I was suprised to see me in that last video. (1:40) I was also suprised to see how my car looks like it just rolled away from the light. It does not look quick or violent or anything. Looks as if i am jstu leaving a stop sign on the street ...

Niiiiiice, looks like it was a pretty good show. Sucks I was trapped at work. Was that the "PureEvil" Marauder? The one with the 6-71 blower on it.

Yeah, his car is mainly for show. It's not exactly setup for the track. The guy that owns it is some crusty old dude who is part of that huge car club in the W'loo/CF area and I guess he owns a car forum. I've tried to join the forum before but he won't approve you unless you are part of his gay ass car club.

That thing looks sweet, for sure. It was one of the first ones I seen when we pulled in and I even commented on it. Then we saw it run and everything that I was impressed with stopped there.

In the video my car looks like it moves out slow, however in those three pics of me running that camaro, it looks as if it squats nicely and is on the move. I guess its different angles and being an auto that gives it the two different effects.

Yea that was a great pass. Sucks it wasn't happy on that last run and I hope it didn't take out too much stuff.

Phish
10-23-2012, 07:36 AM
Honestly the first pass i made i just got it down the track. It launched not so hot and i short shifted everything and thats when it ran to a 11.9. Second pass (which is what the pics are from) i actually got after it a little. Pass felt like it was perfect from in the car but the slip shows it almost identical to the first pass. Thats when i new something was up. Then the third pass felt perfect as well. When i trapped 112 instead of 117 and ran a 12.2 i knew i had issues. Then i heard my engine knocking wanting out fromunder the hood so i parked it as you already know lol.

It shall be back next spring stronger then ever. I will prolly crack it open and look at it but just go ahead and throw a 5.7 or 6.0 in it for the bottom end.

Still disappointed you didn't just attempt to chug your mt dew rather than pouring it back in the bottle.

and don't worry that only happens with LT1's
Built LT1's around here heads/cam end up running low 13's at beast haha. There's one cam only 6spd LT1 that ran like 12.5@108mph I think - but he probably had a lot of tailwind on that pass.

I happen to know a friend that has a built LT1 - 6 speed that ran around the 12.1 @ 118 mph. It probably has high 11's in it with a good set of tires. that pass was on a set of 17" bald drag radials. Maybe next year he will be out at the shootout.

Are you talking about my car? Because it's not a 6 spd. And my car ran that time with MILD head porting/cam on a 141000 mile bottom end, bone stock suspension and street tires. I'm not saying it's anything special but it's not hard to do either.

Nah its my buddy's car. His is the only decent running LT1 I've seen in our area down here, can't remember the cam, other then that just bolt ons - hasn't changed anything in a long time since he's pretty happy with it. Every other LT1 that has been in the area is a pooch. his car:

I honestly don't really care about the trailer, but I did get some shit for bringing a u-haul last year so I have to give back the harassment. its always worth a few extra points if you drive there and back successfully though :)

He is hardly ever on this site, but yeah i think it started on the qual. pass. Then it just finnished it self off on the next pass. It was a bitch to track down what it was though. With it in the air and no load on the car the diff/axles acted as if everything was fine and there was no visible damage. But once you put theweight on the car and the car under load, it wouldnt move under its own power and sounded horrible

I believe i have found a JY LQ4 i am going to use the bottom end of. Put my LM7 heads on it - maybe mill them a bit, put a more aggressive cam in it, some E85, a shit ton of timing, and up the N2O shot. Still unsure what i am going to do with the 5.3 bottom end. A couple people have expressed interest in it.

better get a crate of pistons too just in case

Obvioulsy i will have it retard the timing when the nitrous is firing. But hopefully it will be quick enough on the new setup that i wont be using the bottle to much. ... hopefully

I was talking to him yesterday about the pass before he broke. He went 80mph in the 1/8th and 83mph in the 1/4 lol. His car on a good pass is around 94mph in the 1/8th. We haven't had a decent 1/4 pass yet.

