So Ive owned this car now for a couple years and finally decided to start pulling the engine since i finally bought a house with a garage so, i figured i would pull it due to it had some issues. this is how it sits now, the engine is on a stand and is built just need a couple more things to finish like tranny and exhuast hoping for 450hp to the wheels on a natural aspirated LT1 when complete. I'll upload engine pictures and mod list later just figured i would start a build thread.

What PCM are you going to be using?
That I'm trying to figure out still since mine is a 93 I have a speed density vs the maf so I'm gonna need a flash tune chip to get my car going due to the big increase in air and fuel intake that my engine will be consuming. People have told me to call PCMforless to get a flash chip but I still need a advice on that and tuning.

seems like there are very few birds, in or around DSM. I know a few people with birds that are always willing to meet up and cruise. But the way my build is going i just i have enough money to finish it soon.
Anybody have experence with auto transmissions maybe help with a shift kit? im gonna go with a performabuilt tranny but im gonna switch after my breaking period and once i save alittle money, so i just need my tranny to hold till the end of break in.

What did you give for the trans? Exact deal that I bought for my car last fall. Same shifter too!
APPLES355
08-27-2012, 04:07 PM
Just for comparison sake. A friend of mine has an all forged 383 with ported heads, ported intake, and a few other goodies that i cant remember. His car made 405 hp and 396 ft-lbs. He had the block and heads machined to get the dcr up to the edge of running 91 octane with cam he installed. If i remember correctly a different cam choice than whats in the engine could have gain him some power, but a question on how much. His car also has long tube headers and a six speed. I could get more info on the engine if you would want. it has been 4 or 5 years since it was built. I will say that his car is a blast to drive with to torque it makes. Currently he is on his third 7.5 rear with never dumping the clutch only rolling into the throttle.

Well progress update:
Put the car together after had a slave cyclinder issue that's to sparkles helped fixed that. And also had a wiring issue which was pretty embarrassing when you have friends videotaping the first start up and nothing happens and you can't figure out what it is lol. I think I traced it down to a bad starter. Lucky my starter was a lifetime warranty so I have a new start just haven't put it on yet, to see if it starts.

I had that issue when I first went to start my mustang. Did not have anyone video taping though. I think my heart sank through the floor.
Turned out I missed a small ground wire and it fired right up.

Damn F-bodies, haha. A few years ago after a long winter I had a ground fall off around the transmission and you could see my power get drained away the more I got after it, sometimes to the point where it wouldn't shift. After hunting electrical demons for two weeks, I found it. I know thine pain, hopefully the starter fixes it. :D

Well my heads are milled and I have the deck milled and I'm running just forged flat tops with 2 valve relief. I'm getting 12.5 volts to the starter when ignition is turned, the battery loaded tested great, and it starts to turn over then just after maybe one full cycle the motor stops and then the starter can't turn it then if you try again it does same thing rotates once and then nothing so... I figured my compression is to high the starter.. But the is brand new napa premium just got it new 2 weeks ago.

IMHO Mail order tunes are just a crutch to get a car running good enough to drive it to get it tuned OR if you have the software and hardware a base tune so you can fine tune it yourself.

dumping fuel? maybe the fuel is not getting lit up in a cylinder. if you have narrowband o2 sensors, you could monitor each bank to see if they are both cycling around stoich. If a cylinder isn't getting spark, that banks o2 will show lean.
always a good idea to verify fuel pressure. on some cars the walbro 255 will cause the fuel pressure to go up if the stock regulator can't keep up, in that case you would run richer. but the car would still run decent with just a modest increase in fuel pressure.

And my O2 have been deleted and I guess I didn't know the about the pump being able to add pressure and I haven't checked my spark but when I blew my headgasket and pulled the heads it appeared I had good spark due to the carbon build up on the heads but idk maybe I need some lower resist wires and a better coil them the msd blaster

You get what you pay for. That's what you're finding out. With all things considered, $500 to get a car running right after all the mods and everything you've done is peanuts. The tune makes everything work together like a symphony. It's not always about making peak numbers.

