I think late August would be good. The guys that are still in school will be able to make it right before college fires back up. Its also a time-frame where most will have the kinks worked out of their cars and haven't had a whole season yet to break them too badly. :D
My only constraints are my new job I'm starting in March and what funds are going to be like then getting something done with my car. Also, I’m taking the Cobalt up to Road America one of those weekends so it’ll depend on when Corvette Weekend is this year.

We should do another event in the spring. Also, my vote would be august / september.

i personally think we should have the Automatic class guys make the automatic rules, and then leave the manual rules the way they are. That way, ed or fifdy could take charge or something. just a suggestion....

A get together has been discussed but never followed through with. when the weather starts warning up i think we should try to Hewett something going as there is definitely interest. A little off topic for the shootout though

Agreed, might be a little off topic, but true. I think a Aug/Sept date would be better. A date in spring would be nice or a meet in the spring might work too.

Aug/Sept would be great. More preferably August for the warmer weather and like mentioned during a break for us tards in school would be nice. Also it'd be nice having good enough weather for some of us to bring our bikes - even though theres nothing for bikes in the shootout it'd be nice to have a reason to come to the track and maybe make a few passes in the test&tune portion.

Speaking of get togethers. Every weekend Im out with a few guys from this site. I guess I should just start posting somewhere what we're doing, and if even a couple guys can make it, we would have the biggest meet we've had for a while. Aside from the actual shoot out, the biggest group of guys we had together 2012 was probably advance auto car show when somehow a bunch of us met up there without even talking about it. myself, kitch, jesse, eric, a couple other bike guys and I think Kitch's future car was there that night too (the turbo one). Thats only 5..I guess the Tama/Toledo car show had more of us there, and even some racing!

2. like last year with $25-$35 entry fee and payouts and lots of trophies

The only problem is that most of the people coming out will be manual from last years turn out. I wasn't there for the first one but it seems there's a huge line in the sand against auto to manual cars. I'll admit it that with the manuals it really limits the times unless you have a fully caged out drag car. That being said I would love to see more people come out this year and even have a possible auto class or 10.5 to race along side the manuals hell I might even jump into that pool ( know I'd loose but meh), hey there's even a chance I could win again on someone redlighting like last time *cough* ed *cough* lol.

Any way to figure out getting a rental :) I know there was talk about it last year, but it's just money right. It would suck for the fast cars (ie 10.5 guys) to have to run with street tire cars at a paid rental since they degrade the track so much.
JacobS
03-27-2013, 07:39 PM
it will also scare people away those that dont want to race against 10.5 cars. im not complaining, i probably wont be able to make it anyway to do my proposed work schedule. but high entry fees and 8 sec cars will just weed out the slower cars, therefore leaving us with the same amount of cars and an event that isnt growing. just my .02, take it for what its worth

are we talking about running the actual 10.5 class, or have the 10.5 cars run in the auto class? if you run an actual 10.5 class i dont see a problem with it, but if you want them to run in the auto class i could forsee it causing problems with the slower guys not wanting to run against 8 second cars. it would just be kind of stupid to run a 12 second car vs an 8 second car.

Yea, the 10.5/radial guys, auto class and manual class. Only problem i see is that will there be enough time to run everything and have the normal test and tune go on? That and the track prep might not be good enough on that type of day for the 10.5/radial guys. Nothing worse than them dragging the cars out to slip slide away down the track.

Thats the challenge of racing a small tire car in the first place, we all race on the same track so its all fair anyway right?? Depending on when the rental is and payout we all know there is plenty of cars within driving distance to enter a headsup race without perfect track prep. KOTS and Total Meltdown events bring tons of cars and spectators. All depends on how serious you are about this small tire heads up street car stuff, because we can all just be honest here and admit the fact IF there is a event like this and you want to make it work the majority of the cars WILL NOT come from this area. I could see Allgo, Torrey, skipstairs, Seelman maybe, myself, and then guys from else where.
Dont know what you guys are thinking but Im envisioning more of a street race style here as opposed to a 10.5 event. No qualifying, maybe a hour for test hits, then allow callouts for 1st round if they get accepted and draw names from there on out. It will take some time and likely run into the night. If you put $$ down they will come, I know QCAA at cordova had a good amount of guys planning on racing that werent from the area.

