Back from the dead. I drop by for a few weeks about once every 2-3 years. Anyways, here's my latest project. It all started back in mid April 2011...

Just picked this bad boy up. Single Owner. All maintenance performed by dealership with records. Damn near flawless..I'm happy

Pro 5 R Stage 2 Air Intake System...Sounds cool and looks kinda neat (again, shoulda bought the Carbonio) but the fitment was horrid...oh well

Upgraded the DV today to a Forge unit to replace my failing Stock C revision one.

A better picture of the AFE Intake...It included a charge pipe... thats why I selected it over the carbonio...However the fitment was horrid...

That intake made my car run like a bag of dicks

Got an RMA from ECS today (Return Merchandise Authorization) to return the faulty air intake and the issues it has caused. Now ECS is trying to stick me with a 15% restocking fee and pay shipping....

Here is the email I just sent them...We'll see what happens

Chris,
Will this RMA be subject to the 15% restocking fee? Given the quality/design issues this part has displayed and the failure modes currently present as a result of these non-conformances, I would have a very difficult time swallowing this cost. I am also requesting to be reimbursed for partial shipment charges for order number E413573.

As discussed, I have not put in any additional time into obtaining measurable discrepancies (via Romer CMM) on the out of position holes at the heat shield-to-charge pipe joint or MAF input. I also have not obtained any vag-com logs that will prove my assumptions of the charge pipes being a different volume around the MAF location. As I’m sure your technical support will agree, a larger MAF housing will produce an increase in the volume of air, but a decrease in the velocity across the sensor for a given volume of air. The MAF sensors in these cars are designed to read the velocity of air coming in through the intake and will then calculate a volume from an algorithm located within the ECU. Given that the velocity of the air is lower (although volume is larger), the ECM will add a minimal amount of fuel to maximize the efficiency of the combustion cycle. On the exhaust side, the O2 sensor will see this as a lean condition and add additional fuel. The handshake between the MAF and the O2 sensor is very delicate. When this condition occurs, the inputs to the algorithm (the O2 and MAF voltage) no longer makes sense to the ECM and it will eventually throw code P2177.

If you have any more questions, you can have a technician contact me and we can discuss in further details. I have full access to a quality lab here at work. I would be able to place obtained dimensions into a formula and tell you the exact correction factor needing to be programmed into the ECU to run this intake. I am worried that you will have additional problems with this intake as the root-cause is a design issue that has been overlooked by the folks at AFE.

Thank you,

Wound up getting the thing returned without a restocking fee, and free shipping both ways

Some new pictures again. Cleaned up the rear tips, car actually got a buff and a wax.

Personally, I like these wheels when they're clean. I'm not sure why as a lot of people hate them. However, these wheels are a pain in the ass to clean, and they will be going away....soon...I'm currently looking at a set of 18 inch VMR in silver to swap out the stock wheels with. Will be getting some 19" for summer wheels next season

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/IMGP1115.jpg

Before on the right, after on the left. Being stage I+ with a testpipe this car, the tips turn black. I just installed a new set of NGK Laser Platinums...Car doesn't seem to run much different, maybe slightly smoother at idle

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/IMGP1107.jpg

Clean...This car is the cleanest car I have ever owned, washed, or otherwise...This include the cars I have detailed, Porsches, Vettes, you name it, even my S4...PO was rediculous with taking care of this thing

Love those cars. Heavily thought about getting one instead of my 335xi.

I heavily thought about getting a 335Xi before I bought this. I couldn't swallow a few facts:

1. Interior isn't layed out as good as the Audi
2. AWD system isn't as good
3. Fuel economy isn't as good (this is actually a concern of mine because the car is a commuter and one of the main reasons why I didn't swing an S4/RS4)
4. Relability isn't as good on the BMW
5. Price difference. I got in and out the door for around $20k with the Audi. BMW is pretty much the same amount of car (minus the few differences above) for $5K more. I couldn't justify it...Plus, I've always had Audis.

lenny
02-15-2012, 11:42 AM
^Also like to point out that if I would have gotten an S4/RS4, it woulda put me at least $5K over the cost of the 335Xi. The way my car is modded right now, it's just about as quick as an S4/RS4
-Dan

Have to also keep in mind the 335 is a straight six twin turbo, flash stage 2 with cobb and put on the downpipes. They get serious. Audi looks better but Ive never heard of them being more reliable than anything.

lenny
02-15-2012, 12:17 PM
Come on now, I follow the German scene. I know those 335s are a real monster once you do bolt ons and chip. :)

However, those BMWs also have HUGE issues with their HPFP. Also, I've been hearing about lower mileage (less than 50K) turbo failures. Something I want nothing to do with.

Audis have an issue with the HPFP, but if you replace the cam follower and have the revision B camshaft, you don't need to worry about it. This car is my commuter car (~100 miles a day). As you can imagine, I don't want anything to do with busted turbos or fucked up HPFP. If something that important breaks on my car, I want it to be on my terms. If I want to put a a different turbo on my, I want to do it because I want to, not because the old one blew up and I need to.

-Dan

Drifte
02-15-2012, 12:31 PM
Yea I dont want to clutter your thread with all those details. So far Trevors had the HPFP's all replaced by the dealer at their request. I loved his 2 door 335, now that thing looked good on coilovers. They also sound great if you get over the wastegate chatter.

