I havent really posted up anything in here yet so heres a progress thread on one of my cars. The SVO should be done in around a week. Right now it is at a good friends shop in Pittsburgh PA he is undertaking the huge process of restoring the body on this car to better than new condition. It will be redone back to the original Oxford White/SVO color scheme.
Last time I had it to the track it was in close to stock condition, mods at that time were Manual Boost controller set to 18psi, 10* initial timing, compressor bypass valve, E6 turbo manifold, flowmasters and a K&N on the VAM. I took an easy on it since the next day it was road tripping to Pittsburgh and I was scared of breaking it, but ran a 14.5@98mph with a 1.9 60ft, I think all out I could have slipped into the upper 13's but who knows as far as I am concerned its a 14 second car until I run it faster. Since then I have installed a BoPort 1.9 cam, hi rev spring package, gutted upper intake, knife edged lower intake, 60mm throttlebody conversion, updated the sensors to SN95 units. Once I pick the car back up I have a set of 72lb injectors, a tube header, ported head, Holset HX35w, spec stage 3 clutch, and a stinger PIMP MS2 plug and play ECM. I am planning to switch out the factory 2.5in into dual 2.25in exhaust for 3.5in into dual 3in once I get the new turbo and FMIC on.
Heres some pics.

Also along with the paint, a new SVO repop fiberglass hood, all new NOS SVO headlights(Cost a small fortune and my left arm), new repop SVO tailights, Torque box and control arm reinforcements (Battle boxes), subframe connectors, new weatherstripping all around, new window channel runs, outer window moldings(dew wipes), new body moldings and rocker panels are all being put in at the same time. The factory hood was slightly tweaked so I figured if I needed another hood may as well try and save a little weight on the front, the SVOs allready have around 52/48 so if that can be improved I will try.

Cool car, pretty unique. 14 isnot bad at all considering how close to stock it was.

Thanks. With my luck after I get the engine finished it will still only be a 14 second car, not because of the car but because I suck at the track, only been twice. I'm not sure what it will run after these mods but most SVO's with the same modifications are in the low 12's, but that being said there are some guys running stock head and turbo in the 11's with who really know what they are doing and can push the envelope without breaking stuff. I tried picking a combo thats been proven on a lot of cars to be dependable and quick although lag will be more noticeable, full spool for most with this combo around 3200-3800, full spool stock T3 turbo around 2500 for my car.

Well, finally some updates. I should be heading to pick this car up sometime next month, unfortunately since the shop fell so far behind on the project I found out just a couple weeks ago that it needs a new header panel, which are impossible to find. So I found a place that makes new ones to order with a 5 week wait time, so right now the front bumper cover at least is on hold from paint until this piece gets finished and shipped, wish I could have found out about this part oh say a year or more ago...Anyhow enough of the rant here are some pictures, from the work I do see it looks really good and they assured me that with this being long overdue that the car would get alot of extra attention. They were able to fix the broken tabs on the bi-wing and the sag. The fiberglass hood looks very well fitted too.

I cannot wait to dig into this thing in the spring. This car is the reason I just don't ever get excited about the vert. When I would drive both of them on the same day I would hate driving the vert because it felt like a bloated luxo cruiser vs. a go-cart. There really is that much of a handling difference and feel between these two cars. I axed the Holset too, sold it and decided to go with a 50 trim T04E, the Holset would be a blast I am sure but I also drive this thing on the street and not hitting full boost till 4k is just not worth it.

My main issue is most likely tuning, I have a quarterhorse but beyond changing the injector sizing and simple changes that I have read about, I am lost, so it basically has the factory tune changed for injectors. I really want to get a dyno tune but nearly every shop I have called that are local have failed to return my calls and emails.

snickerlicker
11-18-2011, 08:27 AM
Yeah you might have to travel some to find someone to tune with the quarterhorse. Defintely some extra power available with a tune.

86svo9L
11-18-2011, 08:32 AM
Yea, in the spring if I can squeeze it in I want to put on a meth kit before a dyno tune, but I may be in over my head timewise with what I have planned on the SVO. Since the SVO has a closet full of parts to include a portion of our small shed my fiance has made it clear which car is getting worked on next.

