Figured some people here might have experience with these.
pretty much have an opportunity for a 92 s10 5spd in great shape or a 96(i think) s10 5spd in good shape. 92 will end up being $900. 96 $1000-1300. 92 has 150k miles, 96 has 170k
both decently maintained, one thing I kind of like is the 92 has working AC (r134 converted) and the 96 doesn't.

Anyway, I just want something that I can throw my ruckus in to ferry it from UNI and back when I'm up there. That and not paying premium gas would be nice.

Can you guys give me any good pros/cons of either motor - which one would you buy?

I will say those little 2.2 engines last forever. I had over 220k on one. Before giving the vehicle to my youngest sister for HS I tore it down for a quick inspection/rebuild and it was squeaky clean inside and in very good shape even after years of constant abuse. Still runs like a champ.

As for S10's themselves I cannot say I am a big fan, my wife owned a 96 for a while with the 4.3 and even after replacing every suspension component it still rode like crap. Sold it and purchased an Explorer and have been much happier.

Well reassuring me a bit on the 2.2l since the 2.5L "iron duke" is the only one I know a decent amount of. I have driven the 92 and it seriously rides absolutely incredible. The 96 i just know about through a friend who works with the guy whos thinking of selling it. Haven't seen or driven it. Seems like its just going to come down to which one I prefer in person.

96 looks better, and I believe gets better mpg. A friend of my dd's an 87 s10 4cyl 5spd, beats it everyday.

Really can't lose with either. I like newer trucks, unless the 92 is in really good shape, I would go 96.
