View Full Version : Mustang Engine Swap

I finished this over a week ago but heres a nice photo progress thread on my engine swap. Overall it took me about 5 days to complete. Old engine was a stock 94 Mustang H.O. 5.0. New engine sports 3 bar GT40 heads, GT40 lower intake, Ford Motorsports SVO upper intake, FMS F cam installed straight up, Summit shorty headers, offroad H pipe, SLP catback, and I deleted the EGR and smog equipment. Sorry about the video at the end, I need to edit it but my software is not working.
Just starting, stock engine.

Sounds mean, 5.0 always sound great with a cam. I wouldn't mind finding a 94-95 Stang GT

Thanks. I am not going to lie though, this project had me pissed off most of the time. The car seemed to be working against every aspect of the teardown. I am glad to be done and enjoying the car but have no intention of doing much else on this one for a good long time.

what kind of power or quarter mile times do you think it will do?
86svo9L

I'm not going to make any huge claims on this combo since it is basically a stock cobra engine with a cam and better exhaust/intake/ port matching. The engine in stock form is rated at 240 fwhp so I am going to guess somewhere in the neighborhood of 260-270 fwhp. Still most likely a low 14, high 13 second car. The car does feel a lot more powerful than before but the butt dyno is never a great indicator.

Heres some pictures. Unfortunately since I go to kirkwood someone did a hit and run on my drivers door while trying to park or so it appears so my drivers door is jacked now, and someone also stole the center caps from my rims. Just cant have nice things here. Right now I still have the stock waffle rims on from when it was in storage but I eventually plan on putting the 17s back on. I also have smoked headlights on my car now too.

tell her it will be "more efficient" with it. it sounds like it'll be a money saver, but as we all know, it'll just be "more efficient" at making power.

Nice, I was thinking of playing the "I allready have a blower cam installed so it will not run right without one" line. Maybe a nice combo of the two will work.

I want a KBB over a Centrifugal because this is a car that I drive on the street and is not raced. So the bottom end torque is more important to me. I allready have a car that needs to rev to make power, I don't want a second.

I was looking around and found one at a good price and sold the idea to my fiance and then went and picked it up. Its the 1.5, it came with a 70mm throttle body, a ProM mass air meter, boost and fuel pressure gauges plus lines, cold air intake and filter, FMU w lines, spare case oil and everything needed to have it running today but I cant find a babysitter so its most likely going to have to wait until tommorow.

I still have a few little things to tidy up next weekend, the car is my daily transport so I ran out of time today to make a custom bracket for the coil. Next weekends goal is to get the guage cluster installed, coil bracket fabbed and to tidy up the plug wires and some wiring. I also need to solder the wiring for my PRO M mass air meter and cold air kit.

Yesterday I went ahead and soldered up the wiring for the ProM 95mm mass air meter. The meter has been calibrated with the 4" intake piping on for accuracy. This setup was originally for a 03-04 Cobra. It is all ceramic coated inside and out. The car runs and drives 100% better now, which I didnt really think it could get better until I drove it with this on.

I just happened to find the right deal at the right time. Right now I would much rather be working on the SVO but since the shop fell behind schedule on the paint job (They had a guy quit unexpectedly a couple months ago) I have to engage my talents elsewhere. So when that gets going again I have a whole closet full of parts waiting to go on.

86svo9L
08-30-2011, 06:46 PM
It really was a fairly straight forward swap. I am glad to have had previous experience with boost though, to know little things like hooking up the fuel rail to the boost side. The previous owners setup didnt have that and I had to pick up a fitting. The guy I bought it from said he kept blowing head gaskets and I am pretty sure thats why and I found about 4 different vacuum leaks. If I had no experience with boost I never would have caught stuff like that and fixed it. I also have a smaller pulley for it that is suppose to be for 10lbs but I am leaving it off until dyno tune day.

Placed 3rd in the Sutherland Burnout Competition. I don't feel so bad, the cars who beat me have more then twice the hp as I do, one is pushing over 700 the other over 900. It was a good time, I didn't even expect to place and I doubled my money.

I think it may be a weekend project. I always told myself that when I did springs, new control arms would go in too. But I may just put in the springs. The shop with my SVO really needs to finish that thing, I am spending way to much time and effort on this car and not enough on the one that has a room full of parts just waiting and waiting and waiting, ugh.