Shit is dialed in pretty damn well. Did a 2-3-4 gear pull with Rob (MK6 GTI with every bolt on imagineable minus a larger turbo running race file + meth) on the way home. He still edges me out but by maybe a half car through that range. However, considering he has more mods and 300 lb less to lug around, I know a new HPFP, FMIC, and a full exhaust will make this car DAMN quick! Full exhaust is already on the way, other stuff will more than likely be coming within the next few months. I know I said I wasn't going to mod this car, and it's gone from bone stock to this in ~ 8 months...lol...wow

On with the pictures.

Where we tapped into the res for the meth. Currently I'm running close to a 50/50 mix. Pump kicks on around 2 psi and goes full bore around 10 psi. I'm running the 100 oct file from APR and the thing runs STRONG. I haven't done any logs but the butt dyno feels GREAT!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/1223111024b.jpg

We mounted the pump on the stock bracket. Didn't even have to drill any holes!

Here you can see where we tapped into the upper intercooler hose using the dedicated Devils Own kit for rubber hoses. No leaks...and pretty discrete. This is a VERY clean install

Controller. Red LED matches the interior lighting. Also, it's pretty discrete, which is nice

At dark

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/IMGP1245-1.jpg

Devils own progressive kit is nice. We well those here at work, and we put one on ryans car. Easy to install and does lower IAT's a lot. Exhaust may not do much since you already have a down pipe, but it should sound neat. Is the stock intercooler sufficient?

lenny

Stock intercooler has opportunities for improvement...But, I'll get to that later :) Still don't have this thread up to current day

Anyways, while cleaning my car recently, I noticed that I had a stand-light burnt out within the drivers side taillight. I had also noticed that there were some moisture droplets in the reverse light. This kind of stuff REALLY bothers me. I immediately pulled the taillight out of the car to investigate...As it turns out, one of the tabs that fastens the bulb-holder assembly to the lense assembly has been cracked (I'm assuming this was done when a bulb was replaced in the past). The bulb-holder was not being securely fastened to the lense, and was leaking moisture as a result

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/491E65C7-DBF8-4370-8D5A-56D671E695E8-19447-00000EA05DE2766C.jpg

"Well, shit," I thought to myself. Time to order a new lense. I saw that ECStuning had the euro-tails in stock so I figured I might as well buy them.

European OEM Goodness

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/IMG_0898.jpg

Althought they appear to look the same as the NA spec tails, they actually have am amber turn signal indicator

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/IMG_0899.jpg

NA OEM on the outside, Euro OEM on the inside

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/IMG_0903.jpg

At this point I noticed a difference between the female connector on the bulb-holder when comparing the NA Spec bulb-holder and the Euro Spec Bulb holder

NA Spec bulb-holder

Euro Spec Bulb Holder

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/IMG_0904.jpg

I wound up just using the NA spec bulb-holder in the Euro Spec lense. Seems to work great, good light as intended (the Euro spec and the NA spec bulb holder are the same part number but for some reason have slightly different connectors).

And this thread is about to get a whole hell of a lot more interesting, again. This car is most likely going to get the APR stage III kit in the next few months (GT2871R kit with ALL supporting mods). Yes, the kit is somewhat "expensive" and some would even say, "overpriced." To them I say, "for me, the price of the kit is worth not having the headache of having to fiddle around with things that were never designed to work together.” This is going to be my daily driver for the upcoming years even after I get back from Germany. The car doesn't need to have 400 AWHP because lets face it, I'll buy a "fun car" for my weekend/track needs when I come back home. For me, I want a reliable, turn-key 300+AWHP/300+AWTQ daily driver that's capable of taking corners, having some fun on the way to work or on road trips, and is capable of handling any weather thrown at the thing. I also want the ability to upgrade should I choose to do so in the future (the GT2871R APR kit has a T25 flange and I could slap something else on in the future if the mood strikes me right). I TRUST APR WITH MY ENGINE MANAGEMENT. On the few APR tuned cars I have had in the past, I've never had a misfire, I’ve never had a cold start problem, never blew up an engine, etc. In comparison, I've found friends cars with "one-off" custom tunes to be unreliable when the weather turns to junk here in the Midwest (40-50F degree ambient temp swings in less than 36 hours) even though those same cars most likely throw down a few extra horsepower on a dyno when the weather is “perfect.” I'll pay the extra $$$ and sacrifice a few WHP to not have to put up with those kinds of problems, even if it is "overpriced."

Probably sometime in the next few days, I'm going to order an 034 LWFW, 034 Street density transmission mount, new pilot bearing, and new hardware for the LWFW from 034. I'm pretty set on also getting a Southbend clutch from 034. My only dilemma is figuring out which clutch to order. I’m almost positive I want the SS HD Stage II Endurance. That clutch should hold up to my needs and will be good for a daily driver even once the GT turbo gets hung on the engine. Does anyone have any experience with the Southbend clutches on a stage III B6/B7? I’d love to hear some feedback. Stay tuned!!!

I already had my Bi-Xenons coded to RDW. So, tonight I took advantage of the independent foglight mod. Current lighting modifcations:

Retrofitted OEM Bi-Xenon/adaptive headlamps from European RS4 (Ecodes) coded to RDW via VCDS
RS4 "Ghost Bulbs" in turn signals (look silver when not flashing, amber when lit)
Philips XenStart 5000K D1S
Ziza Yellow Foglight bulbs
Lamin-X Yellow film on fog light lenses
European Tailights (amber blinkers)
ECS (Ziza) License Plate LED assemblies
ECS Smoked reflectors (in bumper)

I guess every interior/trunk/glovebox bulb has also been replaced with LEDs but you can't see those in the pics:

Rear complete.

