So... I'm about 50/50 on buying an 05 CTS-V.
It has a blown up motor (theoretically).

If I get the motor rebuilt, is there any other little things anybody would recommend doing?
A stock rebuild on the LS6 is looking to be around $3000.
I was thinking about a cam or something but getting it tuned sounds like a PITA.

Its probably going to be a daily driver for now. Unless I ditch the Rustang.

they are that cheap?
LS6 from junkyards with reasonable mileage are over 5k.
LS2 is a less drastic version of the same power output. I'm inclined to leave it alone and leave it stock. Its not a race car.

What it do drop a valve spring? Rocker arm take a dump? Not a lot goes wrong with them. I'd fix it and run it. Mabe add a small cam or some little things that will still keep it reliable and more fun. Diff is still going to be glass so no 1/4 play time (no launching all the time on the street even).

A blown up LS?? No way, it must not have been built by God himself.

Go for it if the price is right. Those cars are really nice.

I don't know yet... lol. I'm told it has lower end noise.

Pull it out and just throw a 5.3 in with a turbo

That would be amazing.

Its going to be a DD for now though. Unless I get rid of the Mustang.
...who wants to buy a Cobra?!

yea just put a cheap 5.3 in it. the minor conversion parts like maybe pcm, throttle body, some accessories? etc you can probably salvage from the ls6

Another route that might be cheaper is an 01-02 LS1 if you’re thinking about swapping out the cam anyway. You can probably pick up a used set of stock 243s or 799s on LS1Tech for about $500.

It has a ls6, figure out whats wrong with it and fix it. Ryan might have a ls1 block for sale :)

The gen 1 v's are ok, but some parts are hard to get for them as my friend has one. They have a lot of V only parts that you can't use from the regular CTS. They seem to fall apart with age more than I'd like also.

Isn't a LS6 just a cam and heads on a late LS1 block? If it is going to be a daily driver, get a LS1 shortblock put the LS6 cam and heads on it and be done with it.

Although I haven't had mine tuned, I've been told LS6's aren't hard to tune. My buddy in Kansas put a M112 on his CTS-V and had it street tuned and he is extremely pleased with it.

The weakest link on a Gen 1 is the rear differential.

ls6 also has an better intake mani, but the 01 02 ls1's have them too. pretty minor stuff.

Even if it didn't, if he was going to throw a cam and a better flowing set of heads on there, he'd probably want a better intake anyway.

ls6 is better than most give it credit for. I made 480+whp back in the day on my 383. Fast 90 is probably 10-15 better up top and 15-25 more if it's ported. I'd spend more on better heads over having a lesser set of ported stockers.

I ended up not buying the car. I don't really need to try and afford two over-priced vehicles.

If I run across another deal in the future, I might snag it up though. Thanks for the info guys.

If it is still for sale post up more info. Someone else might on the boards might want to pick it up.

I don't know who would pay that kind of money when you can get a forged one for cheaper

It was at an auction.

Junkyard LS6 motors with less than 100k are $5k or more.

I believe it, its overpriced because its newer and comes in the pricier cars like the vette and Cadillac . That's why you don't buy the ls6. Its just an ls1 with slightly better heads and cam. You can get a <100k longblock 2001-2002 ls1 $2k, comes with ls6 intake. Everyone changes the cam to something more aggressive than the ls6 cam anyway. That leaves your ls1 without the ls6 heads but they are only marginally better than ls1 heads anyway. You can port the ls1 heads or get aftermarket heads that will outflow the ls6 heads for a better bargain.
