View Full Version : WTB/WTT: 5" tach

i have a 5" Autometer Sport Comp tach with recall i wanted to use for my truck, but i don't think it's compatible for 4 or 6 cyl engines. i'm looking to buy or maybe partially trade for a similar tach that'll work with the engine in my truck. anyone have anything laying around?

Ryan and I were talking and Im kinda surprised it wouldnt work. Im sure you know by now with all the wiring there is a tach signal from the ECU that I would think should work. Unless that tach will only work on a distributor system or maybe has that switch on the back for 6-8 cyl? I've seen some cheap ones that would only do 6-8, but I figured a Monster tach would work.

If you find a tach on Summit or a glow shift brand tach you like let me know. Anxious to see this thing run.

i'm getting the signal right off the coil pack('90 coils have a signal wire). i suppose if nothing else, i could just try it and see what happens. just not in a hurry to spend $200-$250 for a tach if someone has something laying around.

i have no tach:( its broke but if it doesnt work for my poopy 4 cyl thats lame. and like you said, 200-250 for a gauge. i think they over price gauges. its like 5-10 dollars worth of parts.

Buy an MSD tach driver. Problem fixed.

from the instructions it looks like it can do 4cyl and 6 cyl as well as 8 cyl . I always took signal wires from near the ecu after reading the ecu pinouts online.

Still need a tach driver to convert the signal from the coil packs into something the gauge will recognize. I tried the same thing.

for $90, i'll just spend another $50 and get a brand new tach with shift light.

the car has a built in tach driver from the factory. just wire it to the ecu rpm wire in this article http://vfaq.com/mods/gvr4_afc_instructions.html and follow the instructions from the tach manual. i think buying a new tach will put you in the same situation, you still have to tell the tach your running a 4 cyl .

its really easy for me to get at the ECU right now, i'll try hooking the tach up to it and see what happens and report back.
