well, i have decided to make a little "build thread" for my RX7... not gonna tell you everything about it cuz i like to keep some things a suprise...

'90GTU
Full body kit (molded, shaved trim)
4.10 TII LSD
stock rims with 27X10 slick for the track
black "Cobra R" rims for daily (17X9 fronts 17X10.5 rear)
5.0HO (factory forged pistons)
carb. conversion
Holley 600
Holley "Blue" fuel pump and FPR

That sounds awsome.
I bet it will be really nice to drive.

Should be pretty fun, the amount of power it will be making is going to be pushing teh stock block to it's limits so hopefuly it holds up. using the stock block, crank, rods and pistons for now... stock blocks are suppose to be good up to about 500~ HP, I plan to make about 450+ so hopefuly she holds up OK...

Soon..
I am actualy out there right now freezing my ass off tryin to figure the shit out. I am "more or less" done with the harder stuff but i can't find a damn 12V+ "crank" singal for my damn starter relay. Got the MSD wired, HEI hooked up, timing, pugs wires etc.. finished making room for the long tube heades (BFH style) but need to cut a little and weld a wee bit to finish that up. got the new flywheel on, the C4 and torque converter ready to go in (gonna need some helpwith that, hopeful James' lazy ass will come over)
got one of the fuel pumps/FPR and lines run and ready to go. got the intake on there, the Holley is on and ready... Still have to figure out how the fuck to get my alt. and P.S. brackets put on (mainly just have to figure out the spacers.)

Only things i really have left before tryin to start is it to figure out why I can't get a 12v+ "crank" signal and the get the transmission IN so i can bolt the starter on. Then i just have to get the radiator and put it in, get my driveshaft done up and hook up my oil cooler and trans cooler... I could really use some help, if nothing else just to keep me on track, OH and I have to wait for my shifter to get here too (next week) but i will get pics when i am done for the day. I will warn you ahead of time, the engine is DIRTY except for the new shiney stuff i put on.

are you gonna try to drift this thing with the C4?

sLoWnStEaDy
12-05-2008, 09:10 PM
That would be fun to try... but no... this is a street/strip car, more so strip than anything as i removed the heat, AC, P.S., all the vents'ducting from behinf the dash, all teh sound deadener under the carpet, speakers, stereo, un-needed wiring, and pretty much anythng else i could get rid of. It will be getting aluminum heads, already has an aluminum intake, aluminum accesory brackets etc... Still have soem stuff to do but I am hoping to get it down to about 2250~ while keeping it looking like a street car still.
Thinking about doing a 240SX/SR20DET when i get back but not sure if there is evenmuch of a drifting seen around here and i don't want ot have to drive like 200+ miles every time i want to drift...
ALSO: i have decided at the moment it is WAY too messy for pics! I will try to clean it up this weekend and snag come. BTW those damn AN fittings are a PITA!!!

Only thing i have pics of that i will share with you'all right now is the MSD install

Bought some rubber mounts from Summit for mounting the MSD 6A but teh rivets holding the back cover on didn;t allow the studs to fit through so i had to drill them out. Figured i would snap a pick of MSD guts...

not tightened down yet but....

Well, James came over to help me get the trans in... Went pretty good except for it falling on us once. We have the rear of the car about 3ft in the air so we slid it all the way to the front and used some scissor jack along with a 1/2" impact to weasle it up into place. All was well until we tried tightening the bellhousing bolts... There is a nub in the center of the Torque Converter that is keping it from mating up and all that good stuff. So i have to find a different rorque converter apparently... IDK

Scott
12-07-2008, 09:32 AM
the nub is supposed to be there, and it should fit into the end of the crankshaft centering the torque converter and keeping everything inline and balanced. you should check the crank and make sure there isnt a pilot bearing in there "your crank WILL have one if it used to have a manual trans behind it" The last converter I had was entirely painted and I had to sand off the paint in this area for it to fit in the crank it so tight of a fit

yeah, i removed the Pilot Bearing... The snout just seems WAY bigger than the holw in the back of teh crank shaft. I will have to run out and measure it and see what i come up with...

The tq converter stub has to be same size 1.375, only ones that were bigger is a c6 for a fe or early 429 1.848. Other thing is sure you seated the converter and shaft/pump right if not it sticks out too far. One other thing make sure you dump some tranny fluid in converter if a new one, otherwise won't do anything I think I put 4 qts in my 10" c6 one. Nothing else pull out converter and set it in by itself to test fit. I like antiseize on the stub. They will rust on sometimes. To seat converter gently push it in and rotate when all splines line up it will kinda clunk farther in.