Just got off the phone with the shop. The photos I just posted up are about week old, but there should be some new ones this weekend. They finished painting everything except the front bumper and are going to start the finishing process and reassembly soon.
Edit- Called SVPU to check up on the header panel and it is ready to ship, they are trying to find a shipper that is reasonably priced for me at the moment. Should be out the door next week.

Thats a beautiful SVO. SVO's always need some love, problem is they are high dollar hookers so you can't always afford to give them love all the time, at least in my case. I've owned mine for 8 years now, and its needed a paint job since well before I have owned it. Unfortunately when I was younger it was never within my financial reach to drop the money into it that was needed and I didnt want to half ass it. Now that I am older and have my finances in order its nice to get it taken care of finally. To be honest I really think it would have been a lot cheaper for me to have just sold this one and purchased a nice one but I am to stubborn for that.

SVO1
12-22-2011, 06:39 PM
I hear that. I bought mine in 96, it needed paint then as well due to a partial repaint from it having a bra, and that repaint cracked.

86svo9L
12-22-2011, 08:33 PM
Yea mine was the same way, it had a cheap repaint sometime in its distant past and the paint was covered in tiny cracks. It wasnt noticeable from a a few feet away but up close it looked horrible. Hopefully when spring rolls around I will have this engine finished up. Then I will have an excuse to clean up the bay and hide all the wires. It will be nice to just enjoy the car.

I think a major hurdle is that it was all verbal. This was going to be a side job with a completion date of Late June, he had over a year from drop off to complete it by June and since me and this guy had been good friends for years, and hell I served 2 of my 3 deployments with him, I really did not think any of this would go down. When I dropped it off he checked it out and pointed out all the areas he would need to fix and said 3-4k max not counting parts to sand/repair/paint/roll fenders. I put more than 2k into parts throughout this so he would not have to cover any of the build cost besides paint, the shop now wants 5k for the job since it at some point became an official on the books job and I got charged their hourly fee/job cost. If I had been a normal customer that had my car worked on by employees during work hours this would have been completed over a year ago. The project was never looked at as an official paying project so they never focused on it, every time I tried getting updates on progress I got the whole "We are focusing on paying customers vehicles and are swamped". It wasn't that big of a deal for me since I was getting "hooked up" to wait longer. Now that I am an official paying customer and this has taken in excess of 18 months I am pretty pissed.

not make this worse i wish you the best of luck. I know good show quality paint jobs can be excess 5000 or more but that seems really high to me. Anyways I took my car into a buddy of mine that has a shop in Des Moines and he did all the body work and rust fixes and paint for under $2000 given, my paints is not perfect but, he did a really good job. You can see pictures of my car and the $2000 was with all body panels off the car when painted but again just my two cents but otherwise you car is looking good

Well lucky for me I have all the documentation from receipts to correspondence between myself and the shop. I looked up the repair quote law and it is in fact 10%. I just left a message for the shop that basically they are charging outside of the quote, I was never informed and that it is not lawful and reminded them of the extreme delinquency of the delivered product. Also informed them that a transport trailer will be there to pick it up on Jan 19th. So no matter how this goes down I will have my car around Jan 20-21 already have it scheduled and paid for. Now I await their response.

Starter works from what they have said it just cranks. From the sounds of it it is ignition related, maybe the TFI or PIP went to the wayside. Its hard to tell what could have went wrong in the last 18 months. For all I know they were out beating on it and blew it up. All they have told me is it will not start and just cranks through text message so I sent one back explaining what could be wrong and tried to call. They wont answer the phones at all when I call, I am assuming they just don't want to face the music. Pretty much have been stonewalled since I told them a trailer would be there to pick my car up on the 19th whether it was done or not.

Well I just got off the phone with them, I blew up his phone and we finally had the good long conversation that was needed to get everything aired that needed to be. From what he told me it sounds like the TFI, car has fuel pressure and the ecm checks out and all the relays are good, just is not getting spark. We renegotiated the price based on all the issues I have had and the tardiness so it got dropped down to 3k. I am glad they are making it right.

will it be a ford motor? if so staying 4 cyl turbo or going sbf?

