I get to use an OGP Smartscope at work and that does 3 axis measuring. Has automatic edge tracing feature, so I drop an O-ring or whatever on the plate deal, find an edge on the computer monitor, double click and it will measure the outside or inside circumference using 1000+ points, and it tells you the ID/OD/whatever. That only utilizes X and Y axis' but still fucking amazing.

guy at work was talking about that. His dad sells printers kinda like that and he made a wheel bearing type model and the little balls are free spining. its really neat.