Now there are several flywheel diameters for pan or case c4's. trucks, full size, one size, stangs, fairlanes, another. Lil car small flywheel big car big flywheel generally. Pan means filler tube in pan, case means tube in case. i know the c4 isn't the stock tranny as a "5.0" never had one stock. Only 289 and 302 and bunch of other 6/4 cyl. And notice there are 2 stock balance weight models, the old 289 302 and will work on 351w/c of 28oz. and the one for a "5.0" a 50oz one. A custom balanced engine can be balanced for 0oz flywheel. So you could need a 50oz flywheel, I know they changed over by 85/86 for sure. way to tell is size of balance weight. wrong one it'll vibrate bad.

you get a lot of weird stuff w ford tranny swaps trust me, get ducks in a row and it's ok. Even going from a stick to auto like my 69 took me several days of asking cause I forgot that stuff and dad is retired. crossmembers, driveshaft length, cooler lines, shifter rods, levers. just finding stuff for a 428 c6. Stuff is rare these days. Had to make stuff too. :suspect:

Yeah, i got the flywheel and everything figured out. Not quite sure WTF is up with the T.Q.
I am going to see if any local places have a C4 T.Q. and i am going to measure the snout and see what is up. Only thing to figre out is why that damn snout is SO much bigger than it "should" be.

Scott
12-10-2008, 12:29 PM
is it WAYY to big or just barely? Like I said earlier I had to sand the snout and my crank adapter to get them to fit together.. Its always a good idea to trial fit converter in trans AND on flexplate/crank before mounting the trans on the engine. I have a crank adapter because I use a gm converter with the "ford" crank..

well, i test fit the flywheel to the TQ while mounted in the trans, then tested the flywheel to the engine but never flywheel/TQ to the engien as i never really even though this was a possibilty

took the micrometer out there, the TQ snout came in at about 35MM and the hole in the crank came in about 23MM (with the Pilot Bearing REMOVED and these numbers are rounded up/down so...)

holy balls!!! yeah your torque converter is definetly not right. I have a 9.5 or 10" converter sitting at my parents house you could try if you would be interested in buying it. It would flash to about 3000 or so behind a decent 347, might work ok for ya. I will check to make sure its stil in the attic

Yeah, let me know... If I have to buy one anyways i might as well see if yours will work for me.

Well, I got that whoel thing figured out... for one there was actualy a second Pilot bearing WAY in the back (had nothing to do with the T.C. not going in but...)
So i packed a bunch of grease in there, got a socket and extension that would JUST barely fit through the pilot bearing and packed the socket full of grease too. Then i put the socket in there and started to hammer away and as planned the hydraulic pressure pushed the pilot bearing right out, but along with it came a pilot BUSHING too (might not be the name but it came out) so then to T.C. flopped right in there, got the trans put in, starter put on, ignition buttom rigged up and some other minor things.
I think i might have to mess with the trans crossmember becuase it was built for a T-5 and now i am running a C4 so it may have ot get moved back a couple inches (what i was told, haven't actualy checked yet... I also got my shifter but have yet to hook it up. I have a few little things to finish up but I am hoping it will be running next weekend. Then the driveshaft and radiator and i can drive it right to the storage garage ;)

just got in on this thread. Pretty amazing the things those old farts like scott and 69gt4spd (Rob?) have in their brain. Yea, I called you old.

I was just messing. But dustin now your old...but seriously how old are you? I forget im not 18 anymore all the time. Im 22, either gotta get married or turn 25 fast, insurance sucks.

[edit]
just realized i hijacked a good thread, sorry keith.

It's OK... I kinda fucked this thread up myself. I figure I will probably start a new one here sooner or later when i actualy have pictures and stuff, or just get this one cleaned up or soemthing... As for the forgetting how old you are thing. I was just on Rock 108 the other day and realized i said i was 21 when i am closer to 23... as for the Rock 108 thing, they where asking about bad christmas presents, i was the one that got a porno movie and lotion from my grandma. She said it would keep me from having kids too young LOL... i now have a 2 year odl (well like 20 months) so i guess that didn't really work out like she planned :)

As for the build... I am having some wiring issues so instead of doind like i planned i am going to be putting in a switch panel (later today) to run the fuel pump, ignition, and all other accessories as well as the push button starter. For some reason i have NO accessory wires and no "CRANK" signal +12V either so.... IDK for now i will rock a switch board...

sLoWnStEaDy
12-18-2008, 07:55 PM
couple new pictures but... Still having some minor wiring issues, I can't get any 12v+ switched power anywhere and nothing that is suppose to turn on with the ignition (fuel pump, turn signals, acc. wire in the stereo hanress) is powering on either. Plenty of constant 12v+ though...

made my own "MSD 8861" harness cuz i didn't want to wait for one
http://imgplace.com/image_bin/1800/956aaa4507d2500943a092bd18b1478b.jpg.th.jpg (http://imgplace.com/image/view/956aaa4507d2500943a092bd18b1478b)

then got my switch/push button start panel all done up...
http://imgplace.com/image_bin/6107/8dfed32d695f6d4c3e4d7b7ddc8b670b.jpg.th.jpg (http://imgplace.com/image/view/8dfed32d695f6d4c3e4d7b7ddc8b670b)

No heat or A/C so those old vents above the switch panel is getting hacked up to house some gauges. Below that will be the cd player of course and may be somethign else, IDK...