Initial thoughts....WOW. I'm wondering why the RSB was never this size from the factory. Car feels much more stable/predictable in the corners. As for the brakes? They are definitely much better. The pedal feel is MUCH different. I feel like I can more easily control the amount of braking I apply. I chalk this up to the SS braided lines more than anything. The car now has more stoping/handling capability than it has horsepower. Good thing, because more power is next on the list after the clutch gets installed. Stay tuned!!!

I might also add that I just purchased a Drakes-Performance Stg III clutch kit (includes hardware, bearings, etc). It's basically a modified B7 RS4 clutch with a ceramic LUK disc. Should be good to hold the 400-500 chp that this car should make by the end of the summer (hopefully). Currently looking to purchase a Clutchmasters SF flywheel (obviously sourcing isnt' a problem, just searching for the best price). I'll probably pick that up by the end of the week and will be doing the clutch install within the next few weeks. From there it's carbon cleaning, HPFPupgrade.com STG I HPFP, and a 140 PRV. Car will probably be getting injectors, tune, GT2871R, manifold, and all that other shit in March/April. I can't wait

I can legimately say that Audi has been VERY reliable over the past decade. Make sure to use GOOD oil and stay up on routine maintenance and they won't give you any fitz. Also make sure to properly warm up and cool down the engine/drivetrain/etc.

I'm excited, this clutch setup is rated for big turbo power levels (I don't consider K04 big power ;)) and retains stock like driveability and durability. It shouldn't glaze over like some other offerings in the community, or make my left calf muscle twice the size of my right. There are guys running BIG turbos (GT30xx and larger) and have had this clutch installed for 40k+ miles with ZERO problems.

There's more stuff showing up by the end of the week, and more stuff getting ordered, too!

Stay tuned, folks!!!

how much whp you shooting for?

I'm shooting for over 325 WHP/ 325 WTQ (around or over 400CHP/400CTQ). This is my daily driver. It needs to be civil and run consistently in any environment, able to handle any weather I throw at it, suitable for long road trips, presentable to suppliers/customers/any business associates, etc....Basically, in the next few months the car will be able to out-handle, out-brake, and out-accelerate one of the best cars Audi has made to date, the B7 RS4 (not to mention I'll get better fuel mileage and lower cost of ownership, too).

I move to Germany in Q4 of this year for a two year stint as Product Manager for our European division. This car will sit in the family "Obama-shed" while I'm out of the country. When I return to the US, this car will return to daily driver duty as I plan on buying a 997 GT3 (or similar) as a weekend/track car.

Why are you eliminating the stock PCV?

Only reason I had to do a catch can is because I added 1.7 liters to my engine size and the stock system couldn't keep up. I'd love to have a vacuum on my crank case instead of letting acidic gasses just sit around until they get pushed out by more gasses.

Because I have a direct injection engine. Normal fuel injection engines have a constant stream of fuel rushing over the intake valves to keep them clean. Mine does not. The valves get covered in carbon/oil/sludge and don't function as intended. This leads to misfires, incorrect a/f conditions, less power, etc, etc. Everything is better if I can just keep any of that shit from going back into my engine.

I have a vent-to-air catch can coming. But, what I think I'm actually going to do is install a venturi creating vent tube (installed at an angle) into my exhaust. This way, the scavenging effect of the exhaust will help to “pull” the gasses out. I think I’m gonna try that this weekend. IF that doesn’t work, I’ll do catch can.

I forgot about the whole DI carbon deposit issue.

Those exhaust system vac setups work, but sometimes they actually pull too much vacuum. They sell a vacuum valve that opens up under too much vacuum, being a DD I would urge you to try something with a vac. You could also buy a vac pump if you wanted a really nice setup ( they usually give decent HP gains from making the rings seal better )

The stock PCV only pulls around -5in.hg as it is regulated by a check valve while the standard vacuum system pulls around -20 at idle. I'm currently running about 18-20 peak PSI for boost. Guys with similar size and type of exhaust/displacement/boost pressure (which leads to a similar flow rate in the downpipe) pull about -7in.hg with their dump tubes. What this equates to is a system that actually works BETTER than the stock system (in theory). When boost pressures increase under load, the flow rate in the downpipe increases, leading to a larger scavenging effect, and pulling even more gasses out of the valve cover. So far, this all looks great on paper. The only thing I’m worried about is heat in the downpipe melting components that are upsteam (dump tube line, etc). I’m combating that by using all -10AN stainless braided fuel line and stainless fittings from Jegs, and also mounting the dump tube about 18-24 inches away from the turbocharger outlet.

I’m using good parts that should be able to take SOME heat. Now we’ll see if the rocks that are rattling around in my head are actually worth a damn.

The following is the ULTIMATE fix for PCV/carbon-deposit issues on the 2.0T.

I do not take responsibility for any damage done to your own car (mod at your own risk). Also, this modification is for "off-road use only." Your car will most likely fail any emissions tests if you do this mod.

