*Warning* You really shouldn't read this unless you're as bored as I was when I posted this. It's about a true 'beater' that would be lucky to run a sub 20 second 1/4 mile

So couple months ago I said this thing wasn't worth its own thread.
Well it's 4 am, I'm still wired from all the caffeine I consumed earlier due to my 4 hours of sleep last night then having class from 7:30am-3pm and then doing a 6 hour trip up to Cedar Falls and back to pick up some wheels from Sleeping on here.

So I've been bored and on forums and figured I'll post up my fuckin bad ass DD because I'm that bored.

It's a 1993 Eclipse 1.8L 5spd. The 1.8L is pretty much the DSM's 'civic' motor. Its not uncommon to see them at 2xx,xxx miles. They get 30mpg and have absolutely no power whatsoever. My first car was a 1g 1.8. Bought it back in, I want to say late august? maybe early september.

I bought this for $700 from iowa city, guy sold it to me was a friend of the owner. Owner got parkinsons and couldn't drive it and it just sat forever and finally he said to just junk it for scrap money. Guy whose farm it was on said he'd throw it on CL first to try to get more than scrap. I actually went to Coralville with some friends on a shopping run mainly just cause I wanted to eat at Noodles n Company. Well I decided to check CL for cars since I just had sold my firebird and found this.

here are the pics from the ad. It was FILTHY, absolutely the nastiest car I've ever seen. I saw it and right away before I got out of the car told my friends I don't think this is going to amount to much.

Well as soon as I drove it I was impressed, drove great, engine was nice and quiet. I paid $700 and was on my way. I figured I'd clean it up a bit, fix a few issues it had and flip it. Well I ended up liking it so much I kept it and it hasn't given me one single problem.

I spent the better half of a day going through the interior due to how dusty it was. It's still really bad in the back and if you smack the sunvisors or about any other cloth you still get a bunch of dust.

It had HORRID clearcoat fade issues, the roof was the worst. Unfortunately I ran out of plastidip while doing it so the roof has a thin coat and you can still see the paint issues but it still looks better. It was also missing the whole middle section of the front bumper, so I got a good deal on a decent condition bumper from Brent. Unfortunately it had an accident in my garage and got a gouge spot in it so I just put the license plate over the damaged part. It was bright blue so again I used plastidip.

I also fixed a bunch of issues that aren't really worth detailing them all (some gaskets, fixed some interior stuff, foglights, etc). The factory stereo was complete junk and barely worked so I put in a cheapo $40 headunit and its enough to get me by. Did about all the maintenance I could think of, timing belt/waterpump/headgasket were all new prior to it getting put away.

Here are a bunch of pictures of it as I polished the turd, 10 minute paint jobs haha

Some pre-plastidip pictures, horrid clearcoat fade

Nothing special but found both fogs worked great, just a wiring issue and fixed them.

I spent a LOT of time on the interior as I said, cleaning and fixing little things. Plastics/missing pieces replaced/fixed. Can't stress how much I cleaned it. When I feel like crawling in the back for a lengthy period of time i'll clean it too.

Now I can't even begin to give you an idea of how nasty the engine bay was. SO grimey, leaky valve cover gasket left a LOT of grime on the block. The strut towers were just a dark brown from how dirty they were, I was not even aware there was mitsubishi lettering on the VC due to how filthy it was, I could only see there was a raised platform on the valvecover. I kick myself for not taking a picture of it prior to washing it. I had never actually powerwashed an engine before so I was super cautious and just used cheap degreaser. Worked AMAZINGLY, still dirty with left over oil and whatnot but it looks a million times better
http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/s720x720/310916_2311267134873_1045228797_32718204_446288459 _n.jpg

No pictures of the screwed up exhaust when I got it which just required some welding.

I've really be surprised how reliable this thing has been. I've put a TON of miles on it already and am currently at 182,000 on it. Doesn't leak a single drop of anything, never see it burn oil but I do seem to go through about a quart per oil change. I've driven it out of town a ton, probably 20+ hours of highway driving already on it and it is very far from a highway car.. sits at 3400rpms at 65mph really annoying but it drives and rides super smooth.