Im down for trying whatever. I can handle the manual class. I would like someone to step up and handle all aspects of the auto class(es) , rules, entry fees, payouts/awards and gathering participants. I can help promote it and throw in a couple hundred into the pot.
I just emailed Dan for the cost for private track rental this year so we will see. QCAAF's quote for private rental at cordova was much cheaper than the cfr's quote. Tyler, are you going to prepay for the private track rental ?? That way I don't have to worry if only 12 people show up to race.

I think you guys have a pretty good thing going for the manual and auto cars for the forum and should stick with it. I propose a list of participants like you did last year and see what what we have. For instance $100.00 entry fee or discount prepay Looks like we have 5 guys that are interested if someone puts up 500.00 and we have people prepay well boys that's a 1000.00 race. When you start guaranteeing money people will come.

I like this idea as well run what you brung any limitations like you said before??? Tires?

I like this idea as well run what you brung any limitations like you said before??? Tires?
Tires is the big limiter, its basically universal rules for small tire stuff out there keeping out the tube chassis 4-linked door cars and dragsters. Id just saw Iowa 10.5 rules, and before anyone bitches take a look at the rules and notice they're basically non-existant. no weight limit. no bars. any power adder or number of them. any trans. any engine.
The question that usually raises debate is whether 1/8th or 1/4, I personally prefer the 1/8th just because it keeps speed down on marginal tracks.
Scott
03-28-2013, 10:50 AM
oh yeah I'd say 275 radial or 28x10.5 those tires are proven in testing to be more or less equal to each other

03-28-2013, 02:39 PM
I'll be running in the auto class this year. I'm not an extremely picky person. I like the idea of a 10.5 radial class something dot approved. If that was the case it wouldn't matter to me how fast the cars went. I wont win either way but at least there on some level an equalizer.

Maybee some of these dedicated forum followers you have should all toss in a $50 or $100 and help you out, instead of sitting on here yaking the gums about it...tell ya what get some of your boys to toss in...I put up the first $50.00...Im sure 500 or 1000 would come quick if everyone helped out, Or stick with the Dollar General trophys, that get tossed away. Sundays, June 16&29, and July 28. Works out to be about $50 per car if 35 cars . Last year we had 23 cars I believe. Probably 2-3x the amount of spectators, have them throw in some money.
We could ask for more time. No that does not include money for any payouts, $1700 is strictly the rental fee.

I just talked to Dan@cfr again today, they have a busy schedule and also lots of days they are closed at CFR to help with other big events at Cordova or other Special Events. They are not even open the entire 2nd half of August. And nothing works in September. He said Saturday July 27th , October 5th and October 19th are good days to guarantee we'll get all our passes in.
I have something going on the weekend of July 27th but could possibly skip. I'm voting for October 5th. I know last year's Oct 20th event was chilly but that was a below average day and we'd be a couple weeks earlier this year. Average high is 67 degrees in CF on Oct 5.

Whats their main limiting factor, does it have to be no faster than a 10 sec car and must be a stick? Why cant you guys go along the guidelines that you must have a auto and never ran quicker than 10?? otherwise you have a laundry list of rules that sucks for everyone Just keep it simple and fun thats what its about.

any car can be plated. if you want no rules, there is the Iowa Outlaw 10.5 class on the same day at CFR. If you don't want to run with low 8 second cars, I would suggest rules similar to the ones I made up last year. But all I hear is people complaining. complain how the rules are dumb or complain if they would have to run with too fast of cars, complain that I tailored the rules. how can i tailor the rules for a class i don't even race in?
Fifdy wouldn't even commit to the event until the day off. wins the trophy and $100 and then for the next year complains how dumb the race is. there was only 5 auto participants last year and I had to work hard to gather those people. i didn't seem to have anyone help gather participants. caleb auto won't be racing this year, logan's audi was just ran for the hell of it last year and he won't be running it again. i'm sure fifdy won't commit to it until last minute again.