Benefits:

No more boost/vacuum leaks via troublesome stock PCV setup
No more blowby into your intake/intercooler system
No more risk of catch cans freezing in colder climates
No more dorking around with emptying a catch can

Want to keep this "crap" out of your intake, out of your oil, and off of your intake valves? If not, this isnt for you

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/DSCN1110_zps9e8fac51.jpg

Step One: Order the following: 034 Motorsports PCV Plate (Catch-Can Revision), -10AN Female Plug, -10AN 90 degree elbow, -10AN Female fitting, 3+ feet of -10AN braided stainless steel fuel line, Moroso E-Vac Weld in Venturi Tube, some sort of boost tap (this comes with Forge diverter valves)
Step Two: Remove stock line from PCV system to intake manifold
Step Three: Install "Boost Tap" (sorry, no pictures)
Step Four: Remove stock "front PCV"
Step Five: Remove "rear PCV"
Step Six: Install -10AN plug onto "front" fitting of "front PCV plate". Install 45 Degree Elbow onto middle port of "front" PCV plate. Install 3+ feet of -10AN braided line into 45 degree elbow

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/DSCN1100_zpsd46367db.jpg

Step Seven: Install "front" plate with attached -10AN accessories onto valve cover.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/DSCN1111_zpsd226497e.jpg

Step Eight: Route -10AN fuel line down towards the downpipe (behind the axle and back towards the rear of the vehicle)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/DSCN1113_zps9271b0c6.jpg

It should look like this

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/DSCN1114_zpsfe5dab77.jpg

Step Nine: Create a blockoff plate for the "rear PCV." This will keep junk out of your intake/intercooler(s). This will also eliminate alot of the residual amount of carbon that will eventually wind up on your intake valves. I created my blockoff plate out of .025" aluminum sheeting. I used aluminum because it won't rust/oxidize (not too badly, at least) after repeatedly being exposed to fuel, climate change, salt, etc.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/DSCN1119_zps0b03f032.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/DSCN1116_zps3e5f5e38.jpg

Step Ten: Reinstall "rear PCV" with blockoff plate installed. Be sure to apply some sort of gasket sealant on both sides to help create a better seal.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/DSCN1122_zps61492383.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/DSCN1106_zpse8bfbacd.jpg

Step Eleven: Reinstall engine cover

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/DSCN1125_zpsba436fc5.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/DSCN1124_zpsedaabbf2.jpg

Step Twelve: Get ready to install PCV tube

Picture of what we will weld in (in at 45 degree angle). When the venturi tube is welded in at a 45 degree angle, it will create a scavenging effect and will actually make your piston rings seal BETTER by PULLING fumes out of your valve cover.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/DSCN1128_zps8f5e8479.jpg

Drill hole in downpipe (APR downpipe pictured)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/DSCN1129_zps2e43597a.jpg

Step Thirteen: Weld in bung and install venturi tube

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/DSCN1131_zps79a2130f.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/DSCN1130_zps6ce73d3f.jpg

Step Fourteen: Attach -10AN fitting to Venturi tube and enjoy the hassle-free lifestyle of being a boss....Have a beer for being the badass that you most certainly are.

Clutchmasters single mass steel flywheel showed up today with hardware. It's a few pounds lighter than the stock dual mass (19lbs vs whatever the stock one weighs), and won't have the failure modes that a dual mass has. Personally, I feel that these cars being as heavy as they are and with an AWD drivetrain just aren't fit for aluminum lightweight flywheels.

That's because people are pussies and don't have the brains or the balls to try something outside of the box.

Last year, the pressure line (not the return line) to my catch can froze in the dead of winter and wound up popping my valve cover gasket when I started the car the next morning. Catch cans are cool, but they're a pain ass and not very fun to live with in a place like Iowa where the weather can drop 60 degrees in the course of 24 hours or less.

The aftermarket is probably I higher grade bolt so it doesn't absolutely need the extra length.

Not sure, I'll get out a caliper when I get the stock one out and find out. That's what I was thinking, too.

85 I can see why you would confuse it, I am surprised the factory came with allen heads.

Either the flywheel is thicker or there is more meat in the crank so they take advantage and use longer bolts for a few extra threads of holding power.

Stocks are actually triple-square. I actually love triple-square bolts. Audi uses triple-squares on axles, propshafts, and differentials too.

IDK about enjoying all the different fasteners Audi uses. Only car you will have metric hex, allen, torx and triple square all at the same time.

Update!!!

First I drained the transmission!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/DSCN1139_zps46b1ffcd.jpg

Then replaced the stock plug with one of these guys

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/DSCN1140_zps00667207.jpg

When the transmission was out of the car and on the jack, I refilled the casing with Redline MT90.

Dropped out the tranny. Damir and I started at around 1030 (I was hungover, not sure about him). We had the tranny out before noon. Not bad for dicking around most of the time

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/DSCN1145_zps223d491a.jpg

Transmission successfully removed. Didn't even break anything! Okay, so that was a joke.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/DSCN1146_zpsd40a10a4.jpg

Crappy plastic slave cylinder on the left. New USP metal slave on the right. My only gripe about the USP piece is that it is slightly smaller in diameter than the stock plastic unit. My engine bay is pretty, and I wash it basically once every other week. The smaller slave left me with the feeling that there was a risk of getting water into the bell-housing while washing the engine. What I winded up doing was bastardizing the original rubber boot to place around the metal unit (sort of like an O-Ring, see picture below). No more leak risk!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/DSCN1153_zps91717efd.jpg

Installed along with braided SS slave line from USP.

For 120K, it honestly didn't look too bad. There were a few heat spots on the flywheel, and the OEM disc did look a bit "glazed." But, all in all, not too bad

Been pretty pissed for awhile now about Audi never offering an aux-input for the B7....

So, I ordered the following from CRVW and Carousel (I had to because they were "Audi only parts":

AUX socket - 8J0035475
Connector to AUX socket - 8K0973754
Repair Wires (x3) - 000979009E
RNSE connector assembly - 1J0972977G

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/3-1-13/DSCN1161_zps83d3782b.jpg

Spent about 45 minutes lengthening the repair wires so the aux input will reach to where it will be mounted in the center console. Here's the picture of my half-ass lazy attempt at the custom harness. Everything was soldered (done right) and sealed with weatherproof heat-shrink. Wires were then taped/held together with OEM friction tape to keep everything clean behind the dash/center console. Holy shit I'm rusty with a solder iron....