86svo9L

Staying 2.3, keep it true to its roots. I already have a BoPort 1.9 cam, big throttle body, 72lb injectors, ported lower intake, gutted upper, etc, etc. Basically the only thing left for me is head and bigger turbo. I really want to pick up a esslinger d port and PTE 6262. I have a Garrett T04E for it, may run it for a bit to see how I like it. Also I have Brand new 03 Cobra front control arms(Bought them 6 years ago for a rainy day) 94 Spindles, 99+PBR calipers and eibach springs. Still want to put in uppers and lowers in the rear. This is all in the distant future, no idea how long it will take to complete all my projects.

86svo9L
01-23-2012, 05:18 PM
The SVO's share the same track width up front, Ford just ran a different offset rim to compensate. MM actually sells their 94-99 control arms as SVO replacements along with a bushing insert to retain factory brakes. The SVO's have a lot of crazy non interchangeable stuff, kind of sucks when you are trying to find it all or figure out how to get things to work.

Car is home! Havent been able to see it really yet. It ran into a snag, the shop put a battery the size of a motorcycle battery into it so it would not crank :s. Ended up having to jump start it to get it into the driveway. First thing I am doing when I get home is new battery.

86svo9L
01-24-2012, 07:51 PM
Put in a new battery and it started just fine. Alternator is not charging and for some reason my engine bay wiring is a rats nest now and some wires have open soldered connections hanging around :(. It got dark before I could start tracing what the hell all went on in there but its not pretty thats for sure, it seems the steps they took to trouble shoot did not go well at all, also my coil cover is missing along with the dome light. Drove it to the gas station since it was riding E and went to turn and the steering wheel turns half a revolution before actually doing anything for either direction, almost bit the curb when I turned the wheel and realized nothing was happening then kept turning and turning and finally some action. Tomorrow I get to find out what the hell is up with all this shit. Called the shop and my dome light and coil cover should be coming in the mail sometime soon, so they are taking care of that, they have no idea whats up with my steering though. Just to add to the irritation I have to take all the tires off because they mounted them backwards and put them in the right direction.

Thought I would show some up close pictures of my "Awesome" paint job. I am seriously considering taking this to the BBB. I drove it to the gas station one time to put gas in = 3 blocks and this happened. The screws holding the spoiler were not tight so the couple bumps I hit cracked the crap out of the mounting points. I also am tossing in some pictures of just general shit, the paint runs are hard to get a good picture of but there are at least five I have found that are fairly noticeable, the paint lines are really shitty and the paint is noticeably thin in some areas. To top it off found out that my brake lights do not work, got under the dash where he was testing wires from and several are broken off at the terminal including the one to the brake switch :(

So my a.d.d kicked in today. I was in the middle of tearing the convertible apart and decided to swap out battery hold downs since the SVO's hold down would work better on the vert and vice versa. Next thing I know the SVO's wiring harness is taken apart back to the firewall and all ready for a tuck. Only thing left to do is solder in some longer wiring in a couple spots, put the wiring in the fenders and it will be done. Looks quite a bit better, I will get some pictures when it is complete, looks like a disaster right now though.

Got a few little projects going. Been porting out an E6 Turbo Manifold to swap in place of the current header and been working on porting out the current intake a little better, my old port job was a little rushed and can use some cleaning up. Worked up a better evac system as well. After that I will be dropping the SPEC Stage 3 in that I picked up from Ryan. Hoping to track it this year, and at least 13's.
Next winter I have some 72lb injectors, a ported head and a standalone for it, still have to get a turbo that will fit the power requirements a little better. I am up for suggestions. Thinking along the lines of a GT32/35 or Precision 6162.

It is a SOHC 2v engine. The head design is not nearly as efficient as todays DOHC designs and is the major restriction with these engines. The factory turbo short block can hold gobs of power though. I have been thinking about picking up an Esslinger Aluminum D port head or porting out my spare along with bigger valves. So when all is said and done if I go the stock head with porting route hopefully peak flow of around 200cfm, if I go with the Essy I can expect around 240cfm peak unported.

