My first car was my 1992 1.8L 5spd Laser given to me by my mom when she let me choose between her 94 Geo Prizm or the Laser (of course my decision was obvious)
Here she is, if only I could find tranny/help to put it in :(
I miss it bad, she sits in a garage.
http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll208/Kornelias/laser.jpg
Tranny went out and got a Grand Am given to me which was totaled within a week after going off Highway 34 at 70mph.
Oh well, that car wasn't my cup of tea anyway.

After that I had to find a car within a week, only car I could find that I could stand in town was a 1999 Alero GLS - Worst decision ever. Nothing but problems - Put over 1k in it within first couple months.
Drove it July-October and picked up something new.
http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll208/Kornelias/alero.jpg
Picked up a 2001 V6 Mustang 5spd with 82k.
Trying to do some slight mods. Hoping to eventually push at least 250HP - I just like having enough power to rip the average ricer out of the hole which I can do now most of the time. I'd just like to at least have the basics :)
Either way, I do love this car. Finally have a car I can be proud to own again.

If your hoping to ever get close to 250whp out of the 3.8 V6 your best bet is running some sort of F/I. It is possible do do ti N/A but it would be a much longer and more costly build-up. StangVortech on here has a Vortech S/C on his V6 Mustang hopefully he can give you some advice. I am not trying to bash on your build plan its just that the V6 makes like 190hp stock (but if you take into consideration drivetrain loss and etc) then your looking at 150hp or so.

How much would you want for the 3.73s and the exhaust?
Main thing holding me back from getting anything fun like that is the retail price of those due to fixing my Laser.

Mustang is SOLD
$4800
Excellent bluebook was $4700 and it was far from it.
Paint chips / spiderwebbing bumper.
Needed new front tires - bad exhaust leak
Cruise didn't work - some other minor issues as well.
Funny thing is the guy who bought it knew all of its faults yet didn't lessen the offer.
I was expecting to get around 4200 out of it.
I had 4950 in the window and 1st offer was 4800 so I just went ahead and said sure. He got approved for the loan and bought it.
Woot.
I'm excited - going to Illinois tomorrow to pick up my new car.
Pictures will be up tomorrow night :)
Dang! You can drive down an pick mine up and take it to the guy in chicago for me.
Do you still need help doing the trans on the Dizzum?

I'd kill for some help on the laser - tranny is just something I can't do.
After I buy my next car I need to save up to have it put in.
I'm actually in Burlington.
Was just in Muscatine today delivering my Mustang haha.
Will be going to Chicago(or at least a suburb of Chicago) tomorrow.
Need to try to get to sleep to be up at 7 to leave but I'm just to anxious haha.
Hmm I have to go to romeoville that is just north of Joliet.
I have never done a trans on a 1.8 But I can see if I can find some time to head your way for some help.
Did you sell your mustang to someone local here in town?
What is his/her name? (you can send that in a PM if you want)

And I'm not sure about the Mustang's buyer - I think he was actually from Quad Cities - I forgot exact name atm.
And yeah I'd love help on the laser but it may not be till around Septemberish.
Me and my friend cruise up to Cordova/Quad Cities all the time - sometime I'll have to stop and check out the new beast you got.

Well - I picked up the car - drove/shifted/ran fine.
I was about 1/4 the way home on I-80 when I went to pass a truck and let off cruise control and pushed the gas - went up to 60 and then just rev'd.
Couldn't get it into 3rd or 4th. Whenever it'd get to a shift point it'd just start revving.
Called the guy who sold it to me. He was baffled as well - because it honestly had been shifting hard and beautifully - pulled about a high 5 second 0-60. But he thinks the clutchpack for 3rd & 4th went out so he's fixing it for me free of charge. He's a pretty cool guy and widely respected on ThirdGen.org - been a member for 10 years and all and was really cool about the sale.
Ended up paying $2700 for it.
I'm still happy with my purchase though.
Picking it up Sunday or Tuesday hopefully.
Here's a quick clip of it as the previous owner parked it behind the gas station for his tow truck:

