Thought id post my build thread on here and see what you guys think. ALL assembly was done by yours truly......

Well to start, ill just say that i went to CFR early Aug. and on my 3rd pass, (on spray), it hooked and i was sprayin at low RPM............BOOM!!!!! No2 backfire at the line. It sat in the driveway for a lil bit and i started building an LS/Vtec project. My goal was to be able to drive it everyday, be reliable but not crazy, go to the track and run mid-high 13s.

Build specs:
B18B1 bottom end
PR3 B16A3 head
GSR cams
ARP rod bolts
LS head gasket
Stock LS pistons and rods
Rebuilt B16A oil pump
GSR water pump
GSR timing belt
Golden Eagle dowels
Custom Hose oil feed line
After break-in, it will be sprayed with 75 shot
93 LS trans

Pretty neat, never really looked at all went into a Honda build. Always been a V8 guy until my mom in law gave me her old 92 Accord. I'd rock something like that, it'd be a blast to drive.

On the way is a new VTEC head gasket and new top end gasket kit. with new valve seals. Hopefully goin to the dyno sometime in Jan or Feb........ hopin to see at least 160 on motor. Itll have a 75 shot in the spring, along with drag radials...... 205/55/14s

Im not gonna set my hopes real high, thats all. The guy thats tuning it said hes seen 190 out of a bone stock LS/Vtec with LS pistons, ITR cams, and real aggressive tune. I secretly want 175-180. But the car will have a lot torque, gotta remember its a gutted EF 4 door, on spray..........

What's "a lot"?

And what does it weigh?

civicex_1134
12-15-2010, 07:25 PM
it should have more torque than a GSR or the same. And last year with full interior, full tank of gas and me in it........ 2280lbs. Weighed it at alter steel. It now has a dash and 2 seats

Drifte

I've read a hundred different things, have to weigh it to really know. I know I weighed my old Talon and it was impressively lighter than stock, with mostly minor things gone.

12-16-2010, 09:25 AM
Looks good Dallas, just a couple questions and observations..

Stock pistons?
did you measure piston/cylinder clearance? bearing clearances?
Seems like your torque specs for rods and mains are pretty dam low to me.

and yeah that is a back words way to assemble a engine, at least to me it is. I've always installed the crank first then installed pistons with bearing in it already and put on rod caps as you go.

Your making good progress man I like it, keep it up

civicex_1134
12-16-2010, 09:03 PM
The only clearenes i didnt check were the mains and rods...... only cuz sperry told me everything was perfect and to just order stock bearing clearances... Top ring is .011 2nd ring .08

b16 head should gain you 30whp. I would expect to make that whp on a nice tune with those cams. If the car is gutting the hp should get you around pretty good. Hopefully it revs pretty high too.

Also, change that oil T ASAP. Having that 3" pipe nipple in there is a bad idea.

It looks like you forgot the assembly lube in that original build.

And thats not a 3in nipple, its only 1 1/2in and its been on there for damn near 4,000 miles and the motor doesnt leak a drop of oil. I maybe just a noob to sum of u guys, but ive been learning hondas since i was 14. uhm, no...... i most def did not for get assembly lube, im smarter than that....... And thats not a 3in nipple, its only 1 1/2in and its been on there for damn near 4,000 miles and the motor doesnt leak a drop of oil. I maybe just a noob to sum of u guys, but ive been learning hondas since i was 14. And while they may not be as long as most of u, i do know enough to use assembly lube, and know what parts not to use.

I hope you have fun when it cracks and you loose oil pressure to the head.

But really, every pic the cams are dry.

Good job on the build...

Any idea what it made for power before?

cams came out of a motor, they had oil all over them already, so did the head. so assembly lube wasnt necessary as far as the head goes. But i did however use it in the bottom-end. And ill be sure to let u know when i "lose oil pressure", which im sure i wont. I think i know wtf im doin, kthxbye.

Batwood,... It only picked up a few hp, but first pull the AFRs were all over the place, fluctuating between 11.2-maxed out lean (18.0)..... Lucky it didnt blow up actually, now its a smooth 12.6-12.8, and throttle response is WAY better. Thanks for the compliment too.

I'm cleaning out one of our warehouses just down the road from there and setting up our new shop. I stopped in to get a tire on my wife's car sealed back up. That was last week though. Honestly, during the winter, I only stop in there every once in a while when I need something dumb like that, that I don't trust Firestone to do. I swear, they could fuck up a wet dream. Plus, I'd rather give my money to a local shop like Kelly's instead of a chain. He runs a great shop, it's nice and shiny, plus it's fun to BS with Chad and Brian.

The whole deal with my first post wasn't to stir shit up though. He hadn't posted what it made, so I decided to find out. That's what I was told, so I posted it. Hindsight is 20/20. Probably not my place to post his stuff, but for what it was, I thought it was impressive enough in a light car like that. Especially one that was done himself on a learning curve instead of just paying a machine shop to do it for you.

If you wanna meet me for real, let me know. I'll be at the bar in Cedar Rapids after work during the week soon enough.

I think when drifte posted "Apparently more like "175" " I think he was referring what Dallas thought it was going to make or what it could make. he wasn't saying you were wrong

should be a good race with the volvo. I would have put assembly lube on the cams even if they had "oil" on them, im sure the caps got scared a little on start up.

Well when i pulled it all apart to do the top end gaskets, they were just as perfect as they always were. to end this argument b4 it get outta hand, ill say nothing went in that motor "bone dry", it ALL had some sort of lubrication b4 it was all torqued down.........

Yeap, saw his FB announcement of the numbers it had and the numbers it was supposed had it not been shaking. Which is a bit of a scary thought that it would shake that bad and drive 80mph on public roads...

Im sure your car is fun and rewarding. I just have gotten over the idea of all that time invested and still not keeping up with the average coupe coming out of the dealership doors. Which also have all basic amenities.

Speaking of newer cars, nothing new has really impressed me lately until something shocking did. A local guy here who has a 08 Z06, bought a new Hyundai Sonata with the 2.0 turbo engine for a daily driver/work car for traveling. 275hp, weighs like 3300lbs if I remember right.

Man that thing was surprising!! With me, him, and icwicked in the car it still felt pretty damn fast for a family sedan. Never thought a Hyundai would impress me like that haha. Reminds me of the first time I was surprised riding in a GTP.

Sorry, we aren't jacking your thread here or anything! :BURNOUT:

In all fairness though, I'd much rather work on this honda of yours than one of the newer electrical/emission/plastic nightmares coming out today. I swear, soon they'll figure out a way to make the entire heads/blocks/rods out of plastic. My grandmother bought a 2010 Kia Forte, nice car for the price but I can't get over how much stuff is plastic anymore..
