Hey all. Figured I would join the forum in hopes to meet some more Des Moines guys. I have a 2001 Z28 that I just got running a couple of months ago. Bought it about a year ago with the LS1 blown and a good T56. For now it's just a stock bottom end LQ4 with 76mm turbo running through a 4L80e transmission. I have ran into a few guys from the forum that were real cool.

Here's my half-assed build thread if anyone is interested. Will be making some changes over the winter even though it's been running for only a couple months.

Look forward to meeting some new people.

The car seems to hold its own from what i have seen of it. Good addition to what little street scene Des Moines has left.

Welcome! Red fbody power! Haha

I think I met you at Rodney Pierce's house one time. It was a few years ago though.

This is my fourth 4th Gen that has been red, or a variation of red.

95 Z28 - Medium Patriot Red Metallic
99 Z28 - Red
00 SS - Red
01 Z28 - Red

I can't seem to get away from red. Hell, my 02 Avalanche is red too. I don't know what it is.

welcome! very nice car

Thank you!

Nice car man, welcome to the site.

Hopefully I'll curve my alcoholism a bit next season and be out/about more.

Engine bay/car looks clean. That newer turbonetics turbo should wake it up on the top end nice. I'd run as much downpipe as you can fit though. Ryan (site owner) sells all the turbo stuff (precision, turbonetics, tial, couplers, injectors, etc, etc) so give him a ring for the best pricing.

Thanks Slow Ride, I will do that when the time comes. Figure a 7875 would get me to where I want to be eventually.

Hey Andy, welcome to the board.

I ran into this thing at random taking the long way home from work a couple weeks ago. I can attest, it is fast. I hope we can arrange a couple track visits next year!

I will definitely be up for some track outings next year.

Yep it would be perfectly fucked up. Carry on.

Even I don't know about cutting up that SVO. I'd port the head, add a cam and a sweet spooling midsize turbo and have fun in it even if it doesn't sound right. Now if the GT's ment for corners I can see droping some weight off the nose :) Don't take much money to make a strong NA aluminum ls. (disclamer, I don't expect Scott to go along with this ha)

No track times yet, but after running a couple Cobra guys on here I somewhat have an idea of what it "should" do with traction. The tune is still somewhat conservative and isn't fully finished. Should have that wrapped up here soon if the weather stays decent. I would like to get it on the dyno as well to see if the power is dropping off up top with the small exhaust side on this cheap turbo. Right now it's shifting a touch below 6,000 RPM and feels strong all the way there, but we are going to try to push 18-20 lbs on it and I don't think the turbo will like that at all, ha. We will see.

what turbo is it?

strong motor but thats a lot of boost. you trying to max out the stock block or just not care about it if it blows?

Ah my ebay turbo is running 22psi ;) you should be good lol. Car looks and sounds good! I've decided to keep my car so if we get a nice weekend and you want to have a "high speed cruise" i wont wussy out this time.

It's an on3 76mm eBay special. If the motor goes, it goes. Only thing I am worried about is bending the stock rods and possibly killing some ringlands. Some people bend them in the 600 rwhp range, while others go a lot higher without issues. If I had the upgraded pistons and rods I wouldn't be as concerned, but mine is an 03. If I hurt this motor I will simply pick up a junk yard 5.3 on the cheap, slap that in, and let it eat while I start saving up to forge 6.0L.

The guy tuning the car does a lot of junk yard 5.3/6.0 combos on E85. He tuned this guys cars...

1st gen rx7 - junkyard 5.3 w/ 76mm - 8.65 at 167.9, fastest stock shortblock ls
1985 Ford LTD "4 door hooptie DD" - junkyard 5.3/76mm - 9.79 at 144.6 on 235 drag radials and thru 6 mufflers

They are from the Kansas City area and he got my tune damn near spot on through email. When my buddies car gets done (2000 SS, 402, GT88, on E85) he is coming up here to finish up my tune and dial in my buddies car. I am anxious to see what mine does once it's fully tuned on higher boost.

The less back pressure the easier it will be on the engine. E85 or race gas will help this out a lot though. I think those on3's are a 76mm with something like a 68mm exhaust wheel/.90 something t4 exhaust housing. Just keep sneaking up on it.

thats cool, as long as your prepared to lose the block. its always fun to see how much power they can make stock. for every success story over 600whp there is probably a fail story. some people don't like to brag about their failures.

"thewhitenotch" on this forum blew up his stock 5.3 iron http://iowaautoforums.com/showthread.php?13996-New-from-quad-cities

I was following 98Z28CobraKiller's stock block adventures a year or two ago on ls1tech and he ended up breaking a rod and totaled his lq9 block at 700whp . didn't make it through one season...but most of the season. lq9 even has the slightly beefier rods than your lq4 . he was pretty confident in his tuning.

It's actually a 65mm with a .96 ar. Too small for my LQ4 no doubt and I bet the backpressure is pretty high.
