Drift Car Platform?

Tryin to narrow down my next project for when i return from Basic/AIT. Got it down to a '73 Mach One, 50's Ford pickup or a drift car. I am wondering what you guys think is a GOOD platform to start a drift car? Of course the obvious stuff comes to mind like the RX7 (which is what my drag car is so that is out...) carolla, supra, and all those other RWD imports. But i was thinking something a little "out there but not so crazy that it will cost me a million dollars tryin to get it drift ready. First car that came to my mind was...

To be more specific a Datsun 510 with an SR20DET swap... (that particaular car is a turbo rotary) http://www.bryanf.com/510/



HOWEVER: I have since decided I am done with these "crazy" engine swaps and just want a car i can get into drifting with fairly cheap. AE86 i see alot and they are cheap, those old carollas, supras, 200sx etc...

The trouble with finding an AE86 or a 240SX is finding on that's not beat to hell by some kid or has already been gutted and molested into some bastard love child of a car project. I like the old Datsun 510 idea- check out "Sport Compact Car" and their 510; they made it a rally car or something (can't remember for sure) but I think they did an SR20 swap into theirs.

I've always loved the Porsche 944, thats not something you see in a drift tourne to often. They came turbo to I believe.

if drifting is something you plan on getting into fairly seriously then a 240sx is prolly the best way to go. there are soooo many aftermarket parts for them plus there are a few people around here that really know there way around them when it comes to the mechanical workings of them. they are starting to become the honda of the RWD world. i personally would love to do a Miata for a next drift car. Ive seen a few that are insane!! AE86's are a rare find around here. especially a GT-S with no rust. ive started seeing older BMW's around but hear that parts are hard to find for. A buddy of mine has a 2nd gen supra that he drifts and does fairly well for a TANK!! but he says they also are hard to find parts for. it pretty much comes down to what you would like to build. then go from there.

510 seems like it has too short of a wheelbase to be a decent drifter. Donut machine maybe....

AE86 style Corolla's have a tiny wheelbase to. From what I've read they are harder to drift but once you can drift them you can drift anything. Older corolla's also dont make that much power with the stock engine, I think alot of people swap them for the 20valve engine out of the mid to late 90's corolla's.

yea stock they don't produce much power, which i think is a good thing for a beginning drifter. for me anyways the lack of power allowed me to be constantly on the throttle when learning car control. i found when i even bumped the boost slightly it made a world of difference is handling. but ueo beat a 415hp Silvia with a 180hp AE86 one of the things i like most about drifting. you don't need to dump tons of money in a motor to be a competitive driver. i did own a 85 corolla before my 240 and i was planning on dropping a 20V motor in it. but looking back i think i would just build up a 16 valve 4AGE. or if you really wanted to be a baller you could do like an old employer of mine did and buy a Hasselgren built motor they rev to like 10,000rpm lol. he ran it in a toyota atlantic series race car. You better be ready to shell out quite a bit for one of those!!!!

get a little rwd car and do the right thing. Start in gymkhana and work your way to drifting. If you find gymkhana to bore you. Which, you may eventually feel the need for high speed sideways...I feel that way everyday.
