View Full Version : Turbo options - upgrading from a 20g?

Just curious on opinions here.

I'm thinking about upgrading my turbo as well this winter if it's within my budget.

Due to the fact the Buschur Racing 20g, while one of the best spooling street turbos out there - is only considered a 450whp turbo.. So it should get me to my 400whp goals but eventually I would like to push farther.

I'm considering looking into a HX40 or FP Green.. ideally I'd like an FPGreen but they're so damned expensive.. over 1k where a Holset setup can be had for 500-800 depending what you get / how you set it up.

Just wanting some opinions from you more experienced crowd on these ideas as well as any other well-performing well-priced turbos for my goals..

I just don't want to end up with a turbo that'll make the power I want but be laggy as hell and no fun on the street.

you could get a better turbo than fp green for around the same price get a pte 5857 turbo

I'm going to disagree with this statement.
yes FP turbos are pricey and non BB, but they are bolt on. You will not match the spool up of a green. then with a t3/t4 housing you will have to get a manifold most likely or maybe someone on the board might have a mitsu to t3 adapter cough slo4cly cough. then it would make more sense. but you will lose a lot of tq going to a t series housing. I know when I upgrade from my stock turbo, I am going with a hta green. Its all about your goals.

there are MANY more bolt-on turbos that are better then a Fp Green. Look around. DSM's have a HUGE bolt-on turbo market.

lol. those turbos are my favorite.

staying Mitsu flanged you only have about 400 options to choose from. But hit the dyno, your probly at 300whp, that 20g is tired. Grab a PTE 5557 or Turbonetics 50 trim with the mitsu bolt on turbine housing (in stock at IE) and your done.

Yeah, I'm pretty much positive that I'm in the 300-320whp range.

I still may push this 20g a bit further, the problem is I really can't afford to drop 1,000+ on a turbo yet.

People are still buying 20g's for good money. I had an offer on mine for $500 - I should of taken it but it was early in summer and with track days coming up i didn't want to make the car go down.. especially since I'd need to re-tune it and everything.

Selling my 20g could almost fund 2/3 of an HX35/HX40 set up.

Depending how the money goes this winter though, I may look into the PTE's, I hear a lot about them but have never actually looked into them. How do people like the Borg Warner's? My buddy runs a 57trim Borg Warner on his civic and it seems to perform flawlessly and spools great and pulls hard but i haven't heard the BW name much in the DSM world.

The following prices are private and cannot be shared anywhere. So do not call around trying to get price matching!

PTE HP Technology 5557 535hp capable. $800
.48, .63 a/r mitsu flanged.
Basically any size same price. 5857 in stock, takes 2-3 days to get anything else.

Turbonetics Super 50 trim 550hp $780

Save your self the trouble of making something else work when these 2 turbos are proven performance that bolts on ;)

I'd just make what you have work better then upgrade. With cams and some race gas there is no reason it won't make over 400whp. Lag sucks. A responsive 300whp car is more fun to drive than a 400whp lagmobile.

Full race and some other big names run Borg Warners. what is reasonable lag? Put a evo III 16g and call it a day. I think it would be a good fun turbo.

20g hybrid on this car hits as hard as a 16g and keeps pulling up top. If he wants more power I'd put the td06 housing on it so it can more easily run 30psi. It will add some lag but any other turbo is going to that can also net more hp. Just run 25psi and you should net 375whp assuming the tune is good.

E85 is your friend. Keep current turbo and you will be happy.

280hp and 300tq :)

Im going to add some parts so its happier but the modding is mostly done on the car

yeah its looking like 23-25psi on E85 along with a built head over the winter will seal the deal. That and fixing all my broken shit haha!

maybe run a little more boost than that. e85 loves timing also.

well I dont think the 20g will be efficient more than a few more psi after 25ish, but I'm assuming that on E85 with a built head at 25psi I ought to be able to hit my goals.. hopefully :P

Old school guys with that turbo used to run 30-35psi and go 10's with it. I'd say it's got a lot more in it.

If you wanna go t3 i have a AMS adaptor plate :)... back on topic. I would keep the 20g and build around that platform good cams, IM and maybe think about a different intercooler/piping route. You should dyno first though so you know what your starting with.

I wanted to but at that time I had just got the car started/running again and didn't want to trust it for a road trip, ended up having issues again not too long after so I'm kind of glad haha.
