Well hopefully this will jump start Ed C's build thread since he hasn't posted one yet.

02 zo6 . Started with a forged ls6 stroked to 383 making around 500whp NA. 6 speed. c6 drivetrain. I'll let him fill in the details.

He's got it torn apart now to fab up a custom twin turbonetics journal bearing setup. He ordered 62mm compressor wheels, 65mm turbine wheels. Small b compressor covers for space reasons. I think Ed said another similar setup has made over 1000whp . He's planning on keeping ac and power steering. Hoping he'll make it into the manual shootout next year.

I picked up some coated parts for him from Cool Concepts since I live a lot closer and snapped some pics. Using oem gm manifolds (from cts-v i think) . he cut into the new turbine housings to cram in some wastegate mounts into the tight area

I hooked him up with Tial wastegates and bov's.

I also setup an account with Treadstone so I could get the intercooler he wanted. I had to do a buy in so also picked an intercooler up for the rx7 while I was at it as well as a bunch of other mandrel bends and other fab parts. Here is what Ed's intercooler looks like.....

Treadstone Intercooler features superb quality highly efficient bar and plate construction. Our quality cast end tanks ensure evenly distributed airflow and low-pressure drop. Our intercoolers are now pressure checked to 150psi and come with a 1-year warranty against manufacture defect. This intercooler was used in various twin turbo applications such as, Corvette, Viper, and Camaro....Able to support upwards of 1300HP.

Introducing the newly design TRTTC9 Intercooler. This intercooler was manufactured for those who want a more efficient and longer tube length intercooler to cool high boosted air down even more than our TRV25 series intercoolers. Features a longer 9" tube length than its predecessor, and is perfect for high boost applications upwards of 1300 HP.
TRTTC9
Core Size, 25" X 9" X 3.5"
1-3" outlet and 2-2.5" inlets
Outlet is angled 15 degrees
1950 CFM flow rate
1300 HP efficient
2psi pressure drop at 1950cfm

retails for $480 which is pretty cheap for a brand name one. opted for this vs the china ones on ebay.

Thank god the coating covers up some of my poopy looking mig welding on the manifolds :) It's strong, but not super attractive. 2 bolt flanges bolted to the manifolds, sch 40 pipe making up the bends and the flanges are then welded to the manifolds also. They are some heavy chunks. None of this stuff is in sight haha, but all the exhaust/intake piping will be tig.

Just to clear this up I said people can/have made this kind of power with turbos of this size, NOT that I will :) This is really a low buck setup and I'd like to have some better heads and pistons to really push it hard. I sold off all my NA stuff which help fund this thing. The only extra expences are getting all the fuel lines, pumps, injectors, rails, etc. That crap really adds up. NA stuff is so easy to do that I still used a stock fuel pump, lines, no extra gauges, etc.

Shit guys, my car is really just a bunch of cheap junk put together well;) The coating on the manifolds cost more than the manifolds/material ha. I'm thinking I might be limited by a few drivetrain bits to really make some steam. I really need to upgrade the driveshaft at some point, but didn't feel like dumping $1k into something that was working fine. My old 383 uses Mahle powerpak pistons and they are not a severe duty piston/ring combo, but the gaps were set up with a little nitrous in mind so they should be good. They are better than stock though and guys are getting away with a lot on those. The rods are compstar and eagle crank (got it before callies even made a compstar crank). The shortblock has 17k miles on it or so now. I might even consider a iron block down the road. My old heads are living in a RX7 somewhere so I ended up porting a set of 317's to drop the compression to ~10.0:1 as the old heads/block combo was 11.8:1. I also downgraded to a ls6 intake and stock throttle body as they take boost much better than a fast 90 like I was using.

I've switched to c6z rear/t56 so as long as it's all in good working order (used stuff) I should be good. t56's can be a problem at this power level, but it has all the factory cooling pumps and I relocated the oil spray to hit the headset gears in front of the trans. I'm running a Mcleod RXT clutch also. Lots of changes all at once so Im sure something will give me fits, but it should be at least started early this spring. Getting the turbos mounted up was the hard part I think.

I'm not trying to compare my car to anyone's stuff. I just wanted something that was somewhat quiet, drove smooth and could really shit on my old NA setup.

It's like a APS kit with larger turbos. I can also seperate all the componets turbos/downpipes/wastgates one by one. This is nice for service as you can change the clutch without removing the turbos like you would have to with a aps kit. I will have full 3" dual exhaust from the turbos and the inlets will sit in the bumper with large filters.

slow ride
12-26-2012, 05:02 PM
It will use a turbowerx EXA scavenge pump with -10 lines. I hope to have good results as it's one of the best pumps for this and a lot of the APS turbo kit guys use this pump since it's a lot better than the factory APS pump.

I'm working on mounting the turbos now and fitting up oil feed lines, drains, etc. I added a lot of heat wrap, sleeves, barrier in the turbo/manifold area.

Deimos
12-26-2012, 08:51 PM
The oil lines is the last thing. I think I read a 6 feed with a 10 return. Its one of them things I will call the manufacturer when it becomes time to tackle it. Pics of the wrap job???