Probably the factory "sub." I remember finding one in a camry once. Pretty worthless little things. I have some 10's you can replace it with ;)
86svo9L
09-14-2011, 10:17 PM
Naw, its one of those little cheap plastic enclosed speakers and not wired to the radio. My car already has the Mach 460 so it has 8 speakers and 2 amps from the factory, it thumps pretty decently for stock. I kind of think that it is part of a ghetto rigged security system that someone installed a long time ago and its since been removed. I sure wouldn't mind having a system again though, back in the day I used to run 2 Memphis M class subs backed by a Kicker SX series amp and the SXRC controller. Now I am old and have to carry my kid around so subs are a no go :(

So I know this is odd since I just finished my car for the most part, but I have run into a issue. My other car which is my winter vehicle is still not done at the shop and I have no idea when or if the shop will ever finish, I may have to just go pick it up and finish myself. They had a year to finish it and are well past the projected finish date of June. That puts me with a hard choice, to drive my convertible that I purchased down south while stationed in North Carolina which has never ever seen snow, salt or even winter once the snow flies, or to sell it and buy something that gets around better. If I did sell it all my spare stuff will go with it, T5 with all pieces to convert, FMS G springs(Vert Specific) and a bunch of other odds and ends, Intake, 10lb pulley, 2 spare MAF's (one stock, one Granatelli 85mm), and much more that I am sure to be forgetting. :s Lesson to be learned here, don't ever tell a shop that you will be picking your car up in around a year, they will just park it out back mostly stripped and never finish.

They had a couple guys walk off the job a month before my car was due to be done and havent replaced them so they fell way behind on projects and since I am a friend my car got pushed to the side. I have let him know I need it and they said it would get done in 2 weeks. 2 weeks came and went, then they said 3 more weeks. 3 weeks came and went 4 weeks ago. All that after calling and asking about my car at the deadline and being told another month, so 3 set backs to date...Ugh

Yea, its a really tough choice because I love the car and it is a ton of fun to drive. My fiance thinks we can figure out a way to just share our family car but it would be extremely difficult since we alternate work, school and daycare everyday. If I could find a 500 dollar beater to drive in the winter time I would most likely be all over it, just needs to be safe enough for me to pick my kid up from daycare every day otherwise looks and model dont matter to me.

Yea, Huber has been an inspiration for most all of the 2.3 turbo guys. Little do people know but these engines can actually take a lot more power before breaking than the 5.0 suprisingly. The real weak point is the cylinder head(poor flow and crack prone). If Ford would have went through with the DOHC 2.3 head in 87 instead of dropping the program in favor of the dual plug head(which the program engineers promised more gains than the DOHC team that was competing for production) I think that the following would have been alot better than it is now. Ford had a 87 SVO slated with a DOHC 2.3 turbo rated at I think 275hp, but they were planning on killing the Fox Mustang so the SVO team was disbanded and never put back together when they decided to keep the Fox, mainly due to the poor sales of the SVO. After all over 3 years less than 10,000 were produced.

I really don't plan on heading out there until I get the green light that my car is done, or at least that was my plan. With all the things I have myself into (work, school, kid) I have almost no real way of escaping anywhere for more than short amounts of time, when I am not in school I am at work, when I am not at work I am at school and when I am at neither I am watching my son because my fiance is at school or work. It may be coming down to that. Apparently not a lot of people are interested in a supercharged car, I may be taking it off and selling the car for a bit less minus all the mods. The only guy to test drive it told me about how back in the day he was into 5.0's and knew what they were about. Then after he drove it told me it was to much for him and promptly left. Even without the supercharger it has gt40 heads, an f cam and a ton of other stuff. As mentioned by Stutz, it is really hard to get two cars the way you want.

If the SVO were ever to go to another home, the new owner would have to take my collection of spare parts along. If I get out of the 2.3t game I do not want any of the parts hanging around. I have gathered quite a pile of spare stuff over the last 7-8 years. Seems that 2.3t guys are parts pack rats by nature.

He was an older gentleman and I think the car scared him a bit. It may not be a top end car but from a stand still to a 30 roll nailing the gas any point past half throttle invokes a ton of tire spin, it takes a while to get used to feathering the throttle everywhere.

whatever you end up doing good luck with the sale and keep me in the back of your mind for that blower, because a 67 with a supercharged fuel injected 5.0 would be awesome... does it mount to the gt40 or the stock lower?

