I'm doing a lot of work on my eclipse this winter. I started with switching from auto seat belts to manual belts. I then removed all the wiring for the auto belts from the body electrical harness. While my interior is all out im installing a hydraulic staging break. I pulled the motor out last night, my #2 cylinder was 15 psi low compression, I'm replacing the pistons, rods and crank with new rings and bearings. While all this is happening I will also be doing a major wire tuck in the engine bay and repainting it along with 2 front fenders. Once the motor is back in and running comes suspension and all poly rear subframe bushings and front control arm bushings. Here are some pics of my progress so far. Its a bit messy but is being cleaned up little by little.

Yeah last winter was the only winter i haven't pulled the motor since i got it running in 05. But i like to check everything over and do some preventative maintence so i don't have to do it mid season.

Mount the brake and clutch master cylinder inside the car. Would be the best dsm wire tuck in history. Run all brake lines so they arent in the bay. Looks like you'll have a good bit of weight loss. I assume your pulling out the carpet and other random things. You can drilled out the spot welded in brackets in the hatch real easy too. They dont weigh much but might as well.

I've found pedal clusters that get rid of the booster and the clutch and brake master cylinders are mounted inside the car but i think i'll wait on that. The carpet is actually stayin in, i need a 91-94 shifter so i can put my center consule back in. Yeah the brackets in the hatch i thought about, i want to get everything else done and ill work on all of that if i have some free time. The motor is getting tore down tonight

Well i pulled the pistons and rods out sunday night. It's a good thing I stopped driving it, the top ring on #2 cyl was burnt, stuck and chipped up. All 4 of them had evidence of detonation. We didn't have it tuned to conservative for pump gas but i think the next motor will be, and mainly run on leaded 110 or higher fuels. I had the pistons in there for over 4 years so they've had a fair share of abuse and I got my money's worth out of them. I'll post up pictures tonight.

Plugs looked fine, #2 always had more soot on it, that was from the low compression from the burnt rings but no evidence that the pistons were going to look the way they did

Looks good man, its amazing how much that wiring actually weighs. I think I pulled about 10 pounds of wire out of the mustang when I went through that. Think the detonation is from too much timing?

It had a really agressive tune on it for 91 octane pump gas, i think i got a bad tank of gas and it just did not agree with the tune at all.

Also got random knock here and there with it.

Seems to run the best on the Shell / Conoco's / BP premium.

Ahh I gotcha - I've only been running the 91 shell premium lately and it runs perfect on it. It's considered one of the best available here aside from the Conoco 93 which is over 3.00 a gallon but if you're going to the track it's supposedly worth it for 93 octane tunes.

If i would have had a station with 93 close to me i would have ran that. all i have is 91 or 92 ethanol. next year 110 leaded will be the lowest it sees i think.

if the car is tuned on 93 octane is it really worth saving under $5 a fill up to run crappier gas that could cause detonation?

It's tuned for 91

Although when I get DSMLink it'll probably be a 93 only tune or E85 if I find a deal on bigger injectors... Just a matter of seeing if I'll have the money, I've been spending so much money lately on maintenance so I'm budgeting a bit.

honestly not sure if brents car was due to 91 octane, the pistions were 3 years old and it had missfires and ignition problems on and off in that time. Any one of those things over time will where down pistions. If it ran smooth at the timeing that I had in it for those 3 years I think the pistions would look brand new.

If you have the ability to get higher octane gas then it's stupid not to. I barley boost in the winter but I don't go putting 89 octane in my car. It's just not worth it. I'd rather spend an extra $1-2 at the pump then 1000-2000 on a new motor.

Well the talon would never see anything under 91 without a doubt.

The shell vpower 91 is great and runs perfect. The conoco's 93 is also extremely good and is really the only way to go if your car is tuned for 93 around here. BP 93 is also good.

It's stuff like the wal-mart/hy-vee/casey's/star/gasland around here whose 91 / 93 you definitely want to stay away from. Watered down shit.

I ran the Wal-Mart 93 once in the talon and I kept registering a bit of knock whenever starting from 700rpms to about 1.5k

Now I stick with Shell or Conoco and haven't seen knock at all.

I think they were a little older than that even. But yeah i did have the Power TR unit go bad that was causin it to randomly drop cylinders i forgot about that. We'll never really know what did it, all we can do is speculate. The machine shop said the wear on the piston skirt is most likely from contamination in the oil, probably gas.