I didn't really port the flange, just removed the upper thread material from the fitting. I just wanted it to drain as good as possible bening it's a scavenge setup. It only took a few minutes to port them. I notched the flanges with a hacksaw and sanding disk. Not quite a cnc mill, but it will do :)

Getting close to priming the oiling system, fuel system, etc. I'll just have the exhaust/preIC boost pipes to finish after all that stuff for the big ticket things. Mcleod RXT clutch, stock 02' torque tube (12mm bolts so it's a little better), C6z rear diff and t56 (both have cooling) with c6 subframe. The C6z diff has a larger case/gear set, cooling pumps/coolers, 30 spline one piece main shaft, etc. Everything will hold depending on the abuse, but for upgrades I'd do 500m diff output shafts, DSS driveshaft/couplers or carbon fiber shaft and a 6060 trans in that order. I could build the t56 in it, but it really won't help power holding capacity as the gears become the weak link after 800whp or so. All this stuff should be fine on pump gas, but might get a little iffy later down the road.

J/K I've got a lot done, but documentation sucks. I'm going to get some pictures together, but christ it takes a full night to get everything hosted, etc. I'll have some pictures of the intercooler also, but it's just like the TTIX type kit. I welded two brackets on the main frame rails and used the treadstone intercooler brackets attach those points. I had to tilt the radiator a little bit as I used 3.5" upper IC pipe. I also have the downpipes just about done. Talk about a cluster f getting everything to fit nice under the car where the cats once lived. Fuel lines/rails, oil scavenge pump/lines, IC/upper pipe, etc. are done. I need to pull the pumps as I'm having a problem with the 255 not building pressure, but the 400 does. Lots to do on something like this and my class this term is a little more involved so that sucks.

Car might actually be quick then. I just hope this drivetrain is in good working order since I bought it used and the engine runs well with my heads, etc. I don't need to be gutting the car again this year.

And yes this years winter is just not going away up here. At least it makes me feel better about not being quite finished yet.

Finally some pictures. Been a long road with lots of hold ups, but I was able to tool around in the car the other day. Feels great, still lots of little things to do, but the good news is the rxt clutch/trans/rear feel great, nothing leaks and turbo response is excellent. Damn things spools right now, but I need some gauges/data to make sure its safe to push it hard.

Quick overflashed shot of the 3" exhaust fitting around the c6z drivetrain/coolers. F'n sucked to mod my welded big 3 exhaust to fit around this junk. Tips were good before tig welding, but the drivers side got messed up somehow and needs some work. Nothing worse than getting these things looking perfect. Exhaust is almost too quiet with a little boom/drone in the mid teens rpm wise. Should be easy to live with though.

The inlets were/are a pain. I still need to dent in the pipes a little since I run such large tires up front. I might switch wheels/tires out in the future, but you can still drive it around like this. You can see the crazy pie cutting I did in a few pictures due to lack of bends/space. I need to tweak the drivers side pipe up a little as its rubs the spring now that its on the ground. Lots of time and fun on these guys.

I highly doubt it will be race ready, but plan to bring it down (bumperless and all). I have the wideband in, but need the other gauges and I am making a mount for that so it takes time. Tons of little crap to do, but I'm in no rush (can you tell?????) and want things right before throwing a bunch of boost at it. It's just running off the gates right now with 7# springs, but I plan for a controller this winter to do boost by gear. The car really wants to take off from the few short pulls I did to build a few lbs checking spool. Car is soooo easy to drive now and the low end off idle is great with the smaller cam and the AC is still on the factory charge :)

Put a few more mile on this thing, but needed to tweak the inlet pipes and boost pipes for more clearance. The leaf spring smacked the drivers pipe and bent the rear bracket so I ended up cutting it in a few spots and making more room. Such a pain, but it is much better like the passengers side now. I also had to dent in the inlets by the tires a little for more turning clearance like the TTIX kits do. If I had run the pipes in a higher arch it would clear the tire more, but also make it more of a pain to get to the filter. It should work fine though.

Same here man. I'm sure I'll need some practice to get my manual mojo back ;) I think I will be doing some sort of drag setup if I want to compete with the others.

Thanks guys, I hate to say this and you know how the old saying goes, but it has more in it LOL. On the last run the boost was dropping (19-18 up top) and if I keep that up with pressure on the top of the gate it will help a lot for peak power. I was just using my temporary manual boost controller at the time. That and run a few more pounds total up 21-22 psi and in good weather it could break 1050-1100, but due to the clutch I won't be trying that till it needs replacement.

I might have a new exhaust idea to use for mufflers as I can't believe these mufflers didn't hurt power more. Probably a few HP to be had with the exhaust change, but I'm in no rush. This thing is so damn quiet except for some drone on the highway 1300-1600 rpm. I want to hear the turbos more though. I drove the car to and from the dyno and in 90 degree + heat yesterday and no issues running AC and everything. Car is working out great and drives way better than it did when it was all motor.
