View Full Version : Calling anybody with a WRX or EVO

Hey guys, really odd request here. But, I am thinking of consolidating a few of my cars into a nice DD for next year. After looking and reading I think I want a WRX wagon with a manual, or a EVO 8 or 9. I can't find one in the damn state of Iowa close enough to test drive to see which one I like better. So if anybody has a WRX with a 2.0 or a 2.5 turbo engine, if you would be willing to give me a ride and tell me what you think of the car, I'd throw you a couple bucks. Same goes for an EVO.

you can drive my 2005 subaru legacy gt 2.5 turbo. 100% stock. if you're ever in the cr/ic area . its a good daily. I think its cams/turbo/intake mani , maybe heads are a bit tamed down from the sti. probably has more low end torque though.

pretty sure the evo's are going to have stiffer suspension / less comfort

Only driven an Evo.

Fell in love with it. Perfect car.

EVO has way more power potential, but the 2.5 subi stuff has better midrange power. EVO's don't come with cruise control. For a driver I'd go with a Legacy GT over the others any day and it comes in wagon form. The subi 2.5l longblocks are all the same I think, just the turbo/intake stuff is smaller than say a STI, but those guys sell the stock stuff cheap if you wanted a budgit upgrade.

I'm not really looking to go fast, I just want something with enough pep to make me happy and become drift king in the winter. Plus it's got to haul my great dane from time to time, groceries, ect..

I drove an 05 Legacy GT wagon with an auto about 6 months ago. Pep was ok but the car wasn't my cup of tea, felt like something my mom would drive ( no offense!)

Longevity actually seemed pretty good on both the Evo's and WRX's. WRX wagons are a bunch cheaper and easier to find unmodded. I know I'm going to have to go at least a few hundred miles away to something unmodded with decent miles for a decent price.

Legacy wagons are ugly. Wrx wagons look a lot better

Some of the forester turbo look decent and are 2.5

If more amenities, better interior, better style = moms car then so be it. I could never drive a EVO or WRX anymore as people would think I'm a tOOner and I couldn't live with that:) EVO's are badass as far as performance, but it's quite a big pile of plastic (even more than a vette ;)) I'd say get a S4 if you had the patience to get it all sorted and I say that knowing most will not be unless you pay for it.

I would gladly give you a ride in my car but it doesn't really drive much like a stock evo. There is a large subi support group in the area with a wide range of cars. I would look at evo VIIIs over IXs just because there are fewer things like mivec and ACD.

I'd still take a ride! :)

My mom has usually had the nicer car, I'm used to more of a base simple car. Honestly I've only owned one vehicle newer than a 93 and sold it with in 6 months because it had no personality/character and I didn't dig the payments. That's why I want to make sure I can deal with a newer car again and not get bored within a year. If they were reliable I'd love a 1G 6 bolt GSX. But since I don't have two cars that can be driven daily anymore, I have to have one that's reliable. If you guys have any more ideas on vehicles in the 12-18k price range, I'm open to ideas. It has to be able to fit my great dane, be good in the winter, decent MPG and fun to drive.

Maybe a mazda speed6? I've always thought they looked nice and look like a great daily driver. Turbo, 6speed, all-wheel-drive. Never really driven or been in one though.

Well you've been in our Mazdaspeed 3. With a few minor upgrades it is a fun car and with $600 in winter wheels and tires it gets around great.

That is what I'll be driving daily once we buy her something a little bigger for the family. New shortshifter, a tune and maybe some more aggressive summer tires and I'll be set. ..Until that voice in the back of my mind tells me thats not good enough then I'll probably buy more parts for it and ruin the thing. I tend to do that.

If I get a chance, I'll give this thing a test drive this week.

Just trying to find what I like and what I don't. I know the 6 is a bigger car, not sure if I'll be a fan, only one way to find out!

sounds like the legacy gt turbo awd. im no expert with the mazdaspeed6 but i'd guess the subaru motor and awd system is better and the aftermarket support for suby is better. i've heard the mazda direct injection is tough to upgrade . but if your not going to mod it, might not matter

The turbo on the speed6 is also not very good. Lots of people are having to replace them. I vote subaru for the fact that its reliable, comfortable, and the aftermarket support is great if you ever need to replace anything, even non performance parts

Not to mention you're essentially driving a Ford Fusion wannabe

Those are pretty confined as far as how far you can go before you hit the limit. i have read they cant go much over 300-350 hp before needing the internals built up.

I've driven regular 6's and wasn't really a fan, but it's close enough I might as well check it off the list.

The more I look at the bug eye suby's the more I like them. I'm kind of weird, bug eye wagon is weird, makes sense!

The Mazdaspeed 6's are a badass car, just limited.

Everything on them is made of gold though. When I was doing insurance, a damn headlight harness is $1600.

Chris, You should take my new dd for a drive. Now that I have my winter tires on it, it gets around quite well. Plus you could pick one up for about half of what a speed6 costs.

I will have to wait til spring when I get my car back out.

I'd vote Evo8 all the way. You can pick them up for pretty cheap now and if you look and are careful you can find ones that haven't been molested by some teenager. They are fantastic cars all around and as long as you don't get to crazy they are rock solid reliable. I had all kinds of shit done to mine making around 450hp/400tq and I never had to worry about anything breaking and it was a BLAST to drive. I miss it a lot, but the only reason I can cope is I have an Evo X now...

What do you think about the bigger Evo X compared to the 8 or 9?

TbTalon94
01-01-2013, 12:02 PM
The EvoX doesn't feel any bigger to me. Just much different looking. It's not as "raw" as an Evo8/9. A bit more refined and luxurious but still the same ol' Evo feel. It's the perfect compromise of a fun car that's still comfortable.

Chris I picked up an 05 Srt-4.

Out of the options you have currently stated I think the 8-9 evo would be the most fun for a dd.

I saw this in town the other day at dj:

He also had a rally blue 07 wrx for I beleive 15k with 100k miles. Go drives those around, see if you like it.