Why cant you guys go along the guidelines that you must have a auto and never ran quicker than 10?? otherwise you have a laundry list of rules that sucks for everyone Just keep it simple and fun thats what its about.
reminds me about the complaints i had about the 10 second rule too. people saying it was just an index race or bracket race :) can't win
but i like to see everyone show up. hate to exclude anyone. and it is an open test and tune day so if someone won't step up and organize an auto race you can always run test and tune.

2 classes; 1 stick and 1 for auto. Same rules
1. Must be a member of this forum or DS and not sign up just to run this event. That ought to be pretty easy to figure out
2. Must be plated
3. Any tire (I know this caused a lot of issues last year. We're drag racing, not street racing. Let em run them if they own them.)
4. Stock style suspension
5. Must have at least 2 seats
Thoughts?

I still dont see whats to organize outside of the manual class.. have exactly the same rules as the manual just divide it between manual and auto. So when someone enters just ask them what they run and put them in that class. Why does the auto class have to have a seperate set of rules. I also dont see why everyone cant just be in one class anyway. Especially if there is a "no cars faster then 10.0 ET" rule. I say one class autos and manuals together and all issues are solved.

The manual class will stay the way it is. That's the way it started and has been for 3 of the 4 years. its simple and we are able to keep the rules basic for that class as long as it stays all manuals. lets be honest, autos have an advantage with drag racing both with ET and consistency.
the auto class is tough because you have a lot of serious drag auto cars as well as more modest street autos. The original goal was to make a class for more of a standard street car with an auto, hence all the rules. There are already many classes for the drag cars, 10.5 races and classes like Mike's small tire shootout.

I will do the same... I know that this year Matt switched to an auto, Andy is runnign an auto, Brandi will now have an auto , I have an auto... thats four of us that are out that were looking forward to the shootout...
well to make things easy. If you, matt, Andy (redrocket?) , brandi, fifdy, lt1dan will commit to participating in the auto class with last years rules. Id say that is good start and enough people to justify the race. andy smith from fort madison said he is coming with his mustang again. him and fifdy would've been a good race but his battery died last year.

I'll be there with whichever of my vehicles runs. If my truck and honda run I will enter in both classes and trailer the race car up. The division started initially because head to head racing with stick cars is a whole different game. A lot less efficient way of racing etc etc. But I think due to lack of time in the day having both classes run separately wouldn't work.
I like seeing all you clowns. You're fun people generally. No one is getting rich off of this. If you don't like racing, socializing, seeing goofy trophies or eating snack pack pudding then I guess you should probably not go debby downers!

I had no idea actually... and you should know I'm not really one to "stir the pot". I just hate all the "street cars" that get trailered everywhere. That new stupid ass show "Street Outlaws" or whatever renewed my hatred for it which inspired my post.
Trailer a car somehwere, pull it off for 2-3 minutes, put it back on the trailer and call it a "street car" BULLSHIIIT!! You can throw a formula/Nascar/Sprint car on the street for a few seconds too, doesn't make it a street car

To problem is that nobody from DM wants to drive all the way up there and then break with no trailer. Figure a way to make that work without being a PITA and it would probably work. Heck, pick 1 unbiased person on here and let them decide if it qualifies as a street car or not. I don't care.