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/3-1-13/DSCN1162_zps6162f498.jpg

Plugs in nicely to the 32 pin "amp in" connector on the RNS-E and will lock into place (super safe)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/3-1-13/DSCN1163_zps055ab885.jpg

The final product.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/3-1-13/DSCN1167_zpsb8273489.jpg

I have a 12V outlet right next to where I will be mounting this 2.5MM port. I'm currently running a Griffin "slim" 5V USB charger for my iPhone out of this port. My plan is to run a cable that has the 30 pin iPhone/iPod connector on one end and a USB/2.5 MM stereo jack on the other side. iPhones and iPods only have line-level high fidelity stereo output available through the 30-pin connector (this is why I'm not getting the source from the headphone jack. So, it will be one plug in (30 pin-connector) to "tee" into the Hi-Fi output on the iPod/iPhone and will be able to charge as well. I also realized that there is an RGB input on the RNS "Amp-in" connector. I may have to fuck around with that in a few weeks and see if I can't get video to play off an iPod via the 30 pin connector. If I wanted to spend a bit more time on it, I'm sure I could develop a way to charge an iPod while playing music/videos through the RNS-E without having to use some bullshit $400 adapter (ie Kufatec/Alpine). I already have a "cracked" software version on my RNS-E (SW270) so it is able to pull off video in motion without anyone getting pissy. Tomorrow I'll re-program the car to enable the AUX-in on the RNS-E. Although this isn't stock, it sticks the the theme of tricking people who don't know any better.

Also bought some repair wires, socket, and ambient temp sensor. This hasn't been working for a LONG time. This gets fixed tomorrow

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/3-1-13/DSCN1160_zpsb19c757a.jpg

And last but not least, I received in my 25 lbs of walnut blasting media and media blaster hopper/gun from Harbor Freight this week. I'll be doing a carbon cleaning while I have the intake manifold off to install the larger injectors for the big turbo

Showed up at Kevin's a bit before noon. I had to charge my car this morning because the battery is extremely week (about 6 years old). I installed a new Interstate group 48 when I showed up at Lichty Auto. Should be great battery for years to come. Also, the stock battery is a massive bitch to remove from an S-line because of factory strut bar...There's no reason why a battery change should take 45 minutes.

Started playing around with the coding via Vag-com.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/3-2-13/IMG_1286_zpsde9857ea.jpg

As it turns out, when I purchased the RNS-E from Vagnavs it was coded with a cracked software version to enable VIM (SW 270). SW 270 does not allow the Aux in. I had to do some adaptations to a few measuring blocks in VCDS to "force" the RNS-E into downgrading it's version to an older version. Put the 2010-2011 Audi Navigation Disc in the drive, and restarted the RNS-E. It immediately began re-upping the software to the version I needed to make all of this shit work (SW260)

How bout Porsche 997 GT3/GT2 beginning in late 2015/early 2016? That's what I've got my sites set on. That and a new house around that time too. Problem is, it may not be around here depending on where my career takes me.

No time to start new projects right now. I'll be out of the country for two-two and a half years beginning mid August of this year. I'm moving to Germany for a work assignment. Also, you've gotta head North to see high horsepower Euros. I know there's more than a handful HPF E46M3s, lots of Imola Motorsports cars, and lots of Further Performance cars running around in the Twin Cities. Those guys are an absolute blast to party with. I've got a few benchmark highway-rolls set up with some of the Further guys before we start partying when we all meet up in July at Dubs in the Valley (you and Derek should go, too)

If you're looking for 600+ WHP in a Euro, HPF on an E46 is certainly the EASIEST way to do it.

I don't know what the fuck is running around in Chicago. Most of the stuff I see coming from Chicago is a bunch of Golfs/Jettas running bags on 3 piece splits owned by Mexicans.

It's not as easy as you might think it would be with a B5S4. I know guys running punched out blocks with built internals, tuned up 2.8L heads, hotter cams, and a fueling system with alot of head room and it's still difficult for them to break the 500-WHP mark. Once you finally get into the 600WHP range on a B5S4, you start breaking all kinds of shit that you'd never think of. Don't get me wrong, a 500WHP Euro is still a blazing fast car and even though it might not be as fast in a straight line (only thing simpletons care about), it will kick just about any domestic's ass around a track all day long (including your Vette). Most of them (Euros) however, have extremely complex chassis and electrical systems that were never designed to elegantly handle that much power

That'll be fun if you do that though. I have a buddy in Waterloo (Damir, not sure if you know him) who has a built/punched out 2.8L block sitting on an engine stand (already has internals in it) that he's building into a single turbo setup. His most recent engine setup on dual Tial 660s put down a little below 500 AWHP. This is also the same guy that put down north of 400 AWHP on a stock block being blown by K04s.

I'm fully aware of all the pros and cons to these cars from dealing with it for 11 years. Just because I haven't modified my daily driver much doesn't mean I don't know every single detail it takes to make it work. I'm to busy paying off my house to blow excessive amounts of money on my cars I guess. I didn't mean to imply that I would have a 500whp+ b5, but just one that was built up more. I'd only expect a little over 400whp depending on fuel and no meth injection (which is fine by me). I'm all about bang for the buck and as you said it's is quite the challenge after a point to increase power levels while not spending WAY more money or using exotic fuels, block internals, 2.8 parts, etc which I'm not interested in dumping that kind of money into the car. I might do some cheap rods/stock pistons, but that would be it.