Agreed - and thats the plan. I will need to look into how much to retard the timing when on E85 but i believe the rule of thumb for pump gas is Two degrees for every 50hp in the shot.

Yep - good ol 91. I just have the theory that if i am going to tear it down and build it up, might as well make my time worth while by bumping the compressoin, displacement, larger cam, and a higher octane fuel to play with the tune as well.

when you end up re-building or forging a motor, all the little things add up so you end up spending a putting a lot of time/money into it. there is definitely some benefits to a $500 junkyard 5.3 being dropped in and you don't have to care about it, especially if your around 500whp or less. Above that, its not a bad idea to beef things up.

I am hoping to go with the 6.0 running the higher compression heads and a larger cam on E85 it will put me at or around 400whp before the spray. That should move nicely in the quarter. I have a feeling i would be alot more cautious if i actually put money into the internals of the motor and had it built. But the fact that you can start going through these things like candy and there are plenty of them about. I am thinking jsut keep pushing the stock ones to their limit. Speaking of, you ever decide what your doing with that shortblock of yours?

they are pretty tough motors , you can push your power levels and the tune doesn't have to be perfect . do you know why it spun a bearing? i was thinking you either

1. got really unlucky
2. your tune or fuel was way off

if it were me, i would've probably ran 93 octane gas with the nitrous since it can be found around iowa without too much trouble . and for track use i probably would've put 5 gallons of some high octane in there to be extra safe

how much rpm?

Phish
10-29-2012, 12:28 PM
Thats the thing, The day i bought the car i put it on the dyno at RPM speed. I Knew then that my tach was off because the Dyno was showing a higher RPM then the Tach. (car only put down 290whp 280tq by the way) I would trust the dyno's signal due to its picking it up off a signal wire to an injector. That being said, i lived with the tach being off. I installed the window switch for the nitrous when i put the kit on the car. Its getting its RPM signal from the ECU. It was readying the correct RPM from what i know (matched what the dyno woudl have read but did nto match the tach). First pass at the track, i notced the nitrous kick off at the top end. So i knew i was passing ..... 6600 RPM (i believe that was the top of my window) So the next pass, i flipped the glove box open and glanced at the digital readout when crossing the traps. It says i was turning 7200. My thought was WTF, from what i experienced the limiter was set below that. By this time, it was already hurt and i went back to the lanes for what should have been my qualifying pass. And jsut left it ride out how it was. The rest is history. Now that i think about it i am pretty clueless at what the limiter is set at, i could have swore it was alot lower then that rpm when it was on the dyno.

Yea, thats up there with the stock ls6 springs. Even though you have a ls6 cam you also have 799 heads correct? Those would not have the lightweight titanium intake valves that stock ls6(243's) have even though they are the same otherwise.

i've spun to 7k a few times when my gearing/tire diameter was not ideal but i definitely didn't want to spin any higher. ed, would that kind of rpm cause a spun rod bearing failure or wouldn't a valve train component fail first ?

Phish
10-29-2012, 12:56 PM
Heads are 862 castings... When i first heard the ticks i thought it was coming from the top end... but after that last pass i made, it was pretty clear it was coming from the bottom end. Plus the lack of oil pressure kinda confirms it .

Scott
10-29-2012, 01:40 PM
Not very informed on LS motors but I see no reason why rpm alone would cause a spun bearing.

I've heard of it being caused by too much timing hammering out the rod bearings though. Thats the best way to tune high HP alcohol engines is checking rod bearings when you get close to the limit on timing, and EGT's.... drag race style anyway

Also all these people out here converting to E85 or E98 or whatever with forced induction, you might want to consider looking into higher flow crankcase breather systems as you get alot more blow by than with straight gasoline and Im pretty sure alot of people are overlooking this little detail

slow ride
10-29-2012, 02:29 PM
I don't see the rpm being a problem for the bottom end with good oil pressure, but without knowing the condition of the rods, rod bolts, bearings, etc it's anyones guess. I'm not sure what the oil pressure of the engine was since it was reading on the stock rx7 gauge (set up for reading way higher pressure also) which does not list exact pressure, just high/low etc. Stock rods will live longer at lower rpm under boost better than say a wild NA setup trying to go 7k+ all the time. Stock rods have no rib on the cap for added strength and the bolts are not the best if the early version and even then they are still small bolts.

