View Full Version : Does anyone have a metal lathe / lots of free time on their hands?

I have an experiment that I want to try.
The long and short of it is I need to make hub for a wheel that I can't buy anywhere. It would essentially be turning the 5 lug portion off, and welding on a piece of circular plate steel (~3/8 - 1/2") and drilling it for a dual pattern (4 and 5 lug)
Not sure if this is really feasible, but I'd be willing to pay for the work done.
Anyone?
I have a hookup to a waterjet, and could get the flange portions done cheaply and quickly, but I don't have a lathe, or know of anyone who would be interested in taking this on....

why not just use 4 to 5 lug adapters?

Scott does have an old school metal lathe. He doesn't have a lot of time on his hands, but for some money he will make some.

1. I'm going from a 5 to a 4
2. Because I don't have the room, and I'm not buying a different set of wheels. That would completely defeat the purpose.
I'm almost thinking that I could add material (weld) to one of the scallops where the lug would sit, and then drill it, without all the complex machining.
I don't know, however, how that would affect balance. The last thing I need is a vibration.

Your best bet is to have custom hubs machined. Last thing you want holding your wheel on is something that "should work".

Yeah, I wish there was a better option, but I haven't found one yet. I'm going to do some experimenting with some of the other 5 lug hubs I have.....
any ideas would be appreciated!