The only 'issue' i've had. Not sure what happened, was just driving on a main road in town and boom!. Not sure if I had hit something earlier that made a weak spot and it just took a bit of driving to pop or what. Luckily it had the spare tire so I was good to go and my buddy's work, his bosses know me and hooked me up with a used tire that was still about 70% tread like my other tires for $20 and mounted it for free.
http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/s720x720/314356_2371746766826_1045228797_32769164_212848998 6_n.jpg

The way it is now basically, wasn't clean but I took a picture nonetheless.
It still looks like shit, as I mentioned earlier in the thread all I've been doing is polishing a turd.
http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/s720x720/296616_2407294935508_1045228797_32798221_184602847 7_n.jpg

As it sits I have about $900 into the car now including purchasing it.
Can't complain for how much I've driven it already, and even though they're not very roomy for people in it - with seats all folded down and with the hatch it's done a great job hauling a few things.

I just got back today picking up wheels from Sleeping as I mentioned which will be going on it, but I only bought them for $80 so I can throw my snow tires on it. Even though I only got them for the wheels they still have tires on them that are in fantastic shape.

I haven't taken a picture of the wheels yet, hell haven't even unloaded them. But heres the picture of them on "Sleeping"'s old talon, looked great on the color so i'm sure they'll make mine look better.. but that still brings it back to 'polishing a turd' since its no where NEAR as clean as his.
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a273/SleepingCRX88/P3240062.jpg

I'm just glad i don't have to swap tires on/off the 16" wheels I have on the talon since the allseasons on them are brand new and I'd like to keep them on one car and the snow tires on another.

I'll throw up a picture when I have the wheels on it and I'll probably wash it tomorrow just because I haven't got anything better to do. End of semester with most of my finals being exam based and already completed = I'm bored a lot.

Anyway even though its a full out beater I love the car, its been super good to me and I've been trying to repay it a bit by making it not look like someone pulled it out of a trash the way I basically did when I bought it.

No doubt it'll still end up sold though next year. After next semester I'm switching schools but probably staying in burlington and will be commuting to school which is an hour away. 2 hours of driving every day in this thing would probably get old quick. I'll sell the talon before I sell it though.

Holy fuck long post batman, going back and reading I cant believe how much I wrote for this dumb car. Yeah I'd say I'm bored as shit.

I'll also say I think all the shit I've done to this car is a product of me always having a project with something that I was working on/doing until I finally sold my firebird. Lots of nights I get bored and want to do something on a car so I'd go out to this and find things to do.

I was gonna take it to the Shootout earlier this year and throw a nitrous kit on it and blow the crap up. Unfortunately, my gold digging, old person humping 25 year old little sister decided she needed to get married that same day, so it never happened. I bought the car for $400, Sold it for $650, Bought back for $300, let a friend borrow it for a month for $150, so I figured worst case scenario I could leave it there all blown up and not care.

But anyways, get your Thrush stickers on the bad boy. You're gonna need em >)

Those wheels make the rest of the car look bad.

I still say the 1g is a well built shell. Typically little rust in comparison to other cars of the same year. I had a rust free 91gsx, havent seen a rust free 91 honda civic before.

Very true. I get so upset over my talon's rust even though it also is just another DD, and it's no where near as bad as the 'race car' civic under the car cover haha

I'd love to build another DSM from a shell up some day, I planned to do it awhile back.. but I pretty much have came to the conclusion I don't want the money pit of building a DSM until I have a reliable income and where I'm not also spending so much time with all my classes, especially since I'm about to be moving for a couple years and won't have time/money for a project. If I do anything now it's probably going to be a foxbody/third gen still.

Anyway, got my snow tires mounted and the wheels on the talon. Look a lot better on the talon than my eclipse, but the wheels still look nicer than the talon haha.
It's dirty, hard to keep it clean with these roads right now. I just now did a fast wash and rinse and put it into the garage, probably going to be there till we get a real snow or I sell it for this foxbody I'm debating on.

I have to say, I've never had snow tires before. I'd driven my friend's LT1 z28 a couple times with his but he only had the rears so the only thing I noticed was slightly better traction.

I never realized how much snow tires help with cornering and especially braking!
I went to a parking lot still coated with snow/slush and tested them out early this morning, pretty awesome - almost felt like I was on pavement.

Only downside is the roadnoise, I knew there'd be some but these tires howl so bad at first I thought my rear end was taking a shit haha.