Yeah I'm still relatively happy to have pretty much near my dream third gen. T-Tops 350 Black - only 57k on the motor - 120k on the body.
Tranny had been rebuilt about 15k ago so this came as a bit of a surprise.
Despite the problems it has - it's was truly amazing to be cruising in it for the hour I had it.
Counting the minutes until I pick it up.
I drove my mustang tonight. well my gramps let me drive it until I pay for it saturday.
I can not wait!!!!!
I cant belive how fast the 4800 shift light comes on. I buried the speedo so fast I think this thing will handle my Talon.
Oh he handed me the goodie folder today. Put it this way he has more money in the motor than I am paying for the car. The only thing I dont like about it is the stupid phone dial wheels and who ever painted it decided to tape off the windows and painted the trim white.
Oh well. I got a thumbs up from a muscatine cop and if you know muscatine cops I thought for sure he was going to bust my balls on the exhaust.

Nothing major - but enough that it hauls some ass.
The 350 in it is from a 92 Formula which from my understanding were rated at 250hp stock
I believed it is bored .30 over
K&N Filter on the TB
Hypertech Chipped - also he gave me a bunch of other chips for it - one for pretty much purely drag racing which makes it run rough as hell but when you get on it its nuts, and the original 305 chip, and the stock 350 chip
A/C has been removed.
Flowmasters
Global West Subframes
9-bolt posi replaced 10 bolt
Disc Breaks replaced drums
The worst thing about the car is the driverside floor pan which will need replacing eventually. I don't know much about body work but I'll try to tackle it this winter.

I think one of the vendors is from toronto so and they are just a dsm junkyard its not dsmgraveyard they are in mich but they should have some.

I'm still having a hard time adjusting to the fact I have a respectable overall car.
No more v6 jokes and stuff you know? :P
Me and my friends used to always be cruising in my mustang and see something like a 305 Third gen or a Mustang GT with a decent exhaust and say "Damn that thing sounds nice." Now being able to think "Heh, mine sounds better" is pretty cool haha.
It seems like I've always drawn the short straw when it comes to cars - a 1.8L laser, a freaking Grand Am & Alero and then a v6 mustang. Not so much this time around xD

new tranny is perfect - 5k miles with a shift kit. Shifts perfectly and smoothly.
Although it sat for 2 years unused so I'm taking it easy on it for a bit to break it in.
Finally brought it home tonight - I love it :)
Went up to Chicago - woke up at 3:30am and couldn't sleep due to excitement. Got there at about 12 - car was done at 1:30 and ready to go. Got home about 6:45 - drove around. Now 12am and I feel like dieing! I start my new job tomorrow so I'm excited - has been a great week!
Going to wake up in the morning and go get the oil changed - normally I'd do it myself but for the first one I'd like to have Valvoline do their full checkup on it as they check pretty much everything/top off fluids. I always have had them do my oil change for the first time whenever I get a new car then I do them from there on out.
Also am going to take it to wash it :)

Besides those quick lube places cant legally tell you that you need tie rod ends or anything along the lines of that. They are in the business to change your oil if they dont f that up.

My Laser is finnnnnnnnally fixed and I'm loving driving it. It's so damn slow but it's so much fun to be driving it again.
Anyway it's smoking sometimes when I rev it'll puff out a cloud of smoke. Sometimes when starting from a stop it'll puff out a small cloud of smoke as well. It never smoked at all before. And when idling/driving it never smokes and if I keep reving it when it's smoking it quits.
I'm assuming it's just from sitting for over a year?
I just changed the oil and all and it's running great with none of the terrible lifter tick it used to have.
Just wondering if I shouldn't worry about the smoking part, it has already gotten a lot better since yesterday which was the day it was finally fixed.