That thing should be a blast when it's done and running right. Just take it easy on that rear end until you figure out what you wanna do about it. It sucks that every year around this time, everyone is hurrying up trying to get their stuff done and back on the road. All winter, things get pushed back or take longer than they should, and then 90% of the work happens in March and April. Corners get cut, and before you know it, it's the middle of summer and you still don't have a running car.

it depends on the car and I don't know lt1 specifics. but oem narrowband info feeds into the computer. you would need borrow a scanner/code reader, laptop or even smartphone apps can display that kinda data just depends on the cars support. otherwise o2 sensor gauges or hook up the multimeter to the wires. its one of those things that i probably wouldn't go out of my way and buy a gauge to see narrowband o2 info but if gary already had a way to see it easily it can be useful look at.
kinda hard to debug issues with limited data ... no wideband, fuel pressure gauge, logger etc. (waiting for someone to tell me i'm a spoiled idiot and need to learn how to read spark plugs)
just always a good idea to work through everything so your dyno guy doesn't end up working on a mechanical issue all day or a bad/wrong sensor, wiring, fuel pump, injectors, ignition issue etc

wow, i'd start looking at the problem being something else other than the starter. turn the motor over by hand to see how stiff it is. make sure your not in a hydrolock situation with too much fuel or coolant in a cylinder causing the starter to fight through that. if your injectors sat around for a long time, try blowing through them with your mouth to make sure any aren't stuck open.
maybe a timing issue/misfire/backfire causing the motor to push the piston backwards during starting and jolting the starter

I used to own several DSMs too. Doesn't make me an expert on them. At the end of the day, that LT1 is just a SBC which isn't all that hard. As far as the the first guy who set them, I have yet to hear who that was, nor do I care. What I will say is that what I saw being done is going to result in some loose rocker arms later down the road. I'm not here to measure dicks. It's not my car. That's why I left. Lol, do you really think that was the case? I'm a fat kid. I was hungry. Had I been aware that everybody and their second cousin was coming, I wouldn't have showed up to begin with. I was supposed to check it out after he did it. Had no idea that he was calling in the calvary to do it for him.
Hey hey I tried adjusting the valves from what I was told to do and somehow I made them worse lol first they were to tight then the second time I had them way loose. This was my first time adjusting valves speacially when theses rockers are so damn touchy. I followed the whole baselobe and turn the pushrods till you can't move it (zero lash)then moving it 1/4 turn with Allen and wrench. but it still ran like shit my it was my mistake most likely. I was just looking for any advice from people with experience I could get. In the end everything seems to be better now with help and advice. It's all a learning curve that I'm still trying to learn as I go

Your point was...? He was doing them wrong, or no? Sorry, it's early.
Also, why didn't you tell me you were going to eat. I'm a fat kid too and could have used some food! I was doing absolutely nothing to help Gary's situation anyway, ha.

Any updates, Gary?
A Lot but it's running lol but I'm still trying to work out issues i just changed some stuff on it I went with a 180 thermostat vs the 160 cause my engine just isn't getting hot enough which I think is part of the reason I'm running rich I just put my fourth starter yes fourth lol first one was bad, second one cracked case, and third cracked a case again. now I messed with the opti hoping that's what my issues was causing a kick back on fire up. Also changed the coolant temp sensor. I'm just trying to work out the bugs ill upload the video later. The car runs great with no load but soon as its underload it falls on its face so ya that's were I'm at.

Okay here's my cry for help car has been running since motor has been in. Here's where it all started so since I kept breaking starters and backfiring issues I pulled my opti so I could check the splines on the drive to make it correct so put the opti on after couple times trying to align it we got it on and got it to run decent again. So we finished installing all the water hoses and waterpump and lowered it back down now I can't get it to run and it has cranking issues. So me and my buddies have got to the point were I'm just lost and don't know what to do. Is there anybody intown that knows these LT1 that can come help me get this thing running right I'm willing to pay someone to help me out I'm just lost and don't know what to do anymore with it. Please

seemed like a quick change in plans. wasn't long ago when you put the built lt1 in. are the lt1's that bad? traded a forged 5.7 lt1 with worked heads for a stockish 5.3 ls ?

I loved my LT that engine was awesome and I wish I could had kept it but I needed money for the build... That engine ran hard as hell and someday I'll build another one someday down the road as a stroker. But I just wanted a turbo really bad and my compression on my LT wasnt ideal for boost and LoS are just great boost engines so I decided to make a change cause I wanted bigger numbers. It's just the name of the game