It mounts to the GT40 lower. You would need to get sn95 accessories too. The snout support bolts to the coil mounting point so fox accessories would not work.

I am in the same boat with most things. Usually I have to let her go ahead and get something for herself of equal value. I am not even sure if I am going to part it anyhow. If it doesn't sell its really not that big of a deal for me, I will drive it just as much as before and still work on it, slowly adding stuff that catches my attention. When the right buyer comes along it will pass along. I almost do not want to sell it locally, it will be depressing to see it around town.

Today I figured it was about time to get a nice startup and small rev video of my car. On a side note spent most of today buying stuff for my garage :) New 8 gallon 150psi air compressor, hydraulic floor jack, jack stands, bench grinder and tile to finish of the benches. My fiance and I each decided that we would dive into savings and could each spend $1000 on whatever we wanted, for her its house stuff and for me whatever I want in the garage. Any recommendations on things I should not live without in the garage? :D

I really don't know what it runs. If it hasnt sold by spring it is going to the track, with its weight I am not going to guess out of the 13's. My fiance is trying to convince me to keep it and sell the SVO instead, damn woman.
I would think it could run in the 12's with that set-up and auto trans, the tires will limit your ET more than anything but with everything working well with a auto equiped supercharged 5.0 with heads and a decent cam and free exhaust it really should run into the 12's fairly easy

Hard to beat the good ole 15" 28x10.5 slicks you can mount them on a 8" rim but 10" is better. I have a set of slicks sitting around I can sell you dirt cheap if your interested in giving them a shot sometime. Always fun on the street too when you can hook!

Tore the top end of my engine apart tonight. May pull an all nighter working on it for shits and giggles. Actually, I am porting the lower intake and doing inlet/outlet porting on the KB as well, the inlets and outlets are already fairly nice so most likely just some clean up. Some people who checked it out weeks ago decided they want to come see it again, so who knows. They need to make up their mind, I told them if they decided to pass I was going to just keep it for myself but keep the offer open for them, I didn't hear from them for weeks and spent $400 on injector and top end upgrades assuming I was keeping it. I put on a 10lb pulley last week along with 39lb injectors, was happy to ditch the FMU. Car runs much better with the bigger injectors, it does not seem as snappy but it was a night and day difference. I was a little surprised what 2 lbs and bigger injectors would gain, as far as the butt dyno goes anyhow.

04-22-2012, 09:57 PM
I have also been doing a lot of little things, like putting in a battery tray with an over the top hold down, cleaning, regasketed down to the shortblock a few weeks ago. I really want to get it to the track this season and do not want to run into any issues that could have been avoided.

Alright, well as I mentioned in another thread I blew a headgasket at the track. Stopped down to the goody store and picked up a gasket set so she will be back up and going in no time. I plan on taking my time and doing some porting on these heads and relocating the IAT to the #5 port on the intake, probably what caused my blowout to begin with, to much heat and it was not pulling enough timing. Should be in the 12s easily at full weight when all is put back together.
86svo9L
06-08-2012, 11:25 AM

What power level do you think you're at now? How is the t-5 holding up?
86svo9L
06-12-2012, 08:10 AM
Not really sure. I need to get a dyno tune, but generally guys with similar setups seem to put down 350-375rwhp through a T5.
I am running an AODE and it is holding up great but I am going to guess it will drag my numbers down a bit. Nice thing with it being electronically controlled is that the Quarterhorse can manipulate line pressures and shift points to help it out.
Kenne Bell superchargers for the pushrod 5.0 don't really make huge numbers like their centrifugal counterparts but lean more towards low end and mid range.
I was having serious traction issues at the track. If I take this car back to the track it will be on slicks with meth injection. Should be in the 12's fairly easy, full weight.

Yesterday I drove it in to work, I had not re torqued the damned header bolts yet and did not think it would be a problem. Get off work and start it up in the parking garage and hear nothing but CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK echoing through the garage, everyone was staring, then had to drive it through rush traffic downtown clunking it up. It was a little embarrassing, lol. Got it all tightened back up for hopefully the last time.

