Technically yes, just get your carry permit and that covers that. I used www.mdgunsafety.com for my class, free and online. Cost me only $20ish for the permit in the end.

You only need a permit to acquire pistols, don't need one to possess.

Great more Chicago people with guns running around...jk Congrats on getting away from the Nazis that run Illinois.
There is another website some guys at work used to get their permits. Cost them like $10 for the course and whatever the permit costs now. Black Hawk and Linn county accepted it.

I've heard very good things about the classes through Cedar Valley Outfitters in Marion. I think it's a little more expensive than most but really hands on and he is supposed to be a great instructor. I'll be going to some if his classes next summer and my fiancee is going there to get her permit.
I took my original class through the Isaac Walton League when we still had to do the shooting qualification but I don't think they do classes anymore.

Blackhawk does because my buddy took it to court to prove it was a legitimate course. As an avid shooter I don't see why I would need a class to sit in but for someone not familiar with firearms I would recommend spending the money to be trained correctly or going to range and getting familiar with handguns with a person knowledged in the art of shooting.
