Hey I just joined up cause i was searching iowa cars and stuff and this popped up in a search.
after writing this i see i made a pretty long intro, didnt mean to lol but since no one here knows me prior to this hopefully you will now know a bit about me :P
i really doubt anyone knows me cause im out in the boonies of iowa way up northwest. i live outside of larchwood a very small town in the upperleft corner of iowa.
i moved out here with my wife about 2 years ago.
im originally from new hampshire.
my wife decided she wanted to be closer to her family so we hunted for awhile and got a great deal on the house out here, especially for me having a detached 3 car garage in addition to the attached single garage so I dont bother the wife when working late.
i work in Sioux Falls which is only about 20 mins away and is where i go whenever I want to see other car guys cause most places in Iowa are a bit far for me.
Only track I've gone to is Grove City twice.
For my cars,
my main car for a long time has been my 1994 eagle talon awd.
I got it not long after my 16th birthday after pestering my parents about it for about a month as it sat outside these peoples house. They said if i got a job they'd loan me the money. So I got a job finally and bought it for $2300 with 72,000 miles on it. Was cheap at the time (year 2000, yeah im old) cause it wasnt running that good. At the time i wasnt very good with cars so I had a friend come look at it with me and we found out it was a bad coil.
Replaced it and it ran great. I didn't know it was a quick car prior to buying it or anything, just really liked the look and that it was AWD.
It was stock for the first year I had it then I found more about dsms and started doing mods, i still didnt know what i was doing and i blew it up running on no tune with the boost raised, only mods at the time were downpipe, exhaust, stock 14b, raised boost, boost gauge, short shifter, underglows lol. i think i might of had a couple other things like intake but its been way to long.
Anyways the car sat for about a year until I finally got motivated to do something with it, lots of reading and I was a much more knowledable person when i went back at it. I bought for $400 a 91 turbo laser parts car and took the 6bolt, it also had a much nicer exhaust than my shitty cobbled one. It was for a FWD but i modified and made it work. it also had a 16g on it so i took it too.
Got it running again and have had it since, pretty set on never selling it. I love it to death. Even though I don't get to drive it much anymore since I have a kid and if I'm not driving to work or back, its usually to get groceries or have a family outing and getting the kid into the car seat in the back is a pain.
I have a 98 intrigue i bought back in like 06 for a daily driver after deciding driving over an hour to school and back and to visit my gf (now wife) in the talon sucked lol. And my wife's parents just gave us their 06 ford fusion so the wife drives that.
Believe it or not the wife used to have a gst, i got her to buy it in 04 when we started dating she loved my talon and still does. I found her a 95 gst for cheap that had bent valves and she had it until we got the fusion we sold it to one of my buddy's from sioux falls so i still see it around.
The talon at one point while I was in college I got it to run 11.9@115mph. My mods at the time were 720cc injectors, exhaust, ebay wastegate, ebay front mount intercooler, my 16g turbo maxing out, i cant remember what psi but i know i was pushing it on race gas still tuning with an sfc and my knock sensor disconnected lol.. it wasnt long, one night a bunch of us were cruising doing pulls and I did one and popped the head gasket.
The car sat for awhile until me and my wife moved here when I finished college, I brought it here and took it apart and found the pistons had some scoring and one piston had a knick out of it.
I pulled the motor and had the block cleaned and all, reused my 6 bolt rods, i sourced 2g pistons. Had the head cleaned up and all, got some crower springs and my hks 264/272s.
Did a few other things here and there, and every now and then when I have extra money i still do something to it.
As of now this is how she sits
1994 eagle talon tsi awd 5 speed - 195,000 miles. she doesnt look like it though, i always kept her clean. has some bubbling by the gas door but thats it.
motor since I pulled it in 2008 has about 8,000 miles on it now.
still my 16g turbo I got back in 2001 lol, she still works great very minimal shaft play.
full custom 3" exhaust with a magnaflow muffler into a dual-tip to give a stock look.
Ebay Intercooler setup still, but a lot nicer than my old one, the old one was rigged up pretty bad and was super big, was more looks. This one is medium sized and does just as good.
1g bov, this car has had a ton of bov's on it lol. When you're in high school and college and have a turbo car, you gotta have a cool blow off valve. I had a bunch, HKS, type-s, ebay bovs, forge. When I put the car back together I had the forge on it vented (stupidly) and sold it and bought a 1g bov again. I think im going to get a tial soon though, I think my 1g leaks.
Tial 38 wastegate
Autometer Wideband
Autometer Boost Gauge
Autometer EGT Gauge
Tuned on Speed Density with jackal and 93 octane.
880cc Precision Injectors
Walbro 255 fuel pump
Comp Stg 3 Clutch
Stock Transmission, still the same one it had when I got it. But in 2005 a college buddy of mine did a bit of a rebuild on it for me. I was having problems going from 1-2 and with 3rd gear all around. Still going strong.
Suspension is Ebay Coilovers.. I bought them back in college but the honestly are pretty darn good. However I would like to get some nice coil overs soon.
Ive only been to the track twice while I've been up here, I only ever get to the track in Grove City, MN which is 3 hours from me.
Best on this setup has been 12.42@110mph. I could tune it aggressively and raise the boost but I'm comfortable as it sits. Not super fast but she's quick enough that in Sioux City when I go up there, shes a great competition for most of the cars people bring out.
Anyway im probably missing some stuff but i still want to get on to my other car.
I decided last year I want to go fast again, but I don't want to make my talon into more of a race car cause its a pretty fun car as it sits and I like it the way it is.
I picked up a 1990 foxbody mustang GT. Just a roller set up for an auto, caged already. No interior except the dash.
I have a 347 that supposedly made 380whp in the car it came out of. I got to hear it run before it was removed, sounded pretty beastly. However they kept the cam in it so I still get to choose that.
I'm still researching to figure out what trans I want to run.
I have the interior about as together as it's going to get. The body is a bit rough paint-wise but im just going to do a redneck paint job with my spray gun out in the open. Not decided on color yet, going to do it cheap-like. Dont intend to spend more than $200 on the paint.. Some day ill have it painted professionally, but Id rather get it running and go down the track in it first.
Goal for the car is 9's eventually. However I'm going to start for 11's and hopefully 10's by 2013 is my current plan. I'd like to run 11's next summer in it. No one likes a bench racer though so i'll stop there.
Anyway so like i said this intro was way to long but at least now you all know a bit about me.
So all my cars in the family:
1998 Intrigue - 170k and going, my daily beast
2006 Fusion - wife's car, and our family car
1994 Eagle Talon TSi AWD
1990 GT Fox - long term project
Anyway I figure this place will give me something to do at work lol + hopefully meet some new friends.
I saw the DSM forum area is pretty dead, is there still many DSM guys on here?
Many people running the foxbodies on here as well? I'm always having questions about mine as I go along and would love expert opinion, and if anyone is up in the area, i have a heated garage and a minifridge full of home made beef jerky and beer and can always use helping hands LOL