09-26-2009, 07:24 PM
I think you would have been OK with modding the TSi until you said bumping up the boost. I am not saying that a DSM can't be reliable because I've seen a few stock ones that ran perfect, it seems that when you modify them things go wrong.
Not saying that your not planning basic bolt-ons but be prepared for something to fail on you.
Clinical
09-26-2009, 11:15 PM
Yeah - I just definitely don't intend to push any limits on it.
I may be switching jobs and until I'd build up enough money and kinda learn my way around the car - I just want to keep it a good overall daily driver. I figure 3psi more boost - and the other bolt on's such as intake/front mount/exhaust - and of course some of the free mods - won't endanger me to much.
Maybe down the road especially if I could afford to sell my laser and get a more reliable DD (right now laser is still smoking bad and window is messed up, tranny may be getting bad) - I may start going a bit heavier on it.
I'd love to eventually have one of the 13 or maybe even 12 second DSM's :P
+ I figure if I can learn my way around a DSM and keep it maintained - I bet I'll be able to maintain about just anything after that haha.
Dude I got my worn out 90 tsi into the 13s with just a MBC and c16 lol

NewSpeedSteed
09-27-2009, 02:21 PM
I thought stock dsms (GSX and TSi) were capable of decent 14 second 1/4 mile passes. So I agree with PIMking as terms of mods needed to hit the 13s. Even though the awd helps launching the car the good driver mod is still needed. Not saying your not a good driver or anything but just recommending you research your options and what direction you want to go with the car.

Haven't bought the car - however if this deal for my car goes through monday - I will be driving down Tuesday to buy the talon.
dsmtalk sucks.
DSMtuners.com is better for your DSM needs.
Now a stock DSM AWD should be anywere between 14.3-9999999
My 90 was tired and a bad clutch and a bad 3rd gear syncro.
Go exhaust first get yourself a 3" down pipe and a test pipe and a nice 3" exhaust or 2 1/2" cat back after the cats test pipe.
The 14b is a decent turbo but finding a nice (non EBAY) 16g is an easy upgrade and cheap to do.
as for intakes a 1g intake manifold is perfectly fine and good for over 500 hp.
If I were you I would go
exhaust
turbo
get a Forced performance race manifold Best you can get (200 bucks) dont get a gay ass tubular maifold
something to tune aka DSMlink (best) and around 600 bucks
then get some injectors
cams I had comp cams
Boost gauge would be the first thing I would get.
then a WIDEBAND not a narrow band crap you get at autozone.
once you get that go
2g maf or even a 3g maf ( write ups on DSMtuners)
Clutch (i had fidanza 3.2 clutch awesome!)
suspension
MBC
Walbro 255lph fuel pump
If you get the 255 get a adjustable fuel pressure regulator
Fuelab or aeromotive are the best and you can get em around 200 bucks.
and start rocking it out!
DSMlink aka ECMlink will have everything you need to tune the car. Change the timing maps and on 1g's the maps are crazy aggresive. change the fuel curves and you got anti lag launch control and no lift to shift
after that look into a cxracing FMIC. They are an ebay brand and a very good one. so good that punishment racing has bought them and sold them as their own.
things that you will not need are
fuel rail
Intake manifold unless you start building a complete monster
euro lights
Blow off valve the stock one is great and an upgrade to 2g guys
tubular exhaust manifold they are junk and dont make anymore power.
Coil on plug is a waste of time unless you want to clean up the engine bay.
solid crank pullies are a good way to trash your engine
but stay away from ebay stuff for DSM's most of that stuff is junk but a couple of things are okay and relitivly good products like CXracing Radiators, CXracing FMIC kits, and exhaust stuff.
everything else I would stay away from
Couple of vendors that I used and wouldn't use otherwise are Modern automotive performance aka MAP they are in minnasota and ship CRAZY fast. also extremePSI is another that is very good and helpful.
I ordered a adjustable fuel pressure regulator from them but they sent me the wrong fitting for the fuel rail and I called hung up and told him and they sent me the 1g one for free and free overnight too!
those are the only two I would use and they price match.
Good luck. Remember DSM's look best with a nice set of wheels and stock looking. you will get flamed like a mofo if you put a gay ass body kit on em and anything over 18" wheels.
remeber before you do any of this do your mantience. Timing belt water pump, plugs (ngk bpre6 are the best for our cars)
plug wires
and flush all coolant and replace it
go to a mitzu dealer and get a timing belt they are the best.
have fun and you will turn into a mechanic sooner than you know it!