The idea of a corvette not being a good track cars is about 180 degrees off though. Go hang out at a road course some time and see who is fastest on average as a group. Go read up on the corner carvers forum about what cars are doing it well on the tracks. I'm not talking about some old waxer driving his vette for the first time, but a seasoned driver. I have lots of times and late model c5 corvettes are the best bang for the buck road race car in existance period. It's hard to beat the power to weight (can get a c5z under 3k lbs EASY), tire size and suspension adjustments you can make on one. As much as I like top gear those guys are flat out wrong when it comes to the thinking an american car can't corner. Look at the latest ring times for normal cars. Note that a lot of the times posted for the cars are on factory tires while most euro stuff has a step up on tires from the factory. Run the same tires on say a c6z or zr1 and try to keep up:)

I might do some cheap rods/stock pistons, but that would be it. It's not that the chassis isn't capable, it's that the majority of owners have different priorities for the cars. I would put a 500+ AWHP S4 (full interior) on slicks/R-compounds up against any full interior Corvette any day of the week.

I've hung out at road courses and Auto-X on and off over the past decade. Not so much the past few years because like you, I have other priorities. I haven't even been to a drag strip in probably 5+ years. Last Road Course I was at was Road America in 2011. I'm actually going to be driving in a Lemons race in Colorado in June. I'm trying to get back into it!

In my opinion, a Corvette on stock tires is pretty terrible. Also, most Corvette owners choose to mod the piss out of engines and leave the suspension/tire/chassis in a factory setup (which makes the hookless tail-wag even worse)

If I owned a C5 (and I've thought about it a few times for the reasons you have listed above), I'd leave the engine basically stock, and tinker with the suspenion/tires while trying to pull more weight out of the thing. The world of Corvette changes when you get into different suspension setups and slicks/R-compounds. The problem is, the majority of Corvette owners out there don't have the same mindset as you and I. For every 2-3 Vettes that you see modified to work well on a road course use, there's probably 50+ flying around on the street with extra horsepower on shitty tires and stock suspension that can't corner worth a damn. That's why my mindset is the way it is.

I'll be at the Ring in a few months. Hell, I'll be living less than 30 minutes from the thing. I'll report back to the group with my new experiences and knowledge (with pictures too!).

Don't get me wrong, I know a vette can be quite the plasticy car, but most of the money is in chassis, engine and low weight. If it's racing we are talking about I'm all about function over form. And for little fyi, my friend almost set the marshalltown go cart track record (held by some tiny open wheel kit car) with his 99' frc vette with little more than 305 hoosier scrubs all around and it did have some extra power which probably didn't do much for it on this type of track. Marshalltown is not quite the track a vette should excell at since it's so short either. Remember it's a full frame car thats really stiff and all the suspension is aluminum A arms with every setting being adjustable. Everybody bags on the leaf springs, but it's a composite transverse leaf spring, but they are super light and add in sway stiffness (and look nothing like a pickup truck spring :))

B5's and audi's in general have too much weight over the nose to be considered an excellent handling car. It's a way better driver/sport touring car to me. I remember the old b5's that dominated the world challenge for 2 years series back in the early 2000's and they were one of the reasons I liked them so much. If you knew all the restrictions placed on the other big engine rear dirve cars to keep things even in the field you would be shocked. Since I had inside info from the LG Motorsports crew and found out those vettes and vipers had to run more ballast weight, restrictor plates, yada, yada. Its the same for a lot of the other big racing leagues today. If you allow the cars to run wide open it would be a slaughter for some.

I had a really hard time deciding to do this turbo kit on my vette since it adds weight and will be a negative for handling. I just like to build stuff and the vette is the only "toy" car I currently have. I can probably count on two hands how many custom turbo kits are on corvettes. It's a mutha to do and people didn't think I would be able to make it work for as little cash as I have into it. The thing is you can't even use the stock suspension to it's fullest extent on the street. I probably won't be able to use the power or put it down well either with the turbos, but it will still be fun as hell to drive. Fact is if you wanted to seriously road race a car you should have a dedicated track car and be willing to spend endless cash on parts in the process. I'm not willing to go to that level so I'll just continue to build my junk and run it when I see fit. I'll quit here as I'm killing your thread :) We might just meet up at a lemons or chump car race then ;)

High Plains Raceway in Colorado just east of Denver. First week in June. Should be fun. I hope they have cold beer up in the mountains.

Also, when I move back to the states I'm going to build a full on fun car. Been kicking around the idea of GT3. Strip it out and beat the piss out of it on the weekend.

I recongnize that the Audis' weight distribution is fucked. But, it's a trade-off I'll deal with for a kick ass daily driver.

Dot 4 has a higher boiling temp than Dot 3, by going to this his brake pedal won't get spongy when driving it harder in as short a time as Dot 3 would. Alot of road racers switch out the brake fluid for a higher grade to avoid that issue.

The car came stock with DOT4. I just upgraded it to Motul RBF600. The brakes are more than enough for the power level I'm running (something domestic auto-manufacturers couldn't seem to figure out until the last 5 years or so).

Some bigger updates...

I will be doing a full carbon clean on the intake valves/IM utilizing a walnut-blaster on Friday while everything is ripped apart.