That was my talon, not my evo. I had my talon running 10.0 a/f's and around 5* of timing. I think I could of put diesel in that thing and nothing would have happened.

I'm more of a fan of meth injection or e85 because its so cheap. A street car that requires $8+ for gallon of gas just doesn't make sense to me. You'd probably only inject about a 1/2 gallon of meth per full tank of gas and that is if you get on it a decent amount.

By the way, a new gas station in North Liberty offers e85, its right by the i380 on/off ramp.

Heh this is why I like the idea of E85.

We have a station right here in town that sells it :)

I just hate it that Cordova doesn't have E85 and there are no stations along the way except in galesburg but really if you leave burlington and need gas by galesburg... wtf

I'm surprised Cordova hasn't started selling E85 yet, that or a station next to it.

Well i would consider it more if i had e85 anywhere near me, and i've pondered the idea of methanol but i think i'm gonna stay away from it for now. i can get leaded 110 in tama for $6 a gallon. Its not gonna be driven to much on the street, just handle business and thats it, won't be a cruiser or anything.

A little update, got my new TAB Fab tubular exhaust manifold saturday, still need to send it out to be coated but I'm gonna check the fitment with the down pipe first because it was custom made and they didn't have the car. Also got my new Hydraulic staging break installed. I bought it with the lines, brackets and fittings, so the install was pretty easy. Motor should be going in this weekend. Here are some pics.

So the tread needs changed to 93 Talon Tsi now. Its about to start up, I have the stock transmission in it for now until I get the built one back from Jacks, hopefully its before the 24th of July so I can make it to CFR. I got the interior all finished, I need to clock my compressor just a little bit towards the motor, found out last night that it hits my slim line fan, and I need to mount my FPR and make a short return line. Here are some pics.

Update: TAB Fab got the aluminum exhaust done last week. The car started up last night, I got the idle dialed in. The car runs great and sounds pretty nasty. I'm takin it up to my friends shop today to re make the front section of the down pipe. My transmission should be back from jacks this week then it'll be ready to get tuned and hit the streets/track. I'll post up some pics later.

im pretty sure i see her a few times during the week when i deliver to her store; although ive never really talked to her. only reason i know who she is is because Colton/Bri told me. although today she did ask about the tattoo around my wrist, and then asked if it hurt- hahahahaha. she had no way of knowing about the rest of mine, and i didnt say anything about it, just kinda laughed and said "no".

The GSX is almost a bare shell on jack stands but the TSi is alive yes  . If I have a damn tranny by tomorrow I will be tuning it friday at the track. I'm not to worried about breaking anything in the more I've read and talked to my machinist the more I've figured out I'm just gonna be driving it like I will be driving it. I have the first oil change done, if I get the tranny in tomorrow night I'll put some miles on it thursday night and change the oil again for friday.

Ok Jack just called me, and said they had some miss communication. I had them tell me the advantages and dissadvantages between a welded center differential and a 4 spider, and I decided to go with a welded for $50 compared to $400 for the 4 spider. Well the salesman must not have relayed that to the tech because they only fixed the 3rd gear synchro that was burnt up, and when they told me that it was done they didn't list a that a welded diff was installed so I asked and made sure they did. Well he told me he fixed the reciept and now it said they did but that was it and apparently had to tear it back down and put one in, now its getting sent out tomorrow. I'm pretty upset about it but I know shit like that happens, (sounds like some shit right out of sears :butthead: ) and he was really nice and everything on the phone, said he was gonna try and get it here sooner, and even talked to me about some clutch issues. All in all I'm glad he called and we got everything resolved over the phone instead of damn email, but my car probably won't be driveable for another weekend :(

Well this has been a crazy week. I got my transmission back from Jack on monday, got it in that night but broke a bolt off in the trans. Luckily I had help to keep workin on gettin everything together as I tried to get this bolt out. I got lucky and got it with a ez out. Then it was time to solve the issue that has been haunting me for 3 years. I installed my ACT 2900 Pressure Plate, that I could never get to release. I tried adjusting my clutch and couldn't get enough throw. The master cylinder rod was too short, so with a tip from Jack I welded a nut on the back side of the adjuster, installed and adjusted last night and Boom clutch released. I almost did not believe it, so tonight is time for a little drive and a wash with some pics of it actually out somewhere besides my shop, and hopefully saturday dyno time!