Well I have an offer on my car I'm kinda sitting on - $3500
Thing is - I know I could sell it for quite a bit more in the spring + I could have little things fixed on it.
Now - in truth - I wouldn't pay more than 2500 for my car as it sits - but thats because that's what in realistic value it probably is worth - but also considering I only buy cars out of big cities mainly because those are where the deals are.
Anyway - I already know someone who would like to give me 4k for it in when they get their income tax as well - so I'm thinking about just garaging it for the winter and selling it in the spring.
My main worry is over my laser - so many problems are popping up - I'm really worried about it making through the winter.
I could either take the 3500 now - and buy the 60k awd talon and still garage it for the winter unless my laser would crap on me - or I could sell my firebird AND my laser in the spring - and get a decent WRX. At the moment my job situation even if I got 4k or more out of my firebird wouldn't allow me to buy a WRX - however I should almost be able to afford one straight up in the spring although I'd still finance it to get some more credit.
Soo - decisions decisions haha.

I can tell you the exact mods you "need" for a bone stock dsm to make it fast and equally reliable as stock. Would cost you next to nothing to do these mods, but thats after the $1k or so in maintenance is done. I have a 93 parts car, if you find you need random parts let me know, I sell them cheaaaap. You need a window ,$20, but why buy just the window when the whole door is $50...(get what im sayin)

on second thought Colton, i think i might take the throttlebody, as long as you're willing to throw in the wiring pigtail with it...
There is a reason why the DSM has low miles...

There is a reason why the DSM has low miles...
Story I was given:
Owned by the guy's mom - got to a point she couldn't really get in and out of it very well.
She got a Van but didn't like the trade in cost they were going to give her back in 2000 - so kept it as a second car and was driven about 2-3k a year since 2000 - has been garaged.
Title is still in his mom's name - guy I talked to said he was driving it while his car was in the shop and some guy stopped him and tried to talk to him about it but he didn't know much about it - found out about DSM's and such and realized that it would probably be worth more than the 1,800 blue book says it is - So he mentioned it to his mom and she gave the okay that she'll sell it if they can get enough out of it.
So yeah - that's basically what I got out of a phone convo / email.
Seems legitimate - Carfax was ran on it and it has no splotches at all.
I don't know - thought of getting into a WRX is awfully tempting - but at the same time I have a major softspot for DSM's - breaking stuff or not xD
My 91 had low miles because it was built on a friday and them union bastards were too busy making junk that someone down the road would have to fix all that shit.
Okay but seriously mine was low miles because it was nothing but problems for the people that owned it before me and gave me some issues but I basically fixed all that and then sold it like an idiot.

Well now the firebird is gone, sold to someone in Cedar Rapids.
Now I'm carless, I'm actually a bit pissed that I sold it - because now the talon is down. I don't know whether it was having tranny issues or not to be honest. However a grinding sound was coming from the timing belt area so I immediately pulled it into the garage and shut it off. Normally after sitting the car's timing belt will have a decent amount of play in it, it won't be extremely tight unless its turned on and the tensioner tightens.
Now it stays tight.
I need to take off the timing cover, i can't see if this is a motor mount issue or not.
Overall I'm just fucking pissed at the car now, it definitely isnt the worst issue(unless the tranny is indeed in need of help) but really it's just one of the final straws.
I've tried to be so patient with all the problems but honestly, the fact that a lot of these things haven't even been "normal mechanical" issues is what has really been wearing me down. I'll be honest, the damn thing has worn me out.
I mean, shit like hitting a tiny pothole and all my fuseboxe's wiring that hangs lower than the rest of the car gets split apart, and just for example how my fusebox is down in the front bumper just in front of my passenger tire (with no splashguard) and if it gets wet, the key sometimes won't start the car at all or the keyless entry will be weird..
Ever since I got the car its seemed like I lose a lot of oil in boost, i always saw some go down the front of the motor and kept cleaning it, after taking the timing belt cover off I see what has to be quarts upon quarts of oil caked on the side of the motor. I'm assuming it's the cam seals.
Hell you wouldn't know any of this stuff if you looked at the car, I keep it extremely clean, the engine bay shines and looks amazing - but theres just so much little shit. I keep intending to fix one thing then another breaks.
This stuff is driving me insane, I'd rather be blowing up a turbo or something. I don't even drive it hard primarily except for the track and when tuning it. I've raced 3-4 times on the street with it.
Anyways, now I have no way to get to school or work.
I'm looking into a few options, none of which I like but I don't have much choice now.