Replacement parts being installed on Friday:

New dipstick
New IM gasket (this will be installed after my intake valves are carbon cleaned/walnut blasted and everything goes back together)
New Forge "piston style" DV rebuild kit (comes with a new piston and all new o-rings)
New plugs (not sure if I will run my standard "go-to" BKR7E's or something that APR requires for the new turbo)
Oil (Motul 8100 X-cess 5W40, 502 00 and 504 00 certified)
Mann Oil filter/gasket
New ECS-tuning aluminum oil filter housing with drain plug/crush washer
New OEM HPFP cam follower
New HPFP body to cylinder head O-ring
New HPFP to cylinder head bolts
Coolant (will get flushed with G12+ when the turbo is removed on Friday)

Some big updates...

Car is getting the APR GT2871R kit and supporting mods (that weren't already installed) on Friday which includes:

APR Carbonio Carbon Fiber Air Box (already had the Carbonio, this is just a different front bracket to account for the new MAF)
APR MAF Housing (cast/machined/powder-coated. Larger diameter than stock)
APR Turbo Compressor Inlet Hose (full silicon to reposition all ports for new GT2871R)
APR Diverter Valve Adaptor (this will fit my current Forge DV with electronic vacuum controller)
APR Honeywell/Garrett Turbocharger (Ballistic series GT2871R)
APR Oil/Coolant Lines (to fit the GT2871R)
APR Compressor Outlet Hose (the compressor side of the GT turbo lines up differently, hopefully I don't have to modify this too much to fit with my AWE FMIC)
APR High Pressure Fuel Pump (my stock pump had higher miles so I purchased a brand new Hitachi pump and had APR do the rebuild)
APR FSI Fuel Injectors (proprietary APR units)
APR Exhaust Manifold (Inconel 625 investment cast manifold)
APR Exhaust Downpipe (to mate up with the 5 bolt GT2871R)
APR RFD (manifold flap and motor removal, supposedly good for 10+ hp on this setup)
APR Fully loaded ECU for the GT2871R setup with RFD

I need to get some video. Car runs STRONG. 22+ PSI to redline on pump fuel. There's a little bit of a cold start issue. However, that's a small issue to try and fix when you consider I've doubled the HP of the car. Andy and myself will be working with APR this week to get the cold start issues resolved. We're pretty positive we already know what's wrong, we just need them to revise the tune a bit.

Again, a big thanks to everyone! The car has completely been transformed...again. I would highly recommend taking full advantage of APR's Spring into power sale.

Stay Tuned!

It sounds like (and I'll quote my friend) "it's raping the air." Car looks OEM+. DEFINITELY doesn't sound OEM anymore. On pump fuel/meth, 320 AWHP 300ish AWTQ would be nice with ~20% drivetrain loss (400CHP+ on pump fuel).

I coulda bought an RS4 but I went this route instead. This car now has a better power to weight ratio than does a modified RS4 (50ft-lbs more torque, around the same horsepower, car weighs ~400 lbs less). The RS4 has a 10 quart oil pan. This has a 4.5 quart. It takes less $$ to maintain this car compared with an RS4 (parts are cheaper and theres few parts to buy on an I4 compared to a V8). And, on my trip to Dubuque yesterday I got 31 MPG on the highway (not possible on an RS). The goal with this car was to build a higher horsepower, well-rounded daily driver making minimal compromises. It's getting close to where I want it to be.

When I move back from Germany in 2.5 years, I'll buy/build something nutty for weekend/track duty.

Looks good. I really like the style of a b7. Whats the deal with the shop in Peosta? I'm from Dubuque and things change a lot, but I didn't know of them. Is it euro only guys or just friends of yours? Can you log a run of boost response and/or are you going to dyno it soon? Sounds like it would be a fun package as I've watched what they have been doing with the 2.0t, but not that closely. Any way to heat shield that manifold or or apply some reflective matreial around it?

It's on Old Highway road. Owner is Andy Faulkner. They have a 2WD chassis dyno.

I don't have my own copy of vag-com anymore so I can't do a log. I could get one in a week or so though (I need to reflash the car).

The stock heat shield doesn't fit anymore. I need to do something for heat shielding, I'm not sure what just yet.

Looks fantastic. I love how clean everything looks, it looks like it is meant to be there. I am amazed how gummed up the valves looked. Is that the nature of audi's? I know you said you had a catch can prior to your exhaust exit set up.

Speaking of which, how is the exhaust pcv set up working?

Speaking of which, how is the exhaust pcv set up working?

The gummed up valves is a common thing with ALL direct injection engines. The fuel injector on a direct injection/FSI engine sprays fuel directly into combustion chamber rather than through the intake manifold. The benefits of this are increased atomization/distribution of the fuel charge (this leads to increased power/efficiency and lower emissions). The problem is that an FSI/DI engine no longer has the constant stream of fuel rushing over the intake valves to keep them clean. Hence the carbon build up. If you beat the hell out of the engine to get alot of heat in it on a daily basis, it doesn't gum up like this (at least not as badly). Also, if you never take short trips, it doesn't happen as badly. Most of the carbon build up occurs on startup when the engine is cold.

As of 2013, Audi began adding extra fuel injector(s) to the intake manifold to combat this issue (running 5 or 8 fuel injectors on a 4 cyl engine). I know Lexus is going to follow suit in the next year or so (if they haven't already). BMW also plans to add an extra injector to the N54 engine. Every ECOBoost running around today will eventually have this problem (I feel bad for the Ford Techs in 2-3 years, carbon cleaning really sucks and is a dirty/back-breaking job). The big 3 are behind in technology again....not a surprise.

Exhaust PCV is doing it's job. It doesn't smell the best sometimes, but it works.

Interesting, did not know that but I don't usually pay attention to the latest and greatest. At least you do not have to pull the head off to get everything cleaned up.

