well got the talon up to chicago no problem what so ever and sold it.

I then got home picked up my new car and went to a car show.

Its a 89 LX 80k original miles
351w bored .30over
Port and Polished head and valve job
Wiesco pistons
Eagle rods
stock crank polished
Internally balanced.
GT 40 HEads
GT 40 intake upper and lower.
E303 Cam
Ford Racing Clutch
Ford racing Flywheel
Tremec T5
Short throw shifter
Subframe connectors
quad shocks
24lb injectors
Now I need to do a couple of things.

1. Bigger Throttle body
2. CAI
3. New exhaust (I like the sound of the flowmaster but I want long tube headers)
4 GET RID OF THOSE STUPID ASS WHEELS.
5. lowering kit (ford racing kit)
6. New window trim when the old man had it repainted they painted over the trim.

Here are the pics

if it's a 351, i dont think the 302 headers will bolt up- i could be wrong though...

im not cuttin it up but if anyone is intrested let me know

07-20-2009, 08:37 PM
I'm pretty sure that would work.

How big are the runners?

I wont go any smaller than 1 5/8"

the reason why I say this will work because it has stock 5.0 headers on it at the moment.

I sent you a PM.

07-20-2009, 08:38 PM
what gears are in the rear? I might have a buyer for that.

I have a 8.8 with a rebuilt 355 gears in it at the moment.

i have always heard you needed different headers for the 302 and 351 because of the different deckheights, but maybe its different with shorty headers? anyone shed some light on this?

07-20-2009, 08:53 PM
well the car has 302 headers on it now.

I have gt40 heads on the car.

I think its one of those deals where it all depends what headers your talking or what k-member or what trans and all that good stuff..... so i think some cars could run either but im not a huge 351 fan so ive never really looked into doing the swap

im waiting for Scott to chime in here- havent heard from him yet...

Good shorty hdrs should fit w no problems. The issue there is width of h pipe needs to be a bit more. Thats w any 351 swap. You already have that covered. A long tube don't know seen a few 302 hdrs go way out before going down.
I agree 100% w ur mods coming then a 75/100 wet shot of n2o later w tires. Should be right there w my cobra.
I didn't hear yet about fuel pump u need a 255 if not already for the n2o.

I don't know why anybody would take a 347 over a 351 besides cheating factor and a few # at least the old 351 block/ rods.
Much sturdier, better rods, crank, block. Better than a hipo 289/ mexican 302 imo. 289 500hp 351 600hp both w pistons. 5.0 late model 400hp.
You want more safe to say a boss block good rods crank pistons if a 8.2 deck. Or more $ a dart block. Same w 351 height, new block. Scott here is proof it works and mo c.i. works. I think really u need at least 400 c.i. n/a though a fox is light.

So 302 shorties should be fine? Like BBK equal length?

It has a 190lph in the car. I have to search the reciepts but its from summit.

69gt4speed
07-21-2009, 12:59 PM
I've seen them many times on a 351 swap but not equal length shorties, just the reg ones. However they are all made to end up same outlet location. 190 pump be good enough w n/a. If you did the spray I'd put in a walboro 255, cheap insurance imo. Be easiest/cheapest way to make more power w/o changing injectors etc. 75/100hp. Ask around on stangnet or svtperformance about the hdrs. Someone has them on there.

07-21-2009, 01:48 PM
Okay,

Now if I get the wally 255lph would I have to upgrade the Fuel pressure regulator? I know on the DSM when I did that I had to get an aftermarket adjustable fpr becuase the 255 overran the fpr.

07-21-2009, 01:49 PM
I dont think I'm going to play with the spray. I dont like it. If I was going to do anything I would get a procharger.

I didnt even look in this thread untill now. I am sure that the GT-40 heads have a wider bolt pattern on the exhaust anyway, are your headers drilled out for 2 seperate bolt patterns? are you 100% sure they are GT-40 heads? but the 351 and 302 headers are different, I have heard "some" of the shorty unequal length headers will fit but good luck getting them to match up with a "non-custom" H or X-pipe. If you are going to put in shorty headers I would recomend unequal length ones just because they are 100x easier to install and arent much different on HP levels at all, but make sure you get the rest of the exhaust at the same time to make sure it all fits together and dont use factory junk. Stay AWAY from Ebay, 95% of that is junk from Jap land. IMO the exhaust systems are so cheap anymore for these cars there really isnt a reason to beat yourself up trying to install something thats not right for the application. Pay attention to the exhaust bolts too I was thinking that some of them go into the water jackets on these heads and the bolts need sealer on them just like certain water pump bolts.

Knoxville what 3rd member does that rearend have bolted to it??

All the gt40s should have the same exhaust bolt pattern, the rub is in the spark plug angle. Ps will have a spark plug angle that will not work with some headers.

i also thought all the head bolts on gt40s were blind? lower head bolts on late 302s hit the water jacket but didnt think exhaust bolts did?

im not 100% but i heard someone say that before on a forum. i actually redrilled the pattern on my heads and he used that as a example that it isn't the end of the world if they break into the water jacket.. maybe im thinking of the gt40p heads but i figured they were pretty close to the same

Ok one more time gt40 heads and gt40p have same exact exh pattern as any old 289, 302, 351 ford iron head. 88gt is right, the spark plug angle is different on a gt40p and the valves are smaller stock. Since you have already some stock ford s.s. shorties then again tells me bolt pattern is same. To identify gt 40 heads 3 vert bars on front and back of heads. gt40p has 4 bars same place. Since you already have modded exhaust to fit wider 351, shorties should fit no issue. The exhaust collector outlet is always same place on a shorty.

I swapped a 71 351 into a 67 289 c4 galaxie once, we stretched the y pipe when I first put it in cause I forgot about that. About .5 inch wider than a 289/302. A pita on sunday.

69gt4speed is 100% correct in all descriptions of the gt40 heads! the gt40 castings were used on 96/97 explorers and mountaineers and 93-95 lightnings and use the standard plug angle (289,302,351), while gt40p heads were used on 98-01 explorers and mountaineers and have a different plug angle that require different headers.