I used to stay up nights fixing things on DSM's. You feel overwhelmed now think where the car came from, and how much further from done it would be. I've spent years and years on DSM's, if you sold one car than you have some cash in case something is wrong. Take a few of the covers off check timing, check for rubbing etc. Tranny should be fine it was rebuilt and has good fluid in it. If your really convinced it is trans drain the fluid, if it comes out mostly metallic, that was your synchros or bearings. I'd change the trans fluid anyway, it has royal purple, I prefer redline mtl, mt90 etc.

Yeah, I'm going to see if the current issues will be a cheap fix.
Selling the firebird payed off the talon + i had to put a good chunk of money from my own bank account with it - pretty broke now, just didn't want to be in debt anymore.

being broke now wont be that bad seeing how your not in debt any more. When you have no bills your money starts to accumulate fast :)

Well I definitely have GOT to get a new motor mount, took mine off and its completely finished now.
Took what bolts i could off of the timing cover. Removed my crankshaft pulley & alternator belt, and now I apparently don't have a single 10mm wrench to remove the god damn bolts on the water pump pulley. I remember I lost a couple wrenches I left in my engine bay once when I drove off and I guess my 10mm was one of them.
I'm way angrier than I should be right now. But I've just been in a worse mood than usual with shitty job situation, shitty school situation - trying to go to class from 7:30->3:25 then going to work from 4-10 or 4-12 is really messing me up. Now not having a car anymore to rely on makes it worse, also doesn't help I have nearly no time to work on the car except today since the college has an in-service.
Maybe I should of just stuck to f-bodies, the DSM/boost world is fun as hell - if you can afford the time/money...

Haha. I owned 2 TSI's back in the day. I got smart and since have owned 5 Trans Ams and will never own a DSM again. Like you said. Fun as hell to drive, but they always make you have that worried feeling in the back of your mind, whereas with an older Trans Am, there's not much to go wrong. Fuel pump, pickup coil or control module, MAF, or ECM. That's about it. All easy and cheap fixes....that is if you bought one that is in good shape to begin with and doesn't have rust.

Yeah..
Like I said, my firebird I drove 18,000 miles in 5 months since it sat in winter storage for about 4, and I beat the crap out of that car all the time and I never had a single issue!
The talon I've been scared to beat on too much and I've driven it really easy and its still been driving me nuts. Funny how I did beat the piss out of it at the track over and over and over, the last 3 runs all within 5 minutes of each other - no time to cool down, and it did great then did the 2 hour drive home without a problem.

Very true should of stuck with fbodys for how much you bought the dsm for and for how much you spent to make it quicker and for how much more your going to spend to keep it running you could of had a nice ls1 powered fbody and had no issues and it still would of been fun ass hell with ac and ps in it

Yeah, I probably wont give up on it though.
I really can't see anyone wanting to buy it, there isnt much in the way of DSMers out here.
And I really don't want to sell it. In one point it'd really be a smart decision if I got rid of it with all the problems it's throwing at me, but I know I'd probably just end up getting another DSM. I do want to be rid of it on one hand, but I know how much I'd regret it if I did..
Oh boy DSM's!
Well on the plus side I did find a new motor mount, but my idler pully is definitely fucked five ways from sunday.

Hahaha I feel you there I got a dsm as well that's getting all redone and sumtimes I want to get rid of it cus how I would have sum kind of issue with it when its up and going again but when it comes down to it I wouldn't sale it at all I have to much time and money in it that I will never see again lol
But you diff need to fix all your dsm issues before you go to the track again to keep it from bresaking and you mite as well get a new timing belt and idealer pullies and maybe a tensioner to be on the safe side