06-16-2012, 11:37 AM
Any recommendations on nozzle placement? Here are some ideas, it was suggested a while back by Ryan to possibly run two nozzles at the compressor outlet which is my option A.
I have been researching and it seems that the KB likes to have meth injected pre blower for its cooling characteristics, but KB says that if positioned wrong it could eventually wipe out the rear bearings. I have been thinking about running one nozzle pre blower and one at the compressor outlet, but I would need to position the nozzle in a manner that it will not spray the rear bearings or at least keep bearing exposure to a minimal.
Thoughts or ideas?

I recall reading (or hearing from Devils own, I forget which) that meth sprayed in the intake of the turbo can decrease spool. But isnt really worth the risk because you have to use a small enough nozzle the mixture doesn't eat the compressor blade up.
86svo9L
06-22-2012, 12:00 PM
Yea, if I were turbo I would probably run it after the intercooler, more towards the throttle body inlet and well away from the inlet.
Since I have a twin screw and no liquid intercooler it produces a ton of heat soak. A lot of KB guys have had good luck running it pre blower for the cooling effects, and supposedly pick up a pound or two from the better seal it creates.
Thanks for the heads up though, I will keep that in mind if I decide to run meth in the SVO.

I got the system installed and tested. I am missing some blade connectors for the relay and pressure switch so no test drive tonight. Managed to fit it all on the bumper support in front of the radiator, so when the radiator cover is on it is completely hidden. I also wired up a low fluid warning light and a light to indicate when it is operating.
86svo9L
06-24-2012, 09:28 AM
Took it for a test drive. The car feels a lot more consistent over longer drives than before.
Found out why I got the kit for so cheap too, lol. Guy must not have thought it worked. I wired it up how he had it and it did not kick on with the pressure switch. So I tested the pump and relay and all was good. So I undid all the wiring and found that A: It was all black taped together and not soldered and B: The PO had an adapter plug on the bottom of the relay that was labeled incorrectly. So I redid the wiring, checked it for operation through the pressure switch, once verified I soldered everything up and was good to go. Seems you can never trust others' wiring skills anymore.

Imagine a tubular k member, 5.4 DOHC, T56 and an IRS in it. Sure it'd just be a 79 but that bastard would handle so much. The nice thing is anything that was in the Mustang until 2004 would fit in a 79. My first build was a 79 Ghia Mustang with a 351w and a C4 and an 8.8 rear, wish I had never gotten rid of it.

Clutch was not engaging until all the way at the top. Not sure how long it has been driven like that, my guess is a long time. Fortunately a quick pull of the pedal and all is right in the world. It needs a nice buff and wax. Also potentially a new rear bumper.

Stage 1 of removing the scum complete!
Found some interesting things. Removed all of the stickers from it. Only ones I could not take off were from the back bumper. I believe they may be super glued on, especially considering they are covering damage. They just will not come off. Worked a lot of the trouble paint areas with some Meguiers cleaner wax. Top was disgusting, may need a couple more cleaning passes before it looks nice again.
The seats had a lot of tobacco leaves embedded in there. A nice pile accumulated after I was working the crevices on the bottom cushions. Got a lot of nasty buildup off the interior, nothing worse than smoke scum. Cleaned and got the hydraulics operational for the top too.
Spent some time cleaning the engine bay up, nothing too crazy yet.
Next step is to move on to Stage 2! Stage 2 will be fixing/upgrading stuff to acceptable standards.
Sorry for the dark pictures. Lighting in the new garage is a bit sub par at the moment...

Thanks!
Hoping to get it all running and looking decent before spring hits. Wife has been upset since I sold my old convertible. We used to put a car seat in the back for our son and go on family cruises with the top down. RX7 obviously does not quite allow that. So this car is more for the wife than it is for me, I still have the RX7 to get into trouble with.
Maybe down the road as things start to crop up I can swing in upgraded heads, intake, etc. Right now my directive has been to get it looking good and mechanically sound.

RX7 is not going anywhere, lol.
It just happens to be in storage until the snow is gone.

Well have been cleaning the Wife's new vert up some more. Picked up some new to me rims and tires for it today. That means the RX7 is getting the Tri-bars!
Did not take it out of the garage for good pictures yet. Maybe sometime this week if it gets nicer. Need to wash it again and another coat of wax...

Pulled it out of the garage for some quick pictures. Looks much better without the tribars!