I do see rpm being a problem with a ls6 cam, ls6 springs running stock valves in those 862 castings. Factory rev limit on a ls6 is 6600 or so but again thats with lightweight titanium intake valves. Valve float doesn't really cause a spun rod bearing though. I suppose if they hit really hard, but at that point more would have been going wrong :)

As Scott said Detonation would be my first bet for sure. Stock It doesn't take a lot to deform stock aluminum bearings. I'd put a good oil pressure gauge on the car though. If you guys see a decent change in pressure at a "normal" temp you have something going on.

you break it during that qualifying pass? heard some wheel hop
I finally broke during the competition stuff. I got a bye in the first two rounds. After the second bye I decided to make a pass. Things felt a little off... and then the car broke. It got out of the whole really well that pass though! It was probably my fastest 60 ft, if I even made it that far.... :33:

I'm pretty sure the teeth between the axle and the inner CV joint were steadily grabbing less and less each pass; I don't think it clean sheared any teeth off.. I think they just became rounded off and then eventually flat. I made that my pass... and I'm pretty sure that's when the inner CV joint broke into five pieces.

Good thing I have three extra axles...

If you were blowing fuel at people from the staging lanes, you probably started washing bearings. Most spun rods are due to people slapping in high mileage engines that have seen quite a bit of debris and the bearing catches. RPM can do it, but not usually. Or some sort of oil starvation/cavitation at high rpm. Take some pics of the bearings once the engine is apart and cylinder walls, that should tell the story.

slow ride
11-16-2012, 06:13 AM
Well that could happen if you lost the oil wedge due to fuel in the oil causing dilution. Does the oil smell like fuel, etc? It's hard to say what the oil pressure was when running, but if a ls spins a bearing 9 times out of 10 it's a rod. Need to look at the all the bearings to figure out more.

You could build this thing or slap in another junker. I'd rather have a buit motor that I set up clearances on, but it will cost a few more bucks. You can make a 5.7 or 6.3 pretty easy with that block. If you found a crank or machined the current one, measure and do bearings, rings, etc it wouldn't be that bad price wise. It all depends on your budget.

I was discussing this last night. I am somewhaat unsure of what i want to do. However, i like the idea of just buying bottom ends and putting them in if soemthing goes wrong in the furture. However, I could most likely bore this out and get all the work done for roughly the same price as a lq4 block. So i am unsure of what i should do here. I know i want to keep it a nitrous motor and am wanting to go high compression on something that is 6.0l or greater. I have not looked into prices of internals yet either.

Here is some very rough notes on my build. once you start digging into the engine, it can get ugly quick because you want to keep making everything new and perfect. and it takes a long time/labor to open up the motor and button it back up, new gaskets, torquing everything properly and dropping it back into the car. so i say either do it all at once and do it right or just throw an untouched junkyard motor in there

True, but you never really know what you have. Factory tolarances are WIDE and it's nice to make things fit the way you want. Heck if that engine was mine I'd have it running again for under $500 or more depending on any upgrades. Thats with better bearings, used crank/machined crank, line hone, stock rods/pistons, measuring, seals etc. It's not as easy if you don't have a friendly machine shop, etc though. I might know of a few 5.3 blocks laying around also if needed.

If you get something used look for lower milage stuff. Make sure the oiling system is good and get that valvetrain setup well. Make sure it's tuned up right on and off the power adder.

the oem pistons ring lands or rods will fail before the oem main studs have any issues. dido for the head studs i believe

you could spend $100 on arp rod bolts but its a lot better bang for the buck to spend $430 and get a full set of 8 forged eagle rods that already come with a stronger arp rod bolts and the design is thicker around the bolt