Car is going back to mostly stock. I am kind of sick of dealing with issues and miss the fuel mileage and reliability I had before dumping all these parts into it. I have decided that what I have wanted all along was a car I could take out and beat the crap out of, run over cones, whatever and this is not that car it is to nice and rare. I do have a rusty shell that was JY bound that is now going to gain new life and floor pans. It will slowly become a spray paint black brute that is going to be used for auto x and the occasional drag race. For lighter weight and to re use all these parts coming off the SVO it is getting my spare 2.3 stroked out to a 2.5, boport cam, ported head along with a ported turbo manifold and precision t3/t4 (drag and long tracks) or a quick spooling IHI for short tracks. I have an accel dfi that is going to be used for fuel management. All these parts I already have so that leaves a transmission, rear end and lots of suspension.

When will this car come alive? I have no idea, time and will power have been getting severely slim these days. I gave myself a $3500 budget for the build and the wife approves, so all is well.

I don't know about that plan. you could take a break if your tired. work out the bugs and buy nice parts and don't go overboard and you can still have fast and reliable. drifting or offroad stuff would ultimately tear the car up but not autocross and drag if you build it right.

Beaters have their place too but they also have downfalls, mostly in that your now messing with and maintaining two cars and not as fun to cruise around in or take to meets, etc .

Not a terrible idea. Just a bit frustrated, picked up a crack the size of the grand canyon in the turbo header today.

I am going back to a log style header. No more leaks to chase down and the chance of cracking is much lower.

Yea, if the turbo is not supported with any brackets, etc a tube header will crack all the time. Cast is best or sch 40 weld els with good tig welding. Support the downpipe and add flex to keep manifold load down.

AutoMods

sometimes there are cast styles available that flow like tubular , like this mitsu one

Us 2.3 guys are short on options as far as manifold choice. Its either dump a grand on one or spend 300 for a tubular that will crack. I will get some flex put in at the end of the downpipe and the support bracket will be put back on with the stock manifold. I spent about 6 hours porting out the stock E6 manifold per suggested guidelines, it should flow really nicely once installed.

Yea, I'd give up a little flow for reliability

Your header stock location? What flange?

86svo9L
07-19-2012, 09:39 AM
Stock location T3 flange. I have 2 spare E6 and an E3 hanging out for use all with T3 flanges.

I put the ported E6 on tonight and went out for some low boost (9lb) runs to see how it ran. I think that header was the root of most of my issues. Car runs much better and pulls great. I am very pleased with the result.

Not yet. It is going to be a winter project. My main goal for this summer was to just enjoy the car and not fiddle to much. Also this winter a Quarterhorse, 72lb injectors and a few other goodies are going on.

I can't believe how clean your engine bay is. The only SVO I have experienced was a rats nest of shit under the hood. You have a really good looking car there.

Thanks! I spent a ton of time hiding wires inside the fenders and soldering. I couldn't stand the mess that came from the factory, factory fix for the rats nest was to put a cheap plastic cover over it.

Always nice when they do. I have always been a fan of Camaro's and Firebird's. Owned a 86 Iroc Z that was fully restored with 70,000 miles for a few years, was a great car that I have regretted the sale of. Mustang's just have been at the right place at the right price.

I had a 92 RS before I got my LT1. It was ridiculously clean, I wish I never sold it. I don't hate Mustangs by any means. I want to someday have a Notch, I think they are way sexier than hatches when done right. I can see it in my mind....:684:

It's just too easy and fun to poke at the Mustang guys. Especially Snickerlicker, he moved out of the state because he's afraid of the almighty LT1!

Forgot to ask who's SVO you have seen? I know of a couple SVO's around but have not ever seen another one running and driving. I could probably toss some pointers/parts their way if its a stalled project.

It's no big deal. From my understanding there was not a whole lot that it needed? I know from what he mentioned there was wiring issues and the head was being swapped. Head swap can be done in about 4-5 hours from start to finish and wiring about a week of afternoons if you have a spare harness, I used a ranger harness I got for next to nothing to splice in new connectors.

If I remember, Luke bought a Ranger cam, down pipe, ported upper intake (?), gears and maybe a couple other things I'm forgetting that Alex (new owner) got when he bought it. I don't think he ever bought a new head for it. It should be a fun car if Alex ever gets it running. I think it's been non running longer than the LT1 now. lol

Heres a quick video of the car. Took it out for a 18lb run today since the stock clutch has been holding up so well lately. Stock clutch of course showed its true face and slipped like crazy. Low boost till winter when the spec stage 3 goes in it looks like.
