My formula's tach doesn't work but the gauge cluster and cable is all good, any ideas?

Make sure all the plugs on the distributor are fully pushed in along with the back of the gauge cluster. It's driven off of the computer so might be a problem there. I know on mine after I hooked up the MSD Digital6 Box, it would kill the factory tach. Unhook it, and it would work just fine. Make sure there's no shorts in the wires near the firewall going from the distributor to the coil and coil into the harness.

Cheap easy fix: aftermarket tach. Range in size from 2-6"...

How difficult is it to install one of those aftermarket tachs? Are there any guides for it?

You'll tie it into the white wire on the coil. There's 2 plugs going to it and each one has a pink and a white. Can't remember if it matter's which plug or not. I'm going with not. That would be your signal wire BTW. Power, Ground, Light, Done.
