the rear of the car. just curious what this would be for? battery kill switch to make it run on just the alternator? datalog? You can kind of see it in this video at 2:45.

1. why not just let the driver toggle it
2. why do they always wait until the last second to toggle it like their life depends on it. any modern memory card can record hours worth of log data. i start recording as soon i get called from the staging lanes. And they have to wait for their pit guys to shut the log off

2. why do they always wait until the last second to toggle it like their life depends on it. any modern memory card can record hours worth of log data. i start recording as soon i get called from the staging lanes. And they have to wait for their pit guys to shut the log off

They do it so the log is easier to find and dont have to clip it down into a shorter time frame, alot of these cars shut down right at the strip so the log will stop as soon as power is cut off. Alot of nitrous cars start recording when the trans brake button is pressed but for turbo cars they usually want to start logging before that so they can see boost/rpm/brake pressure stuff like that while spooling in pre-stage lights.

Basically they are eliminating the time it takes to edit all these logs during a day of racing, since they should all be saved with changes noted and all that business. The reason the driver doesnt do it is pure mistake proofing, the driver needs as little to worry about as possible so his rythm doesnt get messed up. 1 mistake or forgotten switch could potentially cost thousands of dollars in a lost round. Watch alot of the nitrous cars they have crew members open the bottles, purge it, arm it and everything. just last year I have forgotten to arm my nitrous system 2 or 3 times and thank god they were qualifying passes

Very good Scott. We actually have 2 switches, one in the back of the car just like they do in the video and we also have one in the car that I can reach before going into the staging beams in case I don't have someone with me to toggle it on from the rear. My data logger will record for up to 40 seconds and is throttle position activated. It also adjustable at the moment it is set to record for 15 secs and will store the log for up to 30 mins after the car is cycled off. In the old DSM days we had to worry about having the lappy turning into death object in the car that isnt the case anymore :)

this is what i have. unlimited logging if you have your laptop . If you only have the handheld, about 2000 hours of data can be recorded on a single 2GB SD card.

of course i realize you wouldn't want to sift through a huge log . however I do go for 30 minute drives logging and its pretty easy to navigate through that size log

That makes the most sense.

He told me that car made something like 1800whp with slicks on the dyno. He also said he preferred a street car to something like that because you can't actually drive it anywhere. lol

Yeah thats fine for street cars just doing engine tuning with all this time on your hands. Once you start limiting the amount of time you have between runs you find creative ways to save time and make everything more consistant.

On a seperate note those guys typically are looking ALOT more info than just engine related stuff.. Data logging is most beneficial to CONTROL power not to create more power

A buddy I use to work with runs with the Ozark Super Shifters and he showed me his datalogger. Its amazing what all they keep track of and how he used all the information to make the smallest changes.

Pretty amazing stuff.
