View Full Version : street drag radial tires, what do you run? what do you like?

looking for something that will last at least 7k miles. anyone know how long the nitto nt05r will last?

considering gforce drag's, nitto 555r also

I figure the mickeys don't last long enough so I rule them out. I already have 15" MT et street bias tires but I save them mostly for the track. These will be for my 17" mustang rims.

I know nitto 555r's take a lot to heat up which kills the life if you race on them often. My buddies 03 cobra had them in 315s and they were still pretty garbage on the street. I know fiddy has the nt05r's. The bfg dr's with the smooth spot in the middle are also pretty worthless from the many times I've seen them. I really did love my MT Radials on the street.

I wish rob was here, cause I think he tried damn near every tire cept the goodyear dr and the nt05r. I know he wasn't too happy with the hoosiers he bought either.

You'll have a hard time getting 7k miles out of an nt05r or mt et street. 0 treadwear rating on both. I've never used the nt05r's but as I understand it they.are very sticky. I've used the mt and they pretty impressive.

The 555r's are not nearly as sticky (100 treadwear) but will last considerably longer and wont kill you in case of a light mist.

Never used the hoosier or bfg's.

The nt05rs haven't lasted on my car as long as id like them to but the traction trade-off is well worth or....and they were 100 bud cheaper then mickeys.....my bfg gforces I had lasted forever and hooked decent though...not as well as the nt's but better than 555rs

I have the toyo TQ's on the vette and most guys like them. I'd say the mickys, M&H and NT05's will be the sticky ones, but won't last very long. I'd run the nitto 555 or toyo dr's for the street. They feel more like a street tire also. I think the toyos come with 6/32 tred depth as nittos are 5/32. Any of these will be worlds better than the old hocky pucks you have on those wheels now.

I've had the BFG G Force sports and the KDWs on my TA. Liked them both, the G Force Sport lasted a little longer. Normal street driving though.

Since you have drag tires I'd just get the nittos or toyos so you have something that is fun to drive around on. You could even use something like toyo r888's, nitto nt01's, 555r2's, or something (road race/autox type tire) as they still hook well on the street and corner very well. Run them in front and back then you can still take turns in the car.

I presently have just the common nitto 555 (275/35/18) and 555R (305/35/18) on my car for dd purposes. I like them. My car makes a decent amount of torque so wheelspin is inevitable, and I can't really say I've ever tried to race anyone from a dig on the street, but that being said they hold their own.

thanks guys. probably won't be buying front tires ed. Just saving for rear end and/or forged motor. Expensive to make your car really good at both drag and cornering. I don't like spending money on tires but now I'm at the point were I can't even go to full boost in 4th gear without slipping.

Nice thing is that you have 17's. Average about $100 less per tire than 18's for some unknown reason.

Well I ment you could buy front ones when what you currently have in front wear out. Last I checked the toyos were not a bad price either.

not a bad price, do you know if the toyo's run narrow? My rear fenders are borderline with the 275's. I've heard the nitto 555r's fit. I've heard the MT street radials are a wide 275 and they rub the fc rx7 rear fenders.

Most DR's run wide side vs. standard radial tires. I think the MT's will be a little wider though. I don't think they are much different than the Nittos in width, but can't say for sure. They are 6/32 tred depth so might last longer. Nittos 555r's are 100 tredwear where the toyos are 0 so they are a little newer and softer compound. I like them on the vette. They still take corners ok.

I'm still going to have to fight for the bfg tires...you will be disappointed in the traction on 555r or toyos...and I think I got mine on ebay for around 300 a pair

I'll take my 2+ years i'll get out of my 555r's in exchange for some initial street traction. They hold on in 3rd. Occasionally 2nd.

Ha something i dont need to worry about.. dont even know what torque is.

I think alot of people jsut have a brand preferance one way or another for whatever reason. Plus every car and setup is a little differnt as far as traction and wear would go. It would all verry from auto to auto and the only way to know what works on a specific ride would be to try it and see how things go.

Phish-You of all people should know how the Mickey's and BFGs work. I believe we've spent many a night hunting down Stangs and Vettes on the street.

I'd say the bfg's hook better than the nittos for sure and might be better than the toyos also, BUT they are very gooey in the sidewall and don't tend to feel really stable at high speeds. Nothing to worry about, but the other tires will drive more like a street tire. Ryan had a set of 4 bfg's on his talon and should know what they feel like. I know different car/different size tire, but a little bit of relevance to the topic. If he wants to hook it on the street really bad run the dang et streets.

I had the toyo r888's on my car and they are some wide puppies. I liked the way they looked thought. They definitely road rougher than probably any drag radials due to being a road course tire, but they made my relatively worthless turning car a blast. Didn't last very long though.

went with the 555r, just delivered today. just went with them as they were a bit cheaper and run a bit narrower so I know they will fit.

I hope they are quite a bit better then my old tires. I heard the 275 mt's were so wide they stick out on the rx7. Was going to go with the bfg's but the only 275 17" is their old drag pattern, looks ugly and not sure if it hooks as good as their new pattern.

I measured my nitto's and they were just under 10.5 inches sidewall to sidewall unmounted . Looks like those r888 are over 11 inches.

I don't get what you are saying. You can't have the best of both worlds. If you want the best hooking DR's you will sacrifice cornering for the better the hook. 555r's are a great street compromise. He's got track tires so why not have something that lets the car drive almost like normal rather than a mushy turd.

He isn't going to be autocrossing the damn thing, from what I understand he just wants a good hooking little longer lasting street legal tire so he can play on the street...and imo the 555r is like going to a whorehouse to get a hug

Well I think my car weighs in around 2900lb with the cage so thats about 600 pounds lighter than a camaro so the tires might hold a bit better on my car. turbo hits smoother than the nitrous too. i'll give them a try, not the end of the world if they aren't good enough.

i just think most of us are on here are of the mind "do it once, do it right", and just want to make sure Ryan makes a good choice. i suppose the mentality isnt as important as with something that wears out as quick as tires. cant wait to see it out again Ryan.
