found a 160 degree thermostat on ebay just now for $25 shipped. u ls guys running them?

this is usually an early mod but i kinda forgot about it until slowride asked me if i had one and i said no but it sounded like a good idea

I put a 160 degree in the cobra along with reprogramming the cooling fans.. I didnt notice any difference but I guess it makes me feel better

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't the ls engines designed to be ran at factory operating temps due to the aluminum expansion?

Sure even I can save money on used parts. Used is often half price, much more then my dealer discounts. The brand I bought is Motorad and is available at autozone, I would've got a new SLP or Hypertech rebranded version through my distributor but its like $20 more and its the same exact thing.

For emissions and mpg's the stock thermostat works best. For power and knock resistance you want lower temps but people argue the case each way on tech.

Im not a fan of aftermarket thermostats, I had one in my old car and then put a OEM one in and noticed a big drop in coolant temps. For a GM in my opinion Ac Delco is the only way to go and im pretty sure they have a range of temps. But to each his own, hope it works for ya.

I was looking into it, for some reason, there is no drop in 160 thermostats for the 97-2002 ls1's. You have to buy a new thermo housing with the thermostat, not sure why. You can on the 2004+ and ls2.

Just the way the housing was made for the ls2 and newer. It's not going to make power, it's going to keep the cylinder head temps down to avoid detination and possibly run a degree or two more timing which might make more power. Plus you have a buffer when you start to bring the engine under load it will take a decent amount of time to heat the engine up past the stock temp. Then, weather permitting, the car will cool faster if it's getting enough airflow. Look at all the dyno pulls that are made, when do the cars make the most power? Not when they are fully up to temp right off the highway, but after they cool and heat soak is reduced. The car won't actually run at 160 it will be more like 170-180 depending on speed and cooling fan operation.
