So, I'm trying to learn some things about the LS motors... seeing as I'm planning on buying a CTS-V if I can find one.

A lot of people were trying to say the LS6 was a better motor and easier to mod and whatnot, but I didn't get it.

It looks like the LS2 is a bigger, better motor with lower flowing heads and a "smaller" cam to make the same power as the LS6.
Get the LS2, throw LS6 cam and heads on and be done?

Is Ls3 an option? Lot of people looking for the cts-v and G8 now.

ls2 has more potential, more displacement, more torque, better head options with the larger bore. can stroke it out to a 400ci easily. ls3's are kinda pricey yet

LS2 can run square port heads (like l92) which require a 4.00 inch bore. They seem to be the best bang for the buck heads and still relatively cheap.

Also I believe the ls6/ls2 have the same heads with different casting numbers. I think theyre 243 and 307. Not that the ls6 is worthless but look at some h/c ls2 vs ls6's, and you'll see the difference. Either the ls6 will need a lot more expensive heads and or much larger cam to make similar numbers as the ls2. Cubic inches are your friend.

And there's no ls3 ctsv. Its an lsa cause it has the boose maker 1800 on it.

My current problem is I can't find an 06-08 CTS-V. Better rear end and the LS2.
I'm about half-way talked into getting an LS6 one and the upgraded "Gen III" rear diff... I'm not sure though.

LS2 heads are the same as LS6 heads (243 casting), except the LS6 ones have the sodium filled exhaust valves to support the 6600 rpm. They are nice heads and you could definately get them ported/polished.

However, the nice thing about having an LS2, is you have a 4 inch bore, which allows the utilization of the L92 heads which are basically a poor mans version of the LS7 heads for a smaller displacement engine. Couple that with an L76 intake, and proper valve events on a cam custom desinged for L92 heads, and you can have a REAL beast (think 450+ rwhp). From what I've read regarding the L92 heads, is that you have to match the cam to it, and if you don't you have the oportunity to get a dog.

Wonder how true that is... sounds like an easy plan though.

Mostly true minus the l76 intake. Thats pretty much been proven bust in the last few years. But yes you would want a cam that matches those heads. The intake runner on a square port flows much different than a cathedral port. Not saying it wouldnt work as there's many people that do, but cathedral ports heads are designed for high velocity while square ports are for high volume.

You buying one shortly? I know a place that use to have quite a few of them. I drove a couple of them, including one of the station wagons, I LOVED the station wagon!!!

Anywho, shoot me a PM and I can give you the info...

Just know that none of the factory offering rear diffs will take track abuse very well at all. The newer the rear the better, but far from bullitproof. Those diffs are crazy small and only hold 1 qt or gear oil.

I guess they have 3 versions.
04-05s are junk and will make noise and explode.
06-07 are much better, but will eventually make noise. Haven't heard much about them exploding though.
They make a 3rd Gen replacement that is supposed to be the best.

I play on the street more than the track usually... but we'll see what happens.

Well I see it like this, your Buick had that nasty leering flaw of shitting trannys like all W Bodys do. Either you live with it or you pay mucho buckeroonies to get a solution to the problem. Either way its a pretty sweet car.

You happen to see the cts-v for sale that had an LS7 swap with a Ford 9" rear end Batwood?

I think so. I've actually seen 3-4 with motor swaps.
I'd rather start out stock... lol. I already got rid of one cluster-fuck.
It will be nice to start over and see how it progresses mod by mod.

I wanna try getting out to more car "races" than "meets" out on the street, gotta start somewhere though. I hear of my Boss out in his Audi and people reving and playing with him on the street, but I get no action from any car unless I do the provoking which seems like an "immature" thing to do. I wanna run my car against someone just for fun and street benchmarking. Just to see what its able to do. When I raced Rob, starting in the wrong gear will kill ya as well as shitty fuel issues which are now fixed!

EDIT: Get a car running Brian and I'll run ya for fun to see what your car can do man.

I was thinkin of picking up something Saturday... I'm not sure if things will work out or not though.
I'd love to get some street races going again! Its been a long time...
