Figured I'd get this out of the way. I'm a young professional that just got transferred to Des Moines. I'll be starting there in the middle of July. I started in F-bodies, now I've moved on to other things.

Here's a picture of my most recent F-body (sold)

And here's a picture of my most recent creation :33: - 1978 Datsun 280z. The body is about the only (mostly) stock thing on it haha

Thanks guys. Also, I'm trying to find a place to live up there. Anyone have any lines on a reasonably priced apartment or house? Also, anyone have some garage space for rent?

It all depends on how much you make. You can get low-income housing if you make less than $40k a year.

very nice, almost did a 240z before my rx7 but its hard to find rust free ones and the clean ones aren't cheap

Phish and I both lived here for a while. It was decent, reasonably priced at the time, close to a lot of different things. Other than the small disagreement I had with the new owners about leaving my boots in the hallway, I didn't have much to complain about. Garage was $50 a month.

I also have a few customers that have rentals pop up now and then. I got my brother into one of them. I'll keep an ear out if another pops up.

Well unfortunately (fortunately) I will be making more than that. My budget is flexible, but I'd like to keep it under 800 a month, with a garage. Be it a nice place with a garage, or a cheaper place, with a separate shop. Another thing to consider is that i have a couple decently sized tool boxes that will be coming with me.

Gotcha, if $800 is your top dollar you should have no problem finding a place downtown or West DSM. I have a few buddies who live at the place Sparkles linked to, its pretty nice.

Welcome to Des Moines.

Not a huge car scene here in town but there are a couple/few of us still.

Great looking Z!

Pretty aggressive stance on the Z. No mistaking when I see it rolling around.

I lived in the Jordan creek apartments off of 19th St South, near grand and railroad. $640 a month with a pet and garage, two bedroom.

That sir is my dream car, down to the flares! Very sick!:hump: What do you do with it? Autox, drag racing, shows?

Sunny Z
06-19-2012, 11:42 PM
I built it to be an "everything" car. I have yet to track it, due to just now upgrading the axle shafts. With the suspension mods, I plan to definitely auto-x it, and road track. I love the drag strip too though, so I'm sure it will be there. I like shows, but its not "show" quality - at least in my opinion. I just don't have the money / time / justification to finish all the body work at the moment.

Thanks for the suggestions on housing. I'll be working in Carlisle, so i'd like to stay less than 20 minutes from there.

Small update:

This is what I did tonight

http://i592.photobucket.com/albums/tt4/steepss/SidwayZ/2012-06-19_23-53-07_991.jpg

Took me all of 90 minutes to get everything out (including trans) and ready for the cherry picker, which i loaned to a friend a while ago.

Doing a little engine upgrade. I'm using the Heads / cam / intake LS1 from my camaro. It should bump it up to around 450-475 wheel, with matching or greater torque. 11.4:1 with AFR Heads.

Also going to be dropping ~80# with the aluminum block, which will put it under 2700#. roughly 2680 if my calculations are correct. Should be fun!

What cam spec's are those? Factory intake too? Any idea what it weighs with the aluminum block?

Pretty sweet all around though thats for sure.

If you're living in Carlisle, I suggest finding a place in Pleasant Hill. The cops suck, but its 10x better than anything you're going to find on the South side imo. Been there, done that.

pleasant hill is also just more... pleasant. it is a quick drive to carlisle and i know there are houses and townhomes all with at least two car garages for sale or rent all over that place.

Btw, welcome to the far east side of des moines if you choose p hill, I'm a little farther east in Prairie City.

It weighed 2750 with about a half tank, but I'm going to be adding a head unit, sub, and amp, so ^ thats my guess, before the stereo.

oh, and I was kinda looking at West Des Moines for a place - thats not so far away.

And cam specs are a Vengeance Racing VRX4. 228/230 .588/.594 on a 112*.

Not a monster cam by anyone's standard, but it makes a TON of torque. I also had to fly cut the pistons to make it fit. Made 10ft/lbs more torque than hp last time it was on the rollers, but in a completely different setup, so those are irrelevant.

lol at the south side comments. Maybe I should be red faced admitting I live on the south side, however its not all that bad. Knock on wood I have never had any issues.

Suggestions for places to live and keeping it close to Carlisle would be Norwalk or Carlisle. Both smaller towns however 15 minutes away from downtown or West Des Moines.

If you don't mind me asking, where are you working at in Carlisle?

CROWN
06-20-2012, 01:28 PM
I grew up in norwalk and live in indianola. Norwalk is a pretty good place to live. Nothing to horrible happens there and is somewhat peaceful. And theres a dyno :).

Thats pretty sweet, I am assuming in Avon Lake? Or do they have offices in Carlisle?

If its in Avon that makes Pleasant Hill even closer, on the by pass its only a 5 minute drive then.

So where would be my best bet at finding a house / apt with a garage, for a decent amount of money, thats not ridiculously far away from everything?

I knew I recognized this car from somewhere. I was following your build on tech but obviously lost track since the wheels and flairs. You should consider bringing it to the IAF shootout this year.

There are a few places over by jordan creek. I think they are a little high on your price point though. I live at the Polo Club in West Des Moines. Its a nice place but the garage sucks. It does include washer and dryer in the unit which is nice. I'm not sure what the are like but Wellington is a pretty good sized complex.

but the garages like to burn down...

Signature place in West Des Moines suited me well for two years, pretty quiet.

Yeah, thats me / my car.

That was on a baseline tune, runs even better now. I put about 2 lengths on a 540whp procharged c5 Z06 last weekend from a 30-140. Car felt good.

I'm totally down for taking it to the shootout. I need to put a tire under it and get some track time first though. Are there any strips close to DSM?

Xboosted23X
07-16-2012, 06:08 PM
Eddyville is 1/8th mile and a lil over a hour. Closest 1/4 will be cedar falls with is a couple hour drive.
Have you moved down to DM yet?
Any interest in auto x or small road course?

Sunny Z
07-16-2012, 07:26 PM
Yes, yes, and yes. I'm living in an extended stay hotel in Pleasant hill until my apt in WDSM is available aug 1.

when / where would said events be?

And i'd be OK with an 1/8 mile. I'd really only be worried about the launch and 2-3 shifts.

Xboosted23X

I know Eddyville has a lot of midnight mania on friday nights.
Autox is put on by the DMVRscca group. The next event is supposed to be on the 5th of august.
The small time attack is in Marshalltown which is about 50 mins from Phill. Its on a go kart track and always a good time. Next event for that is on august 18th.

That was the first time out with the new motor. Hopefully I'll learn how to shift before I make another video

It will be fun to get it to the track and actually get it to hook up out of the hole.
