Does anyone have any experience with a Ford Taurus X (http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/2008-ford-taurus-x-limited-short-take-road-test)? Ran across one while car shopping for a small suv and it looks interesting in a family-mobile sort of way. I've never heard of them so if anyone knows anything either way let me know.

Was called a Freestyle before they changed the name. People seem to like them, they have a CVT trans if you are ok with that. I like them. Looking to get one myself if I ever have any money. Has a V6 with more power than Sparkles tuned port 3rd gen bird.

They actually switched to a 6 speed auto in 2008 which is what I'm looking at. Have you heard anything bad about the AWD system in them? Don't want to buy something that's going to shit out on me in a year.

Never heard anything bad about the AWD, just the CVT trans but I guess you said they switched that out. I like the FWD for gas mileage but I don't have to deal with snow either... LS engine swap that biatch!

yes , trailblazer ss get bad mpg's.
but you know the trailblazer/envoy with the 5.3 liter version has the 3.42 rear (instead of the ss 4.10) and the 5.3 has displacement on demand and actually gets about 19-20mpg highway. and if you get the 2wd version that helps keep it light and reliable and better mpg's. and those 5.3's are strong when boosted ;) . also can tow over 6,000 lbs iirc
i'm on the lookout for one if anyone knows of one. 5.3 and rwd are hard to find

Look up DOD and find lots of problems on it. Might be fine for low speed trucking, but they have problems with lifters craping out. Even the revised stuff is a little iffy. Just not something I'd want. I would remove the DOD asap if I bought one. They also sound like poop in 4 cylinder mode.

Didn't know the 5.3 was an option in the Trailblazers. I wish we could get away with another small car but it's unreal how much stuff we HAVE to take along (according to the wife at least) when we go to the grandparents, etc. Can't fit it all in her G6. We're going to check it out tonight I think. They have an AWD and a FWD one so we'll see what happens.

Brought it home with us until Saturday to test it out. Overall we both really like what it has to offer. It has enough power to get up and go on the highway without much effort. Decent amount of space in the back with all three rows up and the third row folds down flat. Has some minor issues though. TPMS light came on when we left, oil change light is on even though they said it was done 1000 miles ago, drivers side heated seat doesn't work, and there is at least one spot I found last night where the paint is bubbling. I'm still up in the air if I want to pick this particular one up though. The small problems plus it has 117xxx miles on it make me a little weary.

Good bit of miles for a new model with an unfamiliar engine/trans and awd system. Maybe its reliable, but its not really tried and true. Heated seat is pretty minor..as most cars dont have them anyway. Drive it to ATS or a Ford dealer ship for them to hook up a good diagnostic machine and check everything.
my 5.0 mountaineer refuses to die. But it gets 8mpg.

That's my biggest worry. The other things are just minor inconveniences that add to my paranoia that it's going to die if I buy it.
I hate buying cars that I have to depend on. Fun cars don't matter if they stop running for awhile.

I can't haul a baby around on a Harley...what are you thinking. :hitwithrock:
They have another that is "Ceritfied Pre-owned". Half the miles and whats left of the original 7 year, 100,000 mile warranty. It's 50% more expensive though. I'm blown away at how expensive "nice" used cars are now. I wish I could stick to my $2000 beaters.
Also, there was a TSB put out for the drivers side heated seat. I guess it's about a $50-75 fix if you do it yourself.

Steer clear of that one, many nicer ones out there to buy. Find a nice private owner one somewhere. As for the AWD being an issue that car is based on the Volvo S80 chassis, pretty sure the AWD is just fine... Also that v6 has been around forever in the Taurus, Ford 500, etc...

Yeah I've been looking for deals on them all day today. This one should be priced more around $7-8000 based on what I've seen. Oh well, at least I'm not paying for gas today.

I don't mind how the Flex looks and Ecoboost would be sweet.
Anyways, we ended up going up North to Iowa Falls and buying a Taurus X yesterday. It's Oxford White (sounds fancier than just white), FWD and a lot less mile than the other one. The wife is happy and I get to upgrade from the Focus to her G6 so it's a win all around.

Those Taurus X's were better than the Freestyle because they had the 3.5 not the weak 3.0. Not a bad kid hauler though, we almost got one until my wife went PT Crazy...