I like the exhaust pcv. Even though I just set up a new catch can on the fun car, thinking about doing it next winter to aid in cleaning things up in the engine bay.

I need to find a better road to do some more runs. Car is running stronger and stronger each day as the ECU adjusts. Still have a few small things left to do (new VC gasket, new MAF).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Fg6Miarogg

Car runs about 21-22 PSI at redline on pump fuel at 45 degrees ambient. I have a hunch the PSI may go up a pound or two as the weather gets warmer.

Thoughts of a fully tuned GT2871R car after a week or ownership :

22 PSI at 7000 RPM on pump fuel is pretty serious for a street car. Things don't get interesting until about 3500 RPM, at which point, you had better make sure you have some open road in front of you. The way the car is geared, it's incredibly difficult to use the turbo in town. Even with the bigger fuel pump and injectors, when off boost the car actually gets better fuel mileage (which is most of the time in town, and in 6th gear unless you're going like a bat). Lay the hammer down, and the car gets terrible fuel mileage while at the same time putting a huge grin on my face. Hopefully, this holds me over until I buy something nutty for a weekend car.

The APR tune for all ME9 equipped cars all run on requested "load levels" and calculate requested boost from that while monitoring actual boost at the same time. Warmer air = less dense = less power meaning it takes more of it to produce the same "load levels" aka power. Every spring, the car will pick up a few extra PSI. It's just a fact of driving an ME9 equipped car.

Yes, what I'm saying is so completely bass-ackwards compared to old school tuning (old school as much as 5 years ago for most cars). But, you will see more of this in the upcoming years as more cars/trucks continue the switch over to direct injection. Motronic ME9 calculates how the engine runs based on pre-determined load-levels, not pre-determined boost curves/requested boost tables. ME9 is actually a bit of a bitch to tune (that's why I leave it to the pros at APR and don't dick with it myself). This is also why the car is more powerful in about 2-3 days after tuning because the ECU is smart enough to adapt to the tune.

It would have been nice to see any increase or drivability just from the carbon cleaning. That was hindering some serious flow! That buildup also gets in the valve seats and starts leaking past the valves, I've experienced that issue before with a Lincoln that wasn't even DI.

Beat on my car a bit. Ran a good buddy who has a MK6 GTI (TSI Engine) running Forge Twintake and DV, 3" turbo back exhaust, Methanol+ race tune file, STGII+ APR tuning (car put down 263 WHP and well into the 300s on WHTQ). Once the turbo on my car spools up I start to pull away. Obviously, with his car running ~500 pounds lighter, and a smaller turbo, he takes off before me. All in all, it was a pretty good run.
-Dan

Buddy in the car counted off to 3. One the first run, it was straight up. On the second run, Rob took off on 2 and caught me off gaurd which meant my turbo wasn't spooled for over a second while Rob left me (I caught him in the end and was passing him). Overall, not bad considering his car is down almost 500 lbs and having less rotational mass (FWD, about 18% drive train loss versus my 22-25%).

Ripped the car back apart today.

Carbon buildup after about 2,000 miles. I was VERY surprised at this (even though I never really 100% cleaned them, the 90/10 time/benefit rule was at play).

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/DSCN1297_zps40b07364.jpg

It also looks like one of my valve seals is starting to go to shit...I'm not gonna fuck with that for the next few months. I think I'm just gonna have my tuner (Andy @ Performance Tuning in Peosta) throw in some drop-in rods and have a machine shop refresh the head while I'm gone

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/DSCN1298_zpsb50e86f7.jpg

Flow straighteners back in. I have a feeling that part of the problem with the RFD is that the air tumbles into the cylinder (not laminair). This leads to a different combustion characteristic which leads to an incomplete burn.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/DSCN1299_zpsc0d3122d.jpg

That's all I have to say about these

Manifold flaps back in now

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/DSCN1302_zps93d61cf8.jpg

I also re-plumbed my methanol nozzle in at a different point of the intercooler system. When I was injecting into the throttle body plate, I was running into some siphoning issues. Also, the throttle body injection plate sits right right on top of the IAT sensor (which leads to incorrect readings), and it's also on the wrong side of the MAP sensor (the MAP sensor doesn't pick up the pressure change after cooling the air).

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/lensch09/DSCN1303_zpsa670d02b.jpg

Overall impressions: The car runs ALOT better now. The starting/idling issues are completely 100% cured. No partial throttle hickups anymore either. I would not recommend the RFD on a B7A4.

At these power levels, I don't know how that would be considered "stretching." Traction isn't an issue above 60 mph for a FWD car that makes 250 whp (280-300ish to the crank). I'm not sure how lower gearing and less parasitic loss WOULDNT be considered an advantage from a roll. Now, had the race been from a dig, I would have OBVIOUSLY had the advantage (which was why we ran from a roll). I gave Rob the hit, too.

Today, I mixed in 5 or so gallons of Sunoco Blue 110 with some 93 (octane in the tank should be around 100 or so). I then changed programs to the 100+ octane file. APR says it's worth 45 extra horsepower. It sure feels like it

Final test drive tomorrow for the future owner. Fresh cam follow and plugs getting installed next week and then the car is getting turned over the following week.

It's been a good run.

It's Bittersweet. I'll be out of the country for the majority of the next two years (all but two weeks over the next two Christmases and summers). There will be more cars in my life. As my career progresses and I become more highly compensated, I will own nicer and faster automobiles.

Plus, I think I was becoming slightly bored with this one. I can't live with a car for more than 2-3 years.
