Hope everyone is staying home tonight, and the better part of tomorrow. Everything seems to be drifted shut and there is absolutely no visibility on the roads. I just spent a good half hour trying to make it to work, only to make it a half mile and get to turn around. Lets hope they dont try to fire me over this! lol

I drive from CR to Iowa city every day. Pretty sure I wouldn't have made it home if I would have left 2 hours later. Snow down here is easily 2 feet in the street. Cambus's stuck everywhere. Just spent 30 minutes digging my car out (was parked for MAYBE 4 hours) to drive it 10 feet into the garage.

Kicking myself for not bringing the truck home or I'd be out driving right now.

I'm sure there was hours ago....someone tried to drive one up my road to keep it here for the night in case their street doesn't get plowed.....it only made it about halfway up my private road....Someone that lives next to me has a horse pasture, and the snow builds up in the middle of the road. I went out there about an hour ago, and it was up to my knees for about 100-150 feet of my drive, and I'm 6'4... Needless to say, I'm going to have an excuse to not go into work tomorrow.

As much as I've loved my awd cars + snow tires in winter they are still no match for a truck. Our Tundra (w/rear lsd) had Nitto terra graplers and is just a tank. Need ground clearance to really get the job done.

I will not argue with you on that! Last night i was getting tossed around by tire tracks. The WRX does good but a truck with more ground clearance would be nice. If there was any more snow i would have been done for.

I have a truck but still havent got the breaks fixed.

ZacFields

Yeah this was my first real good opportunity to take the Explorer out in really harsh road conditions and I was thrilled with the results. Now, I've got some pretty nice snow tires on it, but like Slow Ride said, the ground clearance makes a huge difference in deep snow like this.

Zero tracks on my street and at least 12 inches of snow, and the Explorer handled it just fine. Even drove over a 3-foot snow bank to get out of my parking spot (I parked across the street in a parking lot so they could plow my driveway last night).

It's just frustrating that it only gets about 15mpg. I love that it was able to handle one of the worst snow-storms we've seen around here in a long time with no problems, but with gas prices over $3 per gallon and only going up, I would really like something that gets at least 20-25 mpg.

I guess there are some AWD crossovers that would probably be nearly as good in the snow but with better gas mileage. I'm not looking into buying a new car anytime soon but I've been debating for a while what I'm going to get when I finally decide to get a new one.

i actually got called into work two hours late on wednesday. my new route is in IC, and they sent me out with a hand drawn map and said good luck. i was actually kinda lucky so many people stayed home from work; i took the pepsi truck through down town IC. widened all the corners down there. i got back to CR and there was so much snow caked on the sides of my trailer you couldnt even see the crank for the landing gear.

on the plus side, when i left for work that morning, i had a 4' tall snow drift behind the Jimmy. i didnt have time to shovel, so i just put it in 4hi, took a couple runs at it and trudged out my drive and down my unplowed street. best $450 i've ever spent. Thanks Trevor!

Krumm
02-05-2011, 11:11 AM
power is over rated. i want a motor that will start and run no matter the temp. You cant count on a diesel to do that. Last thing i wanna be doing is changing out a fuel filter at 2am in the freezing cold.

what good is all that power when your tires break loose?

Drifte
02-05-2011, 01:09 PM
If I plowed I think I would want a small truck, with a big gas motor, lots of ground clearance, standard cab short box. Would want all the fancy junk though so it worked well, heated mirrors, wipers, seats, remote start, block heater. I can think of all kinds of cool stuff.

Hmm a raptor with a plow...

02-06-2011, 10:43 AM
Even my old 94 F350 starts up in the cold as long as its been plugged in but I know what your saying. Maybe you dont need the extra power but its never a bad thing, you would think the extra weight and reliability of certain diesel's would be desirable. I really dont see a reason why the eco-boost Ford wouldnt be good for plowing, plenty of power, aparently very tough and reliable. Maybe not ideal but seriously, its not like you need anything special in a truck to plow snow. As long as its 4wd and the heat works, I would imagine the next most important thing in a plow truck is a good cup holder and a case of beer

its not like you need anything special in a truck to plow snow.

true, if your only plowing your own driveway. And i see no point in a diesel because of many reasons. One, the motor is heavy as shit, now go throw a 900lbs plow on the front and your maxing out/past your trucks limits. Two, unless you have a 8ft v-box spreader loaded to the gills you'll never have enough weight to keep traction on those tires. You spin your tires when your pushing serious snow and your fucked.

This is all of course my opinion, that i have formed from experience. but theres also other reasons that i can't really rely on a diesel. i would love one as a extra truck, but not my DD.

sparkles
02-06-2011, 07:12 PM
Not to mention, most diesels are meant for towing, not for holding a bunch of weight up front. I hear all the time about plow trucks breaking torsion bars primarily on diesels.
