welcome and thank you for your service. hope your recovery goes well. there is a few rotary guys on here as well as some drifters. I have lots of knowledge on pulling the rotary out and putting a v8 so the other guys will have to help you :) You'll probably be fine as long as you keep the boost low.

i deleted your double post

From reading of Phish's woes with his turbo RX-8 I'd be pretty damn weary of boosting it.

Welcome to the board! Good to see our membership is growing.

I never really rad this post untill just now. Cant believe that i really missed it. Dont let my issues with a rotary stop you from boosting yours. It all depends on what you want and what your willing to risk. The reason i have had and am having my issues is because the path i have chosen to take in boosting mine. I am one of the select few trying to get major power out of a larger turbo and pushing the limits of the renisis to do so. There are plenty of kits out there that will make decent power (not sure of your power goals) and quite reliably if you keep the normal vehicle maintnace up.

Once the RX8 is boosted its a blast to drive and a totally differnt car. ALOT of fun to drive. I guess if you want any info ask away i would be glad to help you if i can.

Also, the link that was posted up about hinsons swap kit, has been "close to completion" for the past year. Nonone sells a swap kit yet that i know of. Its possible to swap out to a v8 if you would like however, i really dont think ther eis a need to if its a perfectly good renesis in it. I have thought of it quite a bit, but just cant seem to pull the trigger on doing it. Alot of work and custom fab work, but can be done.

I dont know your past history with cars or how in depth you have looed into the different options of kits for the rx8. There are a couple of differnt options for the greddy kit out there also. The greddy kit is the safest way to go as far as reliability goes. WIll give the car a little bit of pep without having to worry to much about longevity. Its the most reliable and safest kit on the market.

As far as install goes, never installed that kit, but i am sure it woudl not be to difficult. It places the turbo on the bottom side of the motor and is basically right off of the manifold. I hear getting the turbo physically up into place is the hardest part. Are you looking for someone to do a turn key install for you or someone to jsut guide you along the way?

Also, there are a few things with the motor that your going to want to improve and change if your going turbo. (some if you even staying NA). A few weak link supporting mods that would be really smart to change out. Again dont know how much you have looked into these motors or these cars.

The rx8's suspension was made to stick and grip... not slide. You can make anything slide, jsut was made NOT to dothat from the factory lol.

I dont have much experience with rotary....i am pretty car savvy though...kinda lookin for a turnkey install but id also like to be there to learn everything i can thats why i have stayed away from speed shops for now...just lookin to pep the torque curve and go sideways..ill do what i need to...i kinda have a skys theimit budget...due to my job an the va is hittin me with disabillity for being injured in afghanistan

Well i would tackle the install if your interested. You can PM me if you want to talk more about that.

There are a few main kits out there for the RX8. Made by Greddy, Esmeril Racing, and Turblown Enginering. There are also a couple super charger options from Petit racing. If your not looking for much. The suprcharger may be the way to go. Its the MOST reliable out of all the kits and still puts down decnt power. If your wanting to go turbo. Greddy is the cheapest and most bolt on freindly installation but adds the least amount of power. There is an upgrade kit for this turbo system out that replaces the trubo with a larger one and a couple other componets. This is what i would suggest if your not looking for anything crazy. Look into the Greddy kit with the "mazdamaniac" upgrade. If you cant find any info on it, i will get you a link to it.

The other two kits are for higher horse applications and more of pushing the limits. Not quite as user friendly, but you can go ahead and give them a look also.

I don't necessarily think you'd need to turbo the 86, those with a built 4A can be pretty mean since they are so damn light.

When you comin home?

There is a used Greddy kit forsale online with the new "Mazdamaniac Upgrade" with it. So used kit with new turbo couplers and what not. I believe the upgraded turbo is the 3071R. Anyway, asking $3500 i believe.

And because you showed intrest in drifting and turbo charging your RX8... This is Al's car. Motivational picture I suppose

does the car have to be that low to drift? i would think it would get beat up being that low

Phish
08-22-2011, 09:45 AM
It looks pretty beat up to me lol. I wouldnt think it would have to be that low. I personally am not a fan of a car that low anyway. Dont like the looks, but what do i know.

Chase
08-23-2011, 09:39 PM
The cars are very low yes. Drifting like road racing requires grip and a proper suspension setup would be ideal, but the majority just make them stupid low because its fun (I do this too).

The damage is from drifting. Eventually you hit hay bales, cones or other cars... I've seen that RX8 his a boulder. The black supra behind the rx8 was hit by the rx8 owners previous car (they are brothers).

Its all in good fun. I was excited cause the thread originator showed interest in drifting. We need more people to get involved as oppose to drifting around in small parking lots on the weekends.

martinRX8

Yes i agree with rx7project....where is a good place to practice other than the industrial area out by 16th street in cr at 1am

martinRX8
08-23-2011, 11:59 PM
Im not one to play on the street so i keep it in the empty parking lot....the crpd doesnt seem to mind i think its cuz they havent actually caught me doing it...they smile and wave when they drive by and im just sitting in the parking lot practicing shifting and footwork with my car shut off

Chase
08-24-2011, 07:13 AM
You'll learn more in one day at the track than you would in 3 months going to parking lots on the weekend. If your going to do it, do it right. :)

This has me confused. Grip? Setting up your suspension to give you less traction than stock seems to be the polar opposite of road racing. You have to turn, other than that I dont see the connection.

Chase
08-24-2011, 09:23 AM
You don't neccesarily want less traction. You want the car to carry its speed and be controllable/predictable. Drifting isn't just about whipping the rear end around.

black88gt
08-24-2011, 09:50 AM
I'm aware its more than whipping the rear end around, but to say you want grip like a road course is quite an overstatement IMO. Predictable isnt tough unless you do goofy shit to make your contact patch smaller than stock.

Chase
08-24-2011, 06:05 PM
I am saying, you want grip. I'm not suggesting you put slicks on a car and try to drift it. But altering the suspension for the sole reason of inducing oversteer (IE: less traction that stock, as you put it) is not a good approach

A setup that gets you around a track fast will be great for drifting. A good setup will be free on entry and overall be pretty loose, using the throttle to rotate the car is not uncommon.

This set up will be much better than a huge rear anti roll bar and 60psi in the rear tires.

Don't picture a Daytona Prototype but rather a miata on street tires that someone takes to the track on weekends.

Welcome back to the good ol USA and thanks for serving. I was at Ft. Gordon for over a month (even thogh I was in the Air Force), very nice base. I hope you recover fully from your injury.
Love the RX8. I had a stock 80 RX7 when I was in the military, very fun car.
