Im a new gtp owner. bought a 97 yesterday. and am looking for good forums to visit for this car, as i dont know these cars very well at all. the car is basically stock. it has a timing tricker wiried into the iat sensor, and maybe a cooler thermostat. but thats it. and to me the s/c is toooo quiet, so im looking for fun ways to mod this car, or easy tricks/tips

here she is if anyone is curious

for forums I think clubgp is still around

Performance wise, I'd suggest looking into a ZZP package
http://www.zzperformance.com/grand_prix ... &catid=136 (http://www.zzperformance.com/grand_prix/products1.php?id=944&catid=136)

is supposedly pretty much the guarantee'd way to go from a stock GTP to a high 13 second GTP.

Just an intake alone will make the supercharger scream.

Have fun with it, they're awesome fun cars! I've test driven so many of them when looking and loved every one, I still don't know why I have never got one with the way I love them.

Just watch for intake gasket / trans! Only real 'common' problems that I know of.
How many miles?

154k, but have a glove box full of service records

yeah, if taken care of should still be nice.

First one I ever drove was a 97 with 170k on it, I was only driving it cause the salesman kind of prodded me into it and I didn't even really want to, didn't have high hopes with the mileage and body was a 6/10.

It ran absolutely amazing though, rode like a cadillac, said it was averaging 27mpg and I stopped to give it a test run and it just shocked me roasting through 1st. I ended up buying the firebird at the time but I do kind of wish I had looked into that GTP considering he said he'd sell it for 2.2k

Clubgp.com or gtpworld.net (I'm a member at this one)

Zzp has pretty good parts. I'm sure bat wood will chime in as he has an L67 powered car. I used to have one so I remember little bits and pieces.

First off, change the supercharger gear oil.

s/c oil was recently flushed...along with a new s/c base gasket

That's very good, how far are you wanting to go with this car?

not insane, as im liking the gas mileage...its a dd for me, but i would like to open her up a bit to have SOME fun with it. but not overboard as i still have my camaro to dick around with when its nice out

You could get a CAI to get a little blower whine going and step down to a smaller pulley. You can run a 3.5 pulley without getting headers (pricey) and that can keep it plenty of fun and still fuel efficient.

Cone filter, pulley, coils, wires, tune, done. Pretty much the same thing I did to my Superchicken. Fun car.

will a 3.5 from a 3.8 really make that much of a difference?

About 275 hp roughly. It'd be a decent step up. A 3.4 would require headers and other random mods.

how can i stay away from headers by a .1 inch difference?

a 3.4 pulley would not require headers that would be a 3.3 and lower

ZZP Modular Pulley System
3.4 pulley Colder Tstat & spark plugs, downpipe, Cold air intake, tune (still could have KR)

3.3 pulley requires all of the above plus a VS cam, SS intercooler, or headers

3.2 pulley 3.4 mods and a XP cam

3.0 pulley 3.4 mods and a fullsize intercooler or an SS ic and a VS cam.

Anything smaller than a 3.0 pulley will require a camshaft, headers, intercooler & injectors.

PRESS-ON PULLEY

3.4" for 97-00 GTP/GS with ZZP PCM, Tstat, colder plugs, bolt in downpipe, and a cold air intake.

3.3" pulley requires a small cam or headers or any intercooler

3.2" pulley requires an XP cam or a full size intercooler or an SS intercooler and rockers or a cam

3.0" pulley requires larger injectors and a full size intercooler

Running a pulley smaller than we recommend will just make performance suffer, you will have KR. KR reduces full throttle timing reducing HP.

so i could just easily throw a 3.4 pulley on and have a good time with it??

Take out the u bend if you're going to go without headers. Most anywhere you go will recommend headers

oVa-Boost

yeah you might want to get a tune, colder tstat, colder plugs, dp, cat back and intake and should be set

There isn't really a definate pulley size you can run without knock... it all depends on the car.
If you can scan, you can figure out what you need to do to get rid of the KR.
I had every damn thing you could get for a 3.4 set-up and it still had 5* of knock.

Get a downpipe and U-bend delete, intake, colder plugs and wires if it needs it (stock coils are best). I'd say nothing smaller than a 3.4 without a tune. Maybe a 180* t-stat too.
If you want... you can get a "canned tune" PCM for cheap. It will let you do 3-1 downshifts, richen up the car, and kill some knock. Only $125 from ZZP.

Clubgp.com has everything you ever wanted to know about these cars... only problem is it is FULL OF ASSHOLES. Seriously, if you post or anything on there, be ready to get attacked for no reason.

There aren't many modded w-body's running around anymore... should be fun!

Agreed 145%, they do have some funny shit on there from time to time and a few useful threads though.

to combine all the above posts and answer your question, no you can not just throw on a 3.4 pulley and go you will need

intake, thermostat, plugs, exhaust from the downpipe back, and a tune then you will be good to go!

also talk to fiddynuts he used to be in GTP's and had a pretty quick one if i remember

Stock GTP catback is good for 12s. Down pipe and U-bend are restrictive. Cat removal is up to the owner, I guess.

Fiddy had a pretty sweet GTP. Gave up on it and decided to go fast the easy way!

Grandprixforums.net is full of 16 year olds who ask the same dumb questions and for some reason always bash zzp. i have a couple parts laying around for sale. zzp wires special edition hood and trunk sd lip. also have fifdy tint your tail lights

And just get headers first instead of a downpipe. if i would do it all over again id buy a turbo kit and a built trans

I see you're going twincharged, huh?

You can buy the canned tune from zzp, w body store or one of those guys.... or any local tuning place could set you up much better than a generic tune.

Those mods would be a great start. Do the u-bend delete for sure though... 3" or 2.5" downpipe helps a lot too. U-bend delete alone is like 10-15 whp gained. (all you need is a straight piece of exhaust with an O2 bung). Your 2.25" exhaust goes down to something around 1.5" at the u-bend.

Oh, and yeah... going twincharged. T70 Turbonetics and a Gen 5 Eaton M90 blower.... two intercoolers and bunches of headaches.

i dont want to sound dumb, but would a down pipe replace this u bend? or do i have to physically cut it out and weld in a straight piece of pipe?

oVa-Boost
12-29-2010, 10:47 PM
i believe you can get the down pipe with the u bend delete on it, its in the options when you select which one to buy from zzp

i ran an aluminized 3in off road downpipe from zzp, they are cheap and delete the u bend, cat, etc...

what everyone has said thus far is all pretty much correct for starting off..just keep checking out those sites and you'll figure it out..

this all makes me miss my ol' white widow and chads black car...we made a name for ourselves in those fuckers haha