I pretty much hate everyone equally, that kinda makes me unbiased. LOL ok, I don't hate anyone...
I get if people are driving hours to go, they'll want to have a trailer. Personally, when I think "street car", I think full (or damn close) interior, licensed/insured (so obviously, headlights, taillights, turn signals, etc...), street legal tires, and gets driven on a regular basis. If you can't drive it to the track and take it on a few hour cruise, its not a street car. Trailering home because you broke is completely different.

the basic goal of our shootout was to race cars that are actually driven on the street. its a small enough event that we pretty much know everyone who participates and with pre-registration everyone can see whose entering and not much b.s. can slip through. most people drive anyway. casey martin drove from des moines one year and won. i drove last year and won. fifdy drove and won, etc.
i understand trailering for the breakage risk. hauling tires, tools etc. some people have race gas for the track and don't want to waste it driving etc etc.

there is no cage rules on the manual side. auto class allows up to a 12 point cage. Cages for 8.50 and quicker are against the rules and the class wasn't really designed for cars that quick. The rules were originally copied from KOTS
these are the types of cages not allowed

no offense but your car is more dangerous with the bird cage on the street. i know you will probably pad it up real good if you plan on driving on the street without a helmet. even padded, I'm not sure how safe it would be without a helmet.
if your car is capable of low 8's then this really the class for you. the original goal of the class is 10-12 second cars. its no secret that the rules were picked to purposely weed out cars that were faster. 99% of cars with a 25.x cage are not going to be running 10-12 second ET's so its a perfect rule to have for the class. I'm not hating on safety or 8 second cars. Just trying to make a race for that group of cars.
I did lift the 10.0 index rule this year so its even more important to have a strong set of rules to create a natural group 10-12 second cars.

been allot of debates on funny car cages on the street... yet to see someone prove they are more dangerous. But most important point to what your saying a helmet would be worn while i raced on a track so it would in fact be safer for your race! i just dont get it i guess make an index class or a bracket or.... let anyone race with a street legal registered tagged insured streetcar.

most likely your head will go through the side window and break it, or hopefully your seat belt will slow you down and/or restrain you from hitting the steering wheel/dash. but the bars surrounding your head in your mustang are much closer and have zero give.
put some roll bar padding on a metal baseball bat and have someone hit you on the head with it and let me know how it feels :)

the only valid point you made was they are found more often in drag cars than street cars. everything else is dependent on the type of crash and events that occur in the crash period. ive been volunteer and a firefighter as a profession.. safe devices can always increase and decrease the likely hood of injury in a crash. there have been crashes a occupant would have survived had they not been buckled up! does that mean your better off no using seat belts? of course not!!! now im not trying to say a halo makes you safer because i dont think it does but the you will die if you hit a pot hole approach your taking against it is over the top.
and as far as the dart goes you must have more faith in a lap belt than i do! but im gunna drive it anyway cuz im crazy like that

I'm a completely outside and unbiased point of view as I have no intentions of participating. You guys use the term "street car" pretty losely as it is already, IMO... I don't see why it matters what kind of cage someone has in there car. I seen a road race car with a crazy cage that would be lucky to run 11's but it stiffens the otherwise weak structure of the car which is why he did it. I could be wrong here but I believe nitrous is NOT legal to have hooked up on the street, therefore any car running nitrous would no longer be "street legal" as soon as they hook up the bottle. (okay, the nitrous comment was just to be a dick...)
Plus, I don't have an LS/T-56 so I don't think I'd qualify anyway...? ;-)

Why not let this be a street car event as defined by it's organizer? If that means you are excluded then I'm sorry, you obviously have a very built car that I'm sure can compete in many other events.

it boils down to integrity and honesty, if you really want to sneak an 8 second car into a class designed for cars a few seconds slower then ultimately i can't stop you. there has always been classes already available for the faster guys.

Exactly what I was thinking. Who is gonna bring their street car to an event and try to race some 10.5 cars? It would be pointless.

What exactly are you implying by that? Are you referring to a class car or a 10.5 car? Because majority of stock suspension street cars sit on a 10.5 inch tire these days just want you to clear that up.
